New braces

#1 Post by sacktheqb65 »

I'm looking for some input. First my story... about 3 years ago I heard about this product called 6 month smiles and then worked up the nerve to ask my dentist about it (he is a provider) and within a few months I was in my way to straight teeth. Well 6 months later and my bottom teeth looked great, the top hadn't moved at all but that wasn't my main concern and hey I was getting married in just a couple month so I was ready to be finished...

Well since then, I seem to have started snoring, clenching or grinding my teeth on one side and I'm very unhappy with my bite up front. Teeth look good they just don't function as they should.

I was just looking through some orrhodobtists websites recently and a chat window popped up and long story short they convinced me to come in for a consulration next week. Something that i didnt exoect though, they said to try to have extra time, so that I could get started that day if I wanted to go forward with treatment...

I had a few questions...
1. Are they assuming no bands, or would they put those on later? I actually kind of want the bands because i had so much trouble with poking with the 6 month smiles that didnt have them in the back but they couldn't do those the same day since I wouldn't have had spacers, right???
2. Type.. I KNOW I want clear braces on my top teeth. I had convinced myself that I would probably have to get metal on bottom just to save a little money, but his website says it's the same price for either, but I had kind of gotten myself happy with the idea of maybe adding some color to the bottom teeth since no one would see them anyway... I guess I'm wondering if it would be bad for me to actually request mixed brackets like that??? Also don't know if it matters that the clear braces are Damon's and the traditional are just regular metal...

If it's gonna move this fast I want to know my options!

Anyway, thanks for your input!

Hi. I have Damon Clear on my top teeth and metal on the bottom - I was told that having clear on the bottom is risky as the ceramic brackets can be quite abrasive on the top teeth. Plus they are bulkier than the metal and as no one can see them I didn't mind asking for metal, especially as the smaller the brackets the more comfortable they likely are!

After my consultation they made moulds first, took photographs, an xray etc and then I booked a separate appointment a couple of weeks later to put the braces on.

Good luck :)

I don't have any bands around any of my back molars. I have all ceramic except the back brackets are metal. As long as they get the wire fitted properly and trimmed flush with the bracket you shouldn't have anything poking you. Bands won't prevent that anyway, the end of the wire still has to fit somewhere. The band is just another method to attach the bracket to the tooth. But if you don't have any crowns or fillings on those back teeth you can just get the brackets bonded directly to the teeth.
Braces for 18 months/4 days.

Today was the day... braces consultation happened and braces are on... I am not as excited as I was before getting started but I know this will be good news... I'm also probably going to have elastics for basically my whole treatment time which bums me out a bit... 16-20 months of treatment time. Not a lot but I was thinking less in my mind I guess.

Anyway, thanks for the input guys.
