Underbite (double jaw) Surgery

#1 Post by Dirac7 »

Hello. I'm scheduled to get teeth extracted this week and braces put on later this month to prepare for what will likely be double jaw surgery around 15 months from now.

I'm worried about the cost as I have yet to see an oral surgeon but will see one soon. I'm in Vancouver, Canada and I'm afraid that if the surgery is significantly more expensive than what my orthodontist thinks the oral surgeons will charge than I could potentially have a problem with finances. If this were to occur what would happen to me with all the ortho work done if I can't follow through with the surgery?

Something else that's bothering me that I didn't ask in my consult with my ortho is how long I need to wear a retainer after I'm done with surgery and have my braces off several months after that? I think I heard him mention that it'll be for a year but I've read that it could be for a lifetime.

I'm in Vancouver as well and will require jaw surgery! I got my appointment to get Orthodontic records in January. From what my Orthodontist told me is that before treatment starts I'll be referred to an oral surgeon for all matters around the surgery. So I hope by then I'll have a better idea on the full cost of things and consult other surgeons as well.

How much did your Ortho say the jaw surgery would cost not including the braces?

As for the retainers. As far as I know, I thought the recommendation was to continuously use retainers for a period of time and then decrease the frequency afterwards for the rest of your life. Something like retainers for as long as you had braces on and then 3-5 days a week overnight afterwards for the rest of your life to minimize repositioning of the teeth.

Do you need to have teeth extracted before you get braces as well?

As far as I can tell jaw surgery has a large range since some surgeons charge more of a premium and it doesn't mean they're necessarily better. Some would cost around $10,000, especially if they do a lot of cosmetic work from what I see. The surgeon I'll be seeing will probably cost me $4,000 - $5,000 for the surgery. Possibly more but hopefully not too much more.

Hey nice to meet you guys! I'm in Vancouver as well. Just had my double jaw surgery 3 weeks ago. Had an underbite, crossbite, TMJ, and sleep apnea. I had upper jaw placed forward 7mm, 3mm impaction, and a genioplasty. My surgeon costed a bit more then 5k but I used him because I agreed with his aesthetic POV.

Awesome! More Vancouverites. If you don't mind me asking. Which surgeon did you go for? I'll be looking to setup consultations to a few next month.
