how long do people generally wear elastics?

#1 Post by sr20det »

Hi everyone.

Ive been looking around this site for a while now and its really been helpful to learn about my treatment (my ortho tells me basically nothing). Anyway, I am pretty sure I will be getting elastics on my next adjustment and was wondering if people could shed some light on the subject. I am mostly interested in how many months people usually wear them for. Obviously it depends on the case, but I have a decent overbite (overjet? Im not sure but my top teen are further forward than my lowers) and was wondering if others with the same thing could let me know how long they had to wear them for. If people could just tell me their case and their time i would really appreciate it.

Thanks

It sounds to me like you have an overject or buck teeth as its more commonly known. I also have one and at last measurement it was 9mm which is rather large. If you get elastics its very likely you will be wearing them 24/7 and for a few months untill the teeth are pulled back and the overject is subsiquently reduced.

I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but it really does vary. Elastics are an integral part of some people's treatment, and so may be used the whole time, or for some people they may not be used at all.

As for me, I had them for about 2 months, I guess I got off lucky in that respect.

Ditto on what has been said.

It really just depends...I've had them for 11 and a half months so far, in several different configurations along the way.

I've had my elastics for 5 weeks. I only wear them for 12/14 hours a day (put them in after I've eaten in the evening then take them off before breakfast). I have another adjustment today so will find out if I am carrying on with them.
