Headgear (also called Orthodontic Headgear) is a removable appliance which creates a force to move the teeth and guide the growth of the face and jaws. It generally consists of a wire facebow that attaches to the teeth, and a strap that fits around the neck or head. Orthodontists mainly use Headgear on children, but sometimes they need to use it on adults. There are several different types of Headgear which accomplish different goals.
- Cervical-Pull and High-Pull Headgear – These correct an overjet by holding back the growth of the upper jaw
- Reverse-Pull Facemask – This corrects an underbite by moving the upper jaw forward
Headgear is usually worn for 12 to 16 hours per day for 6 to 24 months, depending on the situation.
