Thank you for your comments on my wire and tooth movements. It has been so good to see my front tooth move back into my jaw. I'm longing for it to move that last little bit now, but patience has to be a big part of this journey...

braced again:
Yea, I was so pleased when my ex-student said 'your braces look really cool'.

It helped me know that I am proud of my braces because they show I'm doing something for my teeth.

Hello again LongInThe Tooth - great pictures and look at all that movement already! I know what you mean about being patient. I had a whole 6 weeks where I was sure nothing moved at all. But I needn't have worried - then I went up to a thicker wire and things started to move fast , as well as hurt all over again.

I laughed at your comment "the Brit say nothing approach" a few posts back. Sometimes I adopted that approach too while I was there. It was quite strange to see people notice and then try not to notice and say nothing. Other times I broke the ice by mentioning my braces first. Usually, people were a bit embarrassed and still said nothing about them. Here in California, people are so different. "Oh, you got braces. That's great!" and then they ask how it's going or tell you their story. I feel MUCH more comfortable with them over here than in the UK. I think I'll save my next visit to the UK until they're off in about 12 months. I admire you! You sound very confident about what you're doing.

Enjoy New York. I've never been but I'm sure you'll see other adults in braces there too. Let us know how you get on.

Take care

Thanks for your replies, Athy and Jill.

Athy: I'm so glad you had a good time in the UK. Wonder where you went? I'm going on to Vermont after NYC - we're hiring a car in the city and then driving out. NYC is so popular with Brits at the moment, and it will be nice to be maybe a little more adventurous as well as seeing the city, and hopefully to get a little sense of space that there so isn't here...
Jill: Thanks for your comments on my pics and tooth movement - comments are SO encouraging.
Yea, it must be great that people are open about the braces - sometimes it would be nice to come out with my story but people just don't ask (guess it is no wonder considering nobody speaks on the tube, and I am comfortable with the familiar anonymity of that). I think it might be different in different parts of the UK and I wonder where you went? I live in the south-east of England but a neighbour who comes from Newcastle did ask me straight out about the braces, but come to think of it I've been to other places (eg Liverpool) since getting braces and still got no comments and only guarded looks...
I suppose we all get used to the braces in whatever situation we live in and so adjust to that, and I wasn't confident at all at first (although always sure I was doing the right thing 'cause I wanted my teeth back where they 'should' be) BUT I still can't wait to see if I get any comments in NYC (and Vermont)....

So glad you liked London and Paris, Athy.
I've just had the greatest time in the US. Walked up this tall mountain called The Camel's Hump in Vermont. Everyone was v. friendly, talking about how far to the top etc., and no stares at braces. When got down these people were jumping up and down and going 'Yea! The Brits made it!' It was great...
There was so much to look at and do in NYC.... Macy's was so vast I couldn't begin to find anything, but I bought a couple of things in Bloomingdales...
Now it's back to the jet lag and usual stuff like cleaning teeth!

I would like to go to Canada, too, but I did SEE it from the top of another hill/mountain (the view from the CH was blocked by cloud) and it looked really beautiful - all high blue-looking mountains. When I sort out some teeth pics I'll try to post one of the view..
The weather your way sounds a pain. Had really hot weather in NYC with 1 day of rain, then A LOT of rain and thunder in Vermont. Monday before getting plane there were hailstones in NYC - lucky Brits are used to bad weather!
Great to hear from you. :D X, LITT

second adjustment

#23 Post by LongInTheT »

bit late writing on second adjustment 'cause of hols, but here goes...

Not very exciting. My ortho was on holiday and a friend of hers took her place (seemed nice, too). Followed my ortho's instructions on new wire - it was 1 she normally puts on after 1st adj (my bottom right back teeth were too wobbly for that at time). Said something like 'we are going slowly' - I knew they wld as I've lost bone due to gum disease but still not totally uplifting: luckily went on hol few days later so no time to brood on speed/no speed (and am still v. pleased teeth moved so fast when braces 1st on). Hve noticed a massive gap opened up at left top past my canine tooth - must have some purpose... Will post some pics when got them together.
One confusing thing, and I wonder if anyone has any views: my hygienist said I sld be careful of coffee, tea and wine as thy cld stain my teeth under the braces. The ortho said no problem as they clean teeth up anyway after taking braces off. She also said some kinds of teeth more liable to staining than others and some kinds of tea stain more. Anyone any ideas on this? Saw hygienist on June 2nd, but already a little staining tho I've given up red wine, cut down on tea/coffee and almost always drink water after (as suggested by hygienist). It wld be just my luck to have esp staining teeth along with teeth prone to gum disease (but mustn't moan!!)

Not moaning at all, have just had a brilliant holiday in the US. No braces probs or stares. The odd second glance I think mainly due to the Brit accent and understanding me...

Comments about braces

#25 Post by mrsdilios »

I've come to realize that a lot of the comments or discomfort other people have about my braces is due to the person's own insecurity. Seriously, next person who says something derogatory...check out their teeth, weight, etc. People who don't take care of themselves don't like to see other people taking care of themselves. We serve as a constant reminder that they are not doing anything to help themselves. Sort of a derogatory explanation on my part - but I stand by it. I know whenever I'm irritated by something I try to look at myself and 9 times out of 10 I find the cause of irritation in myself.

I say good for you!!!

Personal insecurity is only one reason for saying derogatory things. An individual being immature is another reason.

A football player (good looking, built) can say some terrible things about others simply because of his environment to be the alpha by degrading others.

A politician can say some racist remarks towards others simply based on an upbringing in societal differences.

So if someone gives you negative remarks, its just a part of human nature, and should be disregarded or ignored like everything else we as humans suck at (ie. compassion, understanding) :)

Athy:
Hi, and thank you for your comments on staining. I guess I was confused cause my hygienist said the teeth under the braces cld stain permanently, but this seemed strange if they clean thm up after... I clean my teeth really carefully, but last few days have also started rubbing the interdental brush quite firmly around the brackets on my top arch. Seems a good idea...
I notice you had an adjustment at the end of July. Hope it went well..

Bracesweden:

Really nice to hear from you! Hope the braces are going well! Let's keep beating those gum problems!
PS I've written something more on your story.

mrsdilios:
Thank you for your brilliant comments. Yes, you are right that we bracefaces do serve as a reminder to those that aren't looking after themselves and that they don't like it! Last time I got a nasty comment I was taken aback cause there hadn't been 1 for a while, but the next day said 'oh, at least my lower lip is bigger than usual, and this isn't for ever'. Most people are great, either don't notice/say, or positive comments eg 'yr front tooth looks so much better'.

real2:
Thank you for yr comments. They were really useful. Yes, I think you are right that immaturity is another reason for making nasty comments, or simply not being able to just think and not speak! People can be immature at any age (maybe sadly!) I also honestly think that getting braces can make u a stronger person, and that can take some people by surprise, too... Yea, going on to the end of yr post, I think ignoring is a gd way, and getting braces teaches us to do that..

jt2lang:
Hi, and thanks for the comments on clean teeth. Yea, I think I will keep doing what I'm told, visit the hygienist and try not to worry!!

The new wire didn't feel like anything ie no pain, but I've had spots in my mouth in new places, so something must be happening....
As for lack of pain with new wire - I'm sometimes a bit funny with pain ie don't get it when others do, and eg I never get headaches. Still, I think this lack of pain mgt be cause it was still a 'beginner' wire (least from other post on the site I understand wires will get a lot bigger..).

The US was really great. Saw so much in NYC - all the great buildings eg Woolworth and Chrysler and lots of museums (I'm crazy on art) and then a week in Vermont... It was really beautiful there, and got to talk to a lot of people (such a nice change from being tongue-tied in countries in Europe..), which was v interesting, and went on some hikes through the woods to the tops of mountains/hills (all the views at the top only, v different from the UK). So all good. Also picked up a lot of new words (eg stop lights for traffic lights), which are disappearing now...

Braces put on April 8th

Hi, Jt2lang, and really glad you haven't had any pain throughout, even with your canine.
My teeth did hurt after the first adjustment, but not enough to call pain and certainly not enough to take a painkiller. So I guess I am just lucky, so far. It was VERY reassuring to read that no pain if a kind of normal, anyway!

Hi after a long time!

#29 Post by bracesweden »

Hi LITT,

Thanks a ton for visiting my sob-story and leaving some encouraging comments. I feel much better in the lingual band-thing - it somehow no longer rubs the tongue so much - maybe my tongue got used to it?? But on the other hand, one wire in the lower jaw is now making my life miserable - I guess my teeth have moved (though I dont see it), and the wire has moved into the jaw - snagging the jaw-joint / corner whenever I open my mouth. I guess I am in a moaning mood (sorry!!)

I am following your progress with great interest as we have quite similar case histories :D I am going to the perio on monday, then I will come to know if I have been keeping my teeth in order - brushing well etc etc.

You seem to be doing a good job of it so far....keep up the good work. Post some pics if you can!

Hang in there!!! :-1
