Dental Cleaninings with Braces

#1 Post by jbjalways »

I have my first adjustment scheduled for 10/5 and my first dental cleaning with braces on 10/16, do you think my teeth will be too painful for for the cleaning then?

Also, wire in or out? How long can it be out for? Should I reschedule the cleaning for before the first adjustment?

The Dentist office said they could do it either way but prefer doing it without the wire because they don't want to bend it????

Consider yourself lucky!!! I have my first adjustment on 9/5, and my first cleaning since my braces went on on 9/6! :( I'm kind of scared about that! I too was concerned as to whether or not I'd need to have my archwire removed for the cleaning so I called the ortho's office and asked. They said that there was no reason to take it off because the hygenists are trained to clean around the brackets and archwires. My next question was how much was the cleaning going to hurt and if I should change the appointment day. I was told that if I take some ibuprofin before both my adjustment and my cleaning I should be fine. I always feel a lot better after I call my ortho's office....they are good at comforting me! So I hope the cleaning isn't too painful.....I'll let everyone know how it went on the 7th.

jbjalways I don't think you'll have anything to worry about, but good luck all the same! I definitely recommend the ibuprofin....really helped me after I got the molar bands and then my brackets and archwires. Let us all know how it goes for you!

Take care,
Rachel

I don't like dental cleanings without braces so I'm sure I will "love" it with them. lol

I don't think they can clean with spacers in, I better check. For that matter I don't think they will change the archwire till the spacers come out.

I spoke with my hygienist first to see what her preference was and she prefers wires in. Takes a little longer, but she assured me that she could still do a great job. Check with yours and Good luck.

My ortho doesn't remove the wires for cleanings so I always get mine done with archwires, etc. So far everything has gone well during the cleanings. It was good you thought about the timing for adjustments and cleanings. I won't get my teeth cleaned the same week I get work done since I am usually on a soft food diet for several days - I tend to get a lot of work done at each adjustment so my teeth get sore.

I'll be going in for a cleaning on 1 September and have been advised by both my ortho and dentist to leave the wires in.

Dental Cleaning

I just went in for my first cleaning and I had my wires in. The girl who was working on my teeth was having a field day working around all the metal wire ties and power chains behind and in front of my teeth. The time went by very quickly and she did a wonderful job with my teeth. So just relax. Take 1 advil and 1 tylenol about 30 before you go for your cleaning. I did it just to take the edge of my nerves, because I was just as nervous about my first cleaning as you are now..

Good luck and best wishes. :squareteeth:

It was a case of wire in place. I was in and out in 15 minutes.

When they cleaned my teeth in braces, they always did it with a water-blasting pick called the Cavitron. It didn't hurt.

You may want to consider taking a couple of Ibuprofen or Tylenol before your cleaning, just in case.

I have my next dentist appointment in November- and as it is in a different town to where my ortho is, they will have to leave the wires on. I let them know when I made the appointment, and they were fine with it.
Banded 22 June 2006.
Debanded 24 July 2007.
Loving it!
