Keep popping off

#1 Post by braceface984 »

I have Damon brackets and my ortho had to put on regular bands because my brackets kept popping off. So now I have 'mostly' Damon brackets and they are still breaking off. I was eating a cut-up apple with no skin and one popped off. I cant sit through another lecture about being careful, and they charge me $20 each time i get one fixed. My bottom teeth are much worse than my top were, and I am dredding going through the treatment again. I want it to go fast and, in a way, that is why the Damon's are good. My friends said that their's dont pop off near as much as mine do, and they eat much worse than I do. Their entire diet consists of the 'no' list . Could it be something that my orthodontist is doing, or are my teeth just stubborn? What should I do? Please keep in mind that I didnt want braces in the first place, and didnt know that I was getting them until we pulled into the ortho. office parking lot.

my ortho had to put on bands too. I dont think that this is normal for Damon's. And it is the same tooth over and over again, i think that there may be something wrong with the brackets...they always just bond the same one on again until they get annoyed and finally just band them. By the time i am done with my treatment, I will have all bands and conventional brackets. LOL. Good luck with your problem.

braceface984.

You're not alone. I had 4 ceramic brackets come off during the first 3 weeks after I got braces on. The bad thing is that I was out of state at the time, so I couldn't do anything except ..waiting. On week 4, I returned home, went see my ortho and I was blamed on my eating! I didn't bite or chew with my front teeth, and besides it hurt so badly just after the braces were on that I didn't want to eat. Therefore, I was like mad of being falsely blamed. My ortho told me that when a bracket comes off, if the cement is still on the tooth, it's patient's fault; if the cement is on the bracket, it's the tech's fault due to bad job in bonding. In my case, the cement was still on my teeth, so it's my fault, as she said! Honestly, I don't believe in that because I know myself. However, I got them redone at no charge, and later I decided to change from ceramic to Damon on my upper because the Damon on my lower teeth is doing OK. Since then, I haven't got any more brackets came off... yet. Now, I have a full metal mouth... In your case I agree with KK that you need a serious talk with your ortho, especially you have to pay for your brackets redone.

Wish you the best.

Sorry to hear what's happening to you, braceface984. The Damon 3 braces, which are half-clear, half-metal, tend to break a lot, according to my ortho and many others. I even read on a website for orthodontists that one of them qualified these as being cursed with the worst of both systems : not nearly as invisible as the "really clear, ceramic-like", brackets, and with a high tendency to break.
My ortho doesn't use them anymore, he prefers the Damons 3MX (all metal), which the firm made after they got many orthos complaining the 3M broke very often. I also read that one of the two main lecturers on the Damon system himself advises to use the all metal braces.
By all means, I don't think it is fair to make you pay for each broken/fallen bracket, especially if you are being careful with what you eat.
Good luck to you.
