Weight loss and braces
Did anyone lose weight when they got their braces

Hi pinkblondie, I had 12 metal brackets (6 upper, 6 lower) yesterday. I forgot how difficult it is to eat when your teeth are all slightly sore! Plus cleaning them is a pain, so I didn't eat very much yesterday. I woke up in the middle of the night because I was hungry, but I was too tired to deal with figuring out what to eat and worrying about cleaning my teeth so I didn't bother. This morning my stomach of course was concave. I am a thin person already and I just know I am going to have trouble keeping weight on while I have these braces. It's just more convenient to eat less!

I ate before braces just fast food, burgers, pizza, mexican food.
Now I can't eat them anymore. Just bananas, porridge, ice cream, smoothies and soups. I could expect some weight loss, because I am not eating fattening burgers anymore....
My weight is ok, but there some kilos, which came after I got to USA

Hi pink77blondie,
I lost 4 lbs the first week after I had braces on. I ate less due to the discomfort while eating In the following weeks, the discomfort reduced then my eating was back to normal, "recovered" more than completely! I thought I was eating to recover but in fact I got 4lbs back and gained 5 lbs more! It took me some time to lose the "extra".
Welcome to brace journey!

I was sooo hoping to lose weight because of braces but braces themselves did not do anything to prevent eating I have had no pain at all from my braces. I read all this hype that they would hurt going on and the it would be sore or that you could not eat this or that but none of that is true For me anyway. No pain and no diet restrictions. Now in June I am getting my jaw broken so then I know I most certainly I will not be able to eat! Finally

I'll *weigh in* (OK, go ahead and groan) on this issue by saying that braces in and of themselves didn't slow me down at all. I love good food!
However, I'm pretty sure I lost a bit of weight (maybe 5 pounds) after my jaw surgery and have kept it off thanks to the wretched, brutal elastics I now have to wear. Because of the whole oral hygiene routine I have to go through before putting on fresh elastics, I'm just less apt to snack.
I don't actually own a scale (evil, self-esteem destroying things, IMHO), so I can't confirm my weight loss 100%, but my clothes are definitely looser than they used to be.

Braced March 2005 (lower); November 2005 (upper); all ceramic. Goal = correcting overbite.
Lower jaw surgery was successfully performed December 18, 2006.
