Everything went very smoothly today, although the appointment took a little longer than anticipated. I have full lowers and everything up to the [5]'s done on my uppers. There was a slight change of treatment plan, which is why the appointment ended up being quite a bit longer than scheduled. We spent some time talking, and have decided to do another RPE along with the braces - Yay! Fun! So I don't have my uppers banded, the bands were fitted, impressions were taken and I will have the RPE fitted after I return from my visit to the UK next month.

I definitely listened to all the advice from those who have gone through this before me - plenty of water to be hydrated, but paid a visit to the restroom before getting started. Lots of lip-balm, and salt water rinses have also helped. The lip spreaders weren't so bad, although my mouth and jaw did get a little tired of being open for such a long time! I also had this strange thing to bite down on, which caused a couple of gags, but nothing too bad - my husband, bless him, has quite a hilarious photo of me in sunglasses, lipspreaders and trying to keep warm under my blanket (my polar bear of an ortho keeps his rooms fit for the artic! )

The etchant and glue stuff was a little bitter tasting, but nothing too bad. My husband stayed and watched the lower bands and a couple of brackets go on, took some rather amusing photographs of me, and then departed for the nearby Best Buy to amuse himself whilst I got finished up. I have a .12 wire on the bottom and a .14 on the top, nothing too heavy at this stage. No elastics yet, I'm assuming not for a couple months now that we are moving ahead with a second RPE.

Without further ado - here is the photo :

So far it has taken me around twenty minutes to clean my teeth and floss, hopefully I will eventually improve on that time! I was shown how to clean and floss whilst I was still at the office, but its definitely not that easy for the first time. The brushing wasn't too bad, and I also have some inter-proxy brushs for getting between the archwires and cleaning the brackets nicely. Flossing was definitely the hardest part...

I usually use those little bits of floss that are on a stick, much much easier than trying to work with a piece of string! However, that is no longer an option (except for the back teeth on my uppers :D) I bought some of this Oral B Super Floss, the stuff thats stiff, fuzzy and then floss.
Its pretty tricky stuff though, but I've found that coming down through the archwire somewhat easier than going up. I hope this flossing lark becomes easier with time!

So far, no pain - and my husband took me to the Olive Garden for dinner tonight. I managed to bite into the breadsticks just fine, and managed a meal of Pasta with no problems. I'm definitely eating slower, but with cutting everything up real small, it wasn't too much of a hassle. I did however give up the after dinner mint, chocolate just isn't appealing at the moment. I had my dentakit, and was able to clean up easily after the meal. I think thats quite an accomplishment, eating in a restaurant on my first day with braces! :D

Congrats on a great first day. You did way better than I did! I think I'll take a blanket in to my next appt. to my polar bear. I already take special pillows for behind my neck and low back.
Keep us posted, and smile big!

My teeth have definitely been a lot more uncomfortable today, this morning I managed a bowl of soggy cereal and it was mashed potato for lunch. Its my uppers more than anything, have no clue what they're upset about - a .14 wire that goes across just eight teeth and they're all pitching a sensitivity fit! The wire does have quite a few bends in it, it'll be interesting to see how quickly that straightens out. I also have one tooth that is a lot less erupted than its neighbours, and there is a nice kink in the wire at that tooth - that tooth is particularly sensitive right now, I'm wondering whether movement is being contemplated...I sure hope so!

I bet you'll be seeing movement before you know it! The braces look nice--I like the pink on the bottom!

Congratulations Sam, Your teeth look very nice for your first pic, nice colors . Hope your sensitive teeth feel better soon. Sounds like your teeth are lining up for a big change to happen. I made a total mess of my first meal at McDonalds.Things will get better and with your good attitude ,you'll do just fine.

Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement guys, my teeth are certainly feeling tender and sore at the moment. Its a weird sensation, not really pain - unless I'm trying to eat :P But definitely uncomfortable! I'm sure it will surpass over the next couple of days, but my one lateral is really agitated over that bend in the archwire!

Definitely! I am all for the water and lots of fluids whilst going through orthodontic treatment. I noticed how scratchy and irritating the molar bands of my RPE could become when I wasn't drinking enough water - and its not comfortable! I've already flossed tonight, and the gum around that lateral doesn't seem quite so bad, plenty of salt water rinses, flossing and some mouthwash with hydrogen peroxide seem to be helping lots!

I've come to the end of my first week, and all has gone well - I think! Eating has become a little easier, its just somewhat of a hassle to have to cut things up real tiny as I still can't bite into anything whatsoever! I don't think there has been a great deal of movement, but I swear there is a gap opening up between my upper centrals and then then between one central and lateral. I have my first adjustment on Wednesday 14th February, and we shall see what the ortho has to say about it.

Not sure if I'll get elastics or not, I might have to wait until the bands go on and I have the expander. I should definitely get a date for having my RPE banded though - I'm kinda ready to have that back in now, I know that my treatment will be kind of static until I get that back in and really get to work on alleviating my crossbite.

Here is a new photo from today, I don't think there have been any changes, but I thought I would post one anyways :P

First Adjustment!

#26 Post by samantha_lou »

I had my first adjustment today, rather soon considering that I only got my braces a week and a half ago. Had two new wires, bottoms went from a .12 NiTi to .16 NiTi and tops went from a .14 NiTi to a .16 Niti also. The new wires don't feel too bad at the moment, I'm sure I'll feel a difference in the morning. I also got my first powerchain (a clear one so its quite hard to see!) Owwwweee! It was quite sore when it was put on, a lot of pulling and tugging - definitely not comfortable. I had developed a gap between my two upper centrals, and the chain has certainly taken care of that, right from the second it was put on! Other than that, some light lilac ligs on the bottoms, and we were finished.

I'll update with photos later!

Well its been a whilst, but I thought I would check in! Everything is going well, no pain or soreness - I don't think I've needed to use wax more than once. I have my next adjustment at the end of the month, and I think at that appointment I will be getting spacers for the bands and expander, then going back five days later for everything to be cemented in. I've not really noticed much movement, but I will update with some photos a little later this weekend. I've been to England for a trip back home, and I don't think anyone even noticed that I had braces! It went well, and I had a great time!

Hope everyone else is doing well!

Here are some photos for a quick update - these were just taken this evening!

I don't really think too much has happened - although it does look like one of the laterals has moved downwards and lined up with the centrals. I was getting a gap between the centrals and laterals before the powerchain was put on across from [2] to [2], but now I think I may be getting a gap between the laterals and canines.

Am looking forward to the expander, I feel kind of stagnant at the moment where I took my vacation and now my ortho is on vacation! I'm definitely ready to progress a little now!

So I thought I would share some photos with you guys, and this might of interest to anyone undergoing non-SARPE expansion. I think I've done pretty well, I had my RPE for six months, had it removed and then got my braces on and I am now going to get a second expander - but these photos are from my first day with the RPE and the second is from today.

I'm quite pleased with the progress so far - take a look

So I had my third adjustment today, and all went well. Dr is quite pleased with how we are progressing, obviously my crossbite is still an issue and we're not quite ready for elastics yet. I did come home with two spacers on each side for the [6]'s, so tonight I do have two rather unhappy upper [6]'s. A new powerchain from [3] to [3], so the front 6 teeth on the uppers are now chained up together. I also had a wire change, now sporting .18 NiTi's upper and lower. Apparently the wire will not be hooking up to the bands that will be installed to hold the RPE immediately, eventually he said, but not for a whilst - so I had the wire changed today along with all my ligs.

I don't know if anyone else notices this, but getting my bottom ligs changed, not a problem...but the tops - OWWWW! I think its because the ceramic brackets are so much bigger than the metal ones I have on the lowers, therefore the ligs have to be stretched and pulled more to go on.
I'm in quite a lot of pain and discomfort tonight, due to (a)new powerchain, (b) new wires and (c) spacers annoying the [6]'s and the [6]'s in turn sharing the love by pushing on everyone else.

After SNL, I think it'll be some Tylenol PM and then a good nights sleep in bed and hopefully I'll be feeling better! Being that I'm having a "discomfort" night, its great to look on those photos and remember why I'm doing this and how far I've come already. I get my RPE on Wednesday, and I'm looking forward to moving onto the next phase on my treatment!
