Does anyone happen to know if the Damon brackets cost more than the regular metal ones, or are the Damons just as a result of new technology? My brace day is this coming Monday, and I wasn't sure which "metal braces" I was going to be getting. Some things just become obsolete (or old to the point where they don't even make them anymore), and I wasn't sure if the regular metal brackets were a thing of the past.

Metal brackets are still in. Mine are Sondhi Mini Twin Brackets created by Dr Sondhi. They are not self ligating.
They are really tiny visually, however in your mouth they feel Huge. These ones, according to my ortho, are not as precise as self ligating brackets in the inital movement stages. The end result will be the same but with these the end result may take more time which is what the ortho is after in my case. My teeth have short roots and really need to be moved very slowly.

Good question. I was going through all the different types last night and wondering what I was going to be getting myself. These aren't the kind of things you think to ask the ortho about before hand. At least I didn't anyway! I saw one site where they make the brackets that look like stars, flowers, etc....Not something I'd want but I'm sure there's a young girl out there who'd love what they had to offer.

My ortho's gonna use regular metal brackets. His brother got into the Damon system, and has had two problems: 1. the doors break and there are more problems in that sense. 2. they don't deliver the promised results.
My attitude on it has became we don't ask a mechanic what kind of tools they use. We don't ask our dentists what brand and type of handpiece they use to do our fillings. The results speak for themselves - and I've seen the results of this guy's work. They're great. I'm excited for it. My best friend was treated by him and her teeth look amazing.
With that said, basically, no, normal brackets aren't a thing of the past. It depends on the ortho. They'll use the tools they feel most comfortable with - judge them by the results of their work not the brackets they use

My office offers traditional metal brackets and newer high tech damon / tiny brackets (dunno what they are called exactly) which cost exactly the same. I took the traditional anyway because they pop off less often and work more reliable and faster, at least thats what my doc said and I didn't care anyway of the type of brackets. I just knew I didn't want ceramics, even thu they cost the same as well.
I don't think it makes a huge difference, take the smaller if you prefer less metal, otherwise I don't think they work much better. Most important is, as you said anyway, how good the ortho can work with his tools and brackets. if he is superior with traditional brackets and don't have a clue about damon, then its clear the first choice gives a better result.
If you care that much you can just ask you doc about details of the brackets he will use, as I did ask her as well. If you don't, they mostly wont explain or let you choose much, because they think you don't care.
