The Birth of Ugly Jenni... the long version

#1 Post by LadyTr0uble »

Two months into my treatment, and from reading up on other's stories, i have decided to get off my lazy behind and start documenting my progress. Thanks to Denise, Meryaten and KK's inspirational records.

Let's rewind back a decade (I was 16)... my parents took me to an ortho for an evaluation, and the results were that I had a crowding problem and I will need an extraction, namely an incisor. My overprotective dad wasn't too keen on the idea of removing teeth for fear that the gap will never close correctly. So he decides to leave the decision to my teenage self who responded with a strong "heck no!" because I would be walking around with a gap in my front teeth and for fear of being called "metal mouth."

Fast forward to three years ago, when I'd started working... I was now covered by insurance that would cover $3,000 of orthodontia, and I was aware of the fact that the cowding hasn't gone away, and it bothered me. I'd spoken to my dentist who specializes in orthodontics about braces during my routine cleanings but never followed through with the full evaluation.

Because I am missing a lateral incisor on the top, my teeth are fairly straight, and my bottom teeth don't show much when I smile, most people don't even notice that my teeth are crooked. Well, except for those who are obsessed with teeth, like myself.

Image

On the top, one of my central incisors is crooked and bucked out more than it used to be, and one one lateral incisor grew in a little further back than the rest of my teeth, but again, not noticeable to most people.

Image

I am not actually biting down here, so you can see my crowded bottom teeth. I guess they aren't THAT bad...

Fast forward again to 6 months ago... during a routine cleaning (for the first time in a year and a half... I know that was BAD) my dentist informs me that I have the beginnings of gum disease. Not all over, but in the front, on the bottom where the crowding was. That was a wake-up call! Gum disease is something that we hear about all our lives in Listerine commercials but one doesn't really know anyone with it. Now the braces is no longer a cosmetic thing, but something that will correct a problem. This is time, I made a follow-up appointment with him and kept it. So during my next visit, he did a scaling procedure and also did the molding. That stuff was yucky! A two weeks later, I had another appointment for the x-ray and to discuss strategy.

The strategy was the same as the one all those years ago: extract a central incisor from the bottom to even me out and make room. First, I asked about Invisalign, the answer was: you are not a candidate. Then I asked about lingual braces, the answer was: you are going to hate them, and I am not going to put them on you. So we agreed upon ceramic brackets with metal bands. He was going to do the extraction after he put the braces in because in his experience, he's had patients back out even after the extraction for one reason or another. Then I will have to get rubberbands to fix my open bite.

One week later, on Novemeber 9, 2006, he put spacers in. I HATE spacers, enough said.

On November 16, 2006 I was braced. He told me to bring in a movie to watch while he put in the braces, so I got to watch "Wedding Planner" while he went to work with his assistant. I can't give any details other than some of it felt funny and the cement tasted yucky; I was the glasses thingy for me to watch my movie and earphones in. When they were done installing the brackets, he asked me what color ligs I wanted... clear of course, as I wan't my braces to be as invisible as possible. After everything was done, he gave me a mirror and I looked then gave it back quickly fo fear of appearing too vain. I didn't get a good look at the rollercoaster till I got home. First thing I thought was: OMG!!!! what have I gotten myself into?!?!?!?! The pressure was uncomfortable but bearable, so no painkillers for me. Eating was a problem though, but I was prepared: I'd stocked my fridge with yourt shakes and smoothies, and bought myself a container of congee (Chinese thing: it's soupy rice, kind of like runny porridge). I had the congee for dinner. But the pressure bothered me so much that I callled my guy up the next day to see if he would do the extraction before my vacation; I had a flight to Hawaii on 11/20, that Monday. He agreed to squeeze me in Saturday morning... great guy!

As much as I wanted the extraction done, I was SO FREAKING SCARED! I made him shoot me an extra two more times before I left him anywhere near me with any of his tools. There was a lot of gentle tugging. then he realized that my teeth were so crowded that my tooth wasn't budging because it was cemented to the incisor next to it! So he had to buff away the cement. After some yanking, the tooth came out. The wire came back on after they were sure that I had stopped bleeding... which was like 15 minutes later. Before I left, I made him write me a prescription for Tylenol 3, just in case it hurt; I was not getting on an 11 hour flight without being armed with a strong painkiller. I am proud to say that I still have the whole bottle of Tylenol 3 intact; the pressure from the darn braces hurt more than the extraction!

So i went to Hawaii and had a good time between all the trips to the bathroom to brush my teeth. I had the usual braces-food: mashed potatoes, yogurt, mushy bananas... then slowly graduated to sushi. [Insert all your newbie problems here, i.e. poke-y wires, poke-y brackets, sore gums, long cleaning routines, speech problems, cracked lips, etc.] Somehow during the middle of my trip, I noticed that the the lingual hook on the lower left brace was pokey; then I remembered that it must've been that fried chicken that had bent it. The crunchy skin that I couldn't turn down was the only thing that was hard enough to bend the wire. Nothing some more wax didn't solve. God knows that I've swallowed enough wax to make several candles!

Here is a pic from November 25, 2006. I was waiting for my friend to finish showering so we could go the luau, so I had this bright idea to take pictures of my gap so I can see the difference later.
Image
I am not actually biting down. That was just my screwy way of trying to get a good shot at the gap.

After awhile, I noticed that the wire was really poking me on the top left, so I called my guy and asked about it, and he told me to go into after work so he can take a look. He ended up changing the bottom wire and putting on a power chain to start closing the gap along with clipping my poke-y wire. My first adjustment! He wanted me to keep the appointment two weeks later anyway, just to track my progress.

December 18, 2006: I got a new wire on the top, with these little loops, one on each of my top canines. He put on another bracket on my bottom left bicuspid so he could put a spring there to help move my teeth over, and the powerchain at the gap again. This time, instead of a lig to hold the wire in place on that turned incisor, he used a twisted wire and a loop in my wire there... I wonder why?

December 16, 2006: Two whole months since I've been braced! I finally got off my lazy behind and took some progress pictures.

Image
Image

My two incisors are leaning on each other and meeting at the top, leaving a triangular gap by my gums. There is a gap between my bottom right canine and bicuspid from the spring. Definately progress.

December 18, 2007: I went in for my 3rd adjustment. New bottom wire. The loop, twisted wire, spring, and powerchain are all gone. But he put in this spring-like thing to rotate my bottom right canine and make room for the turned incisor which would "probably just pop into place once the canine is out of the way." I took a picture of it, as my descriptions are almost never adequate. that and I've gone picture happy with my camera!
Image

Two months and two days into my journey, my front teeth LOOK straighter to me; it can very well be my own wishful thinking. My bottom teeth definitely are slowly moving into place slowly but surely. I have been obsessed with teeth for the last two months. I look at my own teeth at any given chance, so it's like watching a plant grow, so my teeth never seem to be moving, but I've got pictures to prove it!! Let's see how long I can keep this up!

to be continued...

oh, I wrote a book! I guess I got a little carried away, huh?

Hawaii was definitely a good way to break in braces. Heck, there wasn’t much of a choice of what to eat on the plane; it was eat what they gave you or starve, and since I am such a fattie, I’d take eating, even if it hurts, any day! That was definitely good for me, as I credit the fact that I eat almost anything to that. When a hungry girl is starving, she’ll eat anything! No candy be damned; I had M&Ms on the plane ride there. The hard candy shell did cut the roof of my mouth after too many of them, and I did run to brush my teeth.

Oh! The salt water from the ocean was heaven sent for the sores from the “newâ€

I made month three last Thursday, and to celebrate my anniversary, I’d paid my ortho a visit for an adjustment. I got this spring-looking thing on my bottom left lateral incisor (think it’s a rotating spring??), and rubber bands going from my top canines to my bottom molar bands.

The turned incisor has moved a teeny bit (I can tell because I no longer have the jam my proxy brush between the bracket on that tooth and the side of the canine next to it). He had also filed a little off of the other two bottom incisors to make room for that turned one.

Now that I can see the turned tooth rotating, I can almost imagine my teeth being straight on the bottom… it’s weird, almost like someone else’s teeth!

I haven’t been here for a while, as I am studying for the GMAT.

I am SO glad that I found you guys here to help me through the journey!

thanks guys!

That bookworm is SO cute, Denise. I've sent it to my cellphone for my wallpaper!

The elastics aren't so bad. They HURT and were rubbing against my cheek the first two days, and that was the most painful adjustment to date, but it passed after two days, so i was able to eat all the yummy foods for the chinese New Year celebration (I would've been mad if I couldn't eat).

Food does get stuck, and taking them off to brush after I eat is a pin, but it's manageable (it's my nails that get in the way when I try to put them back on). I was told to change them once a day. And I have noticed that my elastics get looser as the day goes on. I was wondering if it would be good to change them twice a day, to take advantage of the "stronger" elastic? I always feel a little funny putting in my "dirty" elastics back in my mouth (been rinsing my mouth with listerine before I take them out in an effort to clean them a little.

Karen, you're response time is amazing!!

I will ask my ortho when I drag my butt over to him to clip that pokey wire on the lower left.

Yes, those salt rinses do help a lot! Every single time something starts poking or rubbing, I go back to the salt rinses or the wax!

Did you find yourself playing with your elastics? I'm trying not to, but my tongue has a mind of it's own!

Hello...
I should be on more frequently now with DSL (no more 56k modem for me). I JUST got it set up... like NOW.. I am so silly... thought to share with my buddies here.
I just made 4 months, and went in for an adjustment (I think it's my 5th) last Thursday. It's trippy how time flies.
The offical answer from my ortho to my last question (Should I change my rubberbands after each meal?): yes, if I want to, but I HAVE to change it once a day.
Goodies for me!
Speaking of rubberbands, I got different size rubberbands for my right side since he moved the "hook" for the rubberband further back (to give me more of a U-shape). But I am so confused: why are they 3/8" when the distance from the top hook to the bottom hook is now shorter? I was given 5/16" the last time, and I am still using those on the left side (where the hooks are exactly where they were). One woud logically assume that I would be given smaller ones, right? I guess I should call the guy and ask (just in case he had a brain fart or something).
I will post pix of the progress as soon as I get some pix taken... too tired from rewiring the whole apt!

KK: You are a foutain of information, as usual.. THANKS! :D The rubberbands don't bother me much, except when they pop off.
and yes, DSL does make the online experience much more enjoyable

Denise:  Happy Braceversary! you keeps us posted on your progress too

In the meantime, here are pix from 2/22/07:

Here are the pix...

As you can see, I've got rotating screws (I think that's what my ortho called them.. better pay closer attention next time  ) on a top central incisor and another one on one of my bottom incisors. He had also put a loop by the turned incisor to help turn it

They are supposed to get my two leaning incisors to sit straight. They don't really bother me, except they do catch floss once in a while.

I can't wait for my next adjustment-- I am supposed to get a new bracket on the turned incisor, now that we have room to place it on the center of the tooth.

It was so nice to be able to upload the pix as I was writing my replies, instead of leaving my computer to do other things, like the laundry. And by the time I get back from whatever I was doing, I either don't have time, or don't feel like finishing up my post!

Have a great weekend!!!

Hi, LadyTr0uble, nice to meet you! Loved how you fessed up to looking at your teeth at every opportunity. I find I'm doing the same.

I've seen such fantastic progress in a really short time in your photos and everyone else's that I keep expecting to see a difference everytime I look in the mirror. Instead, it's more like your analogy ... watching plants grow! But, the pictures really show it. Keep the pictures coming so we can celebrate your progress too!

Thanks jt2lang and Brace Face.

lynnm-I still study my teeth every chance I get, but they always look the same to me; I do look at my teeth a lot. But the pictures help a lot. I can compare pix and see the changes; it's a great feeling.

I screwed up today! Seven weeks of elastics and I have no once forgotten about those things. Well, I managed to forget them this morning. I'd taken them off to brush my teeth and somehow forgot all about them till midmorning when I was flexing my jaw and wondered why my jaw feels so "light." Of course, i didn't have my elastics on me--they are still sitting on my bathroom sink! I just got home from my GMAT prep course and put them in. I hope a whole day without them didn't do much harm...
I also had to suppress the urge to double up to make-up for the lost time. I shouldn't be playing around with my treatment.

My next adjustment is next Thursday; can't wait! I should be getting more elastics (this time I will leave some at work and some at the bf's place, just in case!). My tipped lateral incisor is now sitting up, thanks to that rotating screw. Now we have to straighten out my central incisor and scoot it over to make some more room for the rotated incisor on the other side. Now that the rotated incisor has turned enough, my ortho said that he'll have to take the bracket off on that one off and center it... I can't wait for that to happen. I am hoping that having a bracket on the center of the tooth will hurry the process along.

I know it's not always a good thing for teeth to move too quickly, but I can't help feeling impatient. I am still upset at myself to have forgotten all about my elastics! I've been trying my best to be a good ortho patient... and I go and forget my elastics! They don't even bother me anymore, except when they pop when I am trying to get some bits of food out with my tongue.. yucky, I know

Adjustment Six today! Well, a client meeting came up so I had called to reschedule and they had an opening today.

He only changed the bottom wire--into a heat activated one (what are they called?? I'd asked and he told me but I forgot). He took the bracket off the rotated incisor (that hurt! boy, I can imagine what it's going to feel like when the guy has to take off all the brackets. Thinking about that makes me want to keep the darn things in forever.. or until they fall off one by one) and put it back on the center of the tooth. And because he was able to center the bracket, he was able to use the heat activated wire; no more loops in the wire for me! Thank goodness, because that last loop I had in the wire cut my lip up!!

Oh, and more elastics. I'd remember to ask about the different sized elastics and why the longer one is on the left side, and I was told that it was because of the distance between the hooks. Just like you said, KK!

Here are the pix:
PS-I even remembered to post an old pix for reference.

Is it my imagination or are my top central incisors not as buck? It might be wishful thinking. But that rotated incisor is definately turning. And my bottom left canine (one on the right in the pictures) rotated a little bit so now it is "in place." And the gap where the extracted incisor was is getting narrower... it's hard to see with the power chain in the way. this is so exciting!

Wow, it's been five months... well, close enough. Time does fly, even with braces. I had wondered how I was going to make it through the whole treatment and now I am about a quarter of the way there. I was told that the progress is good and he is pleased... yays!!

KK: he also gave me more elastics so now I can leave them at all the places I frequent! ... home, work, grandma's, the boyfriend's place... this way I will always have elastics :D
