bicuspid extraction
i am having my bicuspids (pre-molars) removed tomorrow because of a protrusive upper and lower jaw. its not that prominent but it has caused strain on my lip(according to ortho)..i was reading online about the various extractions and many articles said that they result in flat faces and retrusive lips..is this true? is this not good for u from an aesthetic view?
Thanks Meryaten.. im still kinda scared of it looking worse than before. the xrays looked protrusive but i also asked my regular dentist for his opinion and he said i needed to have extractions too.. i guess just reading all these articles online is freaking me out more than i should.. i already had wisdom teeth removed in december and now these 4..i feel like im losing all my teeth! i always wanted a wide nice smile..hope its still possible..Meryaten wrote:Bracegirl, the thing to remember here is that each case is different. Given your pre-treatment profile was protrusive, and your lips strained, I'd imagine that the chances are you'll not end up looking sunken.

Re: bicuspid extraction
I have a similar problem with the lip strain. My brother is an oral surgeon and told me that I would have to have those bicuspids extracted if I was going to correct my bite and fit all my crowded teeth along my tiny jaw. I went to the Ortho and he said the same thing. I know that when all is said and done, my smile will look better. I know my brother wouldn't let me go through ortho tx only to walk around with a sunken face and worse profile than before. Trust your doctor, there is a science behind all this madness.bracegirl wrote:i am having my bicuspids (pre-molars) removed tomorrow because of a protrusive upper and lower jaw. its not that prominent but it has caused strain on my lip(according to ortho)..i was reading online about the various extractions and many articles said that they result in flat faces and retrusive lips..is this true? is this not good for u from an aesthetic view?

thanks Meryaten, I've already had my extractions before b-day. Since my bi-cuspids came out, the ortho said I could keep my 3rds. My brother was itching to pull those suckers out of there but I convinced him to follow the Ortho's instructions. The exrtactions were cake, way easier than these darn braces. Also, I'd rather pull some teeth than get jaw surgery, I can only handle so much pain and the horror of having a liquid diet for longer than a couple weeks!!!!!! I love fried chicken too much!!!

The giant gaps aren't as giant as you think. The gums around it will start to fill in and the holes will be gone soon. People hardly noticed that I had the gaps unless I showed them or smiled really big. People are very self-involved, they're all worried about their own appearances rather than someone else's.
