First Consultation Questions

#1 Post by Chalky »

Well everyone, finally, after 6 months of waiting I will be meeting my ortho for my first consultation. Moulds, x-rays and check ups all done by my dentist so it should be right to the point.

What i am wondering is what questions i should ask?? I already have some to ask e.g time scale, what might be involved.

Does anyone else have any others questions that they think i should ask?? I have 3 of my 4 wisdom teeth but no problems. Should i ask about them? Everyones help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Chalky.

I'd ask about anything and everything that came to mind. So yes, I'd ask about the wisdom teeth. Also, what type or types of braces the ortho wants to use. Plus like you said time frame and details of the treatment along with any appliances you might be expected to use.

Good luck! I hope it goes well!

Ask anything that you are fuzzy about

Such as the bracket or wire system they use and how that will aid treatment. I was encouraged to hear about the advances from the days of old and that made me feel better about my decision. I wish I had a more concrete idea on time frame, appliances, necessary extractions (as well as timing of those extractions) and what the dentist recommends I buy to make this a good process (type of toothbrush, waterpik, etc.) I guess I'll have those questions answered later today when they put the braces on.

The only thing I cared about was if I had to have headgear (no, thank god...I think thats mainly for children whose jaws are still growing..phrew!) and if they'd be off by my wedding! The answers were no and yes, respectively, so I said...ok lets do it!

But then again I'm a spur of the moment takes chances type gal. I would definately reccomended that other people write down all the questions they have and ask all of them.

The wisdom teeth thing - one of my friends had to get her wisdoms out after she had her braces off, because if they decided to come in they would push her teeth all out of alignment again. So I'd definately ask about that one.

Good luck! The consultation is no biggie and its actually pretty exciting. Enjoy it!

Meryatan, no offense taken. When I mentioned brackets I meant self-ligating vs. with ligatures and type...like ceramic. Also, the wire system my doctor uses, Sure Smile, allows him to show me how each teeth will move. I've heard that the wires do the real job so I'm encouraged by this suresmile technology. I'm a newbie...please don't beat up on me if I don't phrase the terms correctly yet.

also I would ask about the possibility of extractions. If you are not wanting to remove teeth, then ask for alternative solutions. If you dont like what type of treatment plan that the ortho presents, don't hesitate to get a second or third opinon.

Remember that you utilmately have the final say of what should be done to your mouth, so dont be afraid to ask a ton of questions. And if you leave the office and still have more questions call them back. The ortho should have a treatment coordinator who can answer your questions.
