Well, I had my latest ortho visit on March 1st and it went well as usual. I walked out of there with some funky color arrangement that the assistant has been dieing to try out on me. I guess I was in one of my bold moods that day so she was able to get extremely creative with hot pink and red ligs. I’ve got two colors on the top 4 teeth and then she alternated colors from every other tooth with red and pink. Weird but cute.
Now as far as the MARA goes, everything is moving along great! I’m scheduled for 6 more months with it. I’ve had it in for 3 months and it’s seems like a life time already. One thing my ortho noticed was that the MARA was creating some spaces between my top molars on both sides so he fitted me with a power chain that only covers those last 3 molars on both sides. This is my 2nd month with the chains and I could not believe the pain after about 2 hours :soremouth: ! I had no idea I had power chains when I left the ortho since they sit so far back in my mouth and no one told me that’s what they were going to do. Needless to say I was back on my soup diet for the next 2 weeks. And just as soon as the pain starts to subside (I bet you can guess) I was scheduled for yet another visit to the chair and got slapped with the power chains once again. It wasn’t as bad the 2nd time however I have this strange feeling that I’ll be in full power chains before this thing is over.
A few visits ago, I was told that the MARA had been advanced to the fullest and that there was no room for anymore adjustments. At my last visit it seems as if my lower jaw has gotten use to the 2 mm adjustment made in the past and has made room for 1mm more. I go back on March 26th for that. I like when they make those advancements because it makes me feel like there’s progress being made.
Let me try to explain the advancements a little bit. If you look at page #1 near the bottom of this forum then you may be able to get a better idea of where and how they advance the appliance. So as I said in the past, there’s a crown on the lower molars with a stopper on them and the upper molars have crowns on them that have slots that these elbow things can slide in and out of. Okay so what the ortho does to advance the MARA is add small rings from ½ mm to 1mm each to the elbow which pushes the elbow out further/forward and it then rests against the stoppers on the bottom molars (the stoppers never move by the way) and because the elbows move forward and rest on the stoppers, it forces the lowers jaw to sit forward and that’s how the stretching and training of the jaw starts. It sounds more painful then it really is. I have room for 1mm so that’s what he’ll do on the 26th. So far I’ve had 3 advancements! I started with a 7mm over bite and I’m down to I guess 1mm.
This is such an adventure for me. I can’t begin to express how happy I am that I made this decision. I am however very anxious to bring this journey to an end. I have been craving a PayDay candy bar more this weekend then ever before which is absolutely not possible at this point but I’m wondering if it’s worth a try…..
I’ll keep you all posted.

Mara or Surgery Yikes!

#18 Post by LindaG »

Hi Indalee,

It sounds like you have what my Ortho recommends; Damons and Mara. I have a narrow arch and a deep overbite. Of course his first recommendation was surgery (yuck). Then he told me I might get most of the outcome I want with Damon braces and a Mara. I have a bit of a gummy smile and my top front teeth completely cover my bottom teeth though they do not jut out.

Did you Ortho explain that the Mara has not been proven to be effective on adults? I've read about that on the internet.

I'm just nervous about paying for the Mara and then have to end up doing surgery if it doesn't work. It seems you're having really good luck with it.

Any info you could pass along would be greatly appreciate.

Cheers,
Linda

Hi LindaG! I spoke with my ortho about the MARA not being effective in adults as I too read about that on the internet. He told me that it does work and explain how. He told me that in adults whose jaw bones are fully developed, the MARA acts as a training tool that repositions the jaw and holds it in place which in time, muscles will stretch and new bone growth will develop to adjust to the position. I don't think that when the treatment is complete we won't be able to move our lower jaw back and forth however I do think that our natural bite will be more forward to eliminate the over bite. I wasn't too sure about that but I have spoken to someone that had to wear one and I was pleased with her response not to mention her bite was great. There is a chance that the bite will change up to 1mm after the MARA is out but that's wear rubber bands come in and tighten everything up. If you find out anything new from your ortho, please, please share! I'll get more detail about the MARA from my ortho for the both of us and report back to you on.
I just had my adjustment yesterday (no pain) and they advanced my MARA another mm and gave me blue and purple ligs. Where it use to be virtually invisible when I speak or laugh, it mine as well be a front tooth now because it shows most of the time my mouth is open. I don't mind it showing....I'm only in it for 6 more months....lol

:-1 Hello All! I haven't written anything in awhile because nothing has changed. I'm still in the MARA until October some time. Things are progressing quite well with it. My ortho takes the elbows of the MARA out at every visit and checks my bite to make sure it’s settling right. I notice once it’s out that if I try to slide my lower jaw back into the over bite position, it’s very VERY uncomfortable and I can’t slide it back nearly as far as I use to. My ortho said that’s because there has been some bone growth due to wearing the MARA. It’s taking some time for my bite to completely settle but it’s worth waiting for. I was told that I may be asked to keep it in past October and I’m honestly ok with that. My next appointment is August 2nd and it will be the normal changing of the ligs, changing the MARA rubber bands and out the door appointment. My appointments have now been spaced out 7 weeks apart now which leads me to believe I’m getting closer to the finish line! I still find myself stopping by to get my ligs changed. They tend to get really messy after 5 weeks. I know this sounds crazy but I’m looking forward to getting my power chain put on. I guess because I haven’t noticed any real movement in some time and I have some gaps that I never use to have that I desperately want closed. I’m just very excited to see the finished results. I’m due to be released in December or January of next year so that’s really making me anxious. If anyone is reading this who is struggling with deciding to get braces all I’ll say is I wish I did it sooner. I was terrified to get them but honestly once I got them, it wasn’t so bad….wasn’t bad at all and my husband likes them too.
 Oh yeah, I got married 07-07-07 like 35,000 other people in the state of Indiana. That was a very busy day for many families. I didn’t get my braces off for the wedding. It wasn’t that big of a deal to me. I just got clear ligs and smiled big for the camera! You can’t really see the braces in pictures either. I wish I knew how to post pics on this site so you could see (or not see) the braces!

Since there’s not been much progress lately I will update you once I get my power chain OR if my ortho makes any changes. I hope everyone is doing well with their braces. Hang in there. This too shall pass!

Thanks KK! It was an unforgettable day.

The MARA is working wonders. So, I told you that I had an appointment at the ortho’s yesterday, right? Well everything went great. At first I thought it was going to be a bad thing that my regular ortho was out on vacation and a different ortho would have to check things out. However it turned out to be a great thing. Not only was he hilarious :biglaf: but it gave me the opportunity to get a second opinion on my progress. I never thought about getting a second opinion before but to get one unexpectedly was a great surprise. I had the usual changing of the ligs (got light pink) and he changed the rubber bands on the MARA. Before he put the elbows back in, he inspected my jaw movement and he said that I’ve made some remarkable progress. He checked my chart to see just how far I’d come and saw that I use to have a 7mm over bite and that really “wowedâ€

Okay! I hope I get this right. I have a few photos to share that will give you an idea as to where I am in my treatment. The first one shows a side view of my bite before the MARA was put in and I was just in braces. Take note that the braces alone did decrease my overbite and as you can see, I still had a ways to go:
Image

The second photo shows my bite after the mara was put in. By the way, this is also how my bite looks when the MARA is taken out:

This is a pic of how the MARA looks all crammed in my mouth  :

Now that I know what I'm doing...Thanks to KK...I'll be posting more recent pics soon. I took these with my camera phone so if you can't see them well just let me know. I can make them bigger!

Thanks jtslang! You can probably imagine how happy I am that that overbite is gone! This is a picture is my lower teeth that use to be in one straight line across the top. Now that my teeth are lined up correctly, my biting surface is jagged so I'm hoping to get them shaped up once the braces come off.

Wow! I'll have to make sure I put some pics up where you can't see up my nose...LOL Sorry.

:biglaf: Good one jt2lang! I'll definitely take your advice and ask my ortho about reshaping my teeth on my next visit. They actually look better in the pic then they do right now so I'm sure he won't have a problem with it.

Thank you KK! I'm glad I was able to finally post some pics...with your help of course :D . Pics are a great way to track your progress. You can really see the changes when you line them up in order from beginning to end. I'm going to see if my ortho will give me or make me a copy of my "before" photos. They tell the whole horrible truth  .

Indalee, you may mention to your orthodontist that you'd like to have them reshaped, but you may want to wait until you are nearly finished with your treatment. That way you will know exactly where your teeth will be so the reshaping can be most effective to give you an even more beautiful smile!

Thank you all for the encouraging words. Things are moving in the right direction. Now if I can just stop counting down the months until I'm free, I think I'll be alright.
