A few questions for those with Invisalign

Discussions about treatment with invisible braces that use clear aligners, such as Invisalign, OrthoClear, the Red White and Blue system, etc.

I went with them for the aesthetics mostly. Other advantages are that they are really easy to clean and you can brush and floss your teeth as normal. The price difference was for brackets about AU$4000-$5000, compared to $6500 for Invisalign. I had a lisp for about 2 weeks which has mostly gone away now (14 months into treatment). Despite being told they wouldn't irritate my mouth, I have had quite a few ulcers and a permanent ridge of irritation on my inner cheek between the occlusal surfaces. I started off with 13 buttons (got it wrong in my earlier post) but now have 15. The more buttons you have the harder it is to get off the trays, although it does get easier with time. I suspect the treatment would have been much quicker and I would have had better results with traditional braces (see my other post).

a few questions for those with Invisalign

I had braces as a kid. This was probably about 13 years ago. I didn’t wear the retainer enough and my teeth shifted. When I decided to have this fixed, I was willing to have ceramic braces, at least on the bottom where the main problem is, but I was concerned about them sticking to my teeth. When I had braces before, I had the full strap up- metal bands around every tooth because the bonding material wouldn’t hold the brackets on my teeth. Probably due to the decalcification of my enamel. Anyway, I figured Invisalign wouldn’t cause as much enamel damage, and I wouldn’t have to worry about them sticking.

I am paying $4300 total, 6 upper, 18 lower. I don’t think I would have went for the upper braces without Invisalign, so traditional braces might have been cheaper, but I don’t think by much. For me it will be worth it if it works.

I think I remembered treatment time would be about the same. Maybe a little slower with Invisalign. My consultation was a while back, but that’s what I remember.

I was told that they are best for crowding and spacing type cases, and have a more limited impact on underbites, overbites, or crossbites. If your bite is good, you’re probably a better candidate for invisalign, I would say.

Good luck, I hope all goes well for you in treatment!

What my ortho has told me is that invisalign is NOT good at: moving molars forward, or bringing them up, and also not good at derotating, depending on the specifics of the rotation. Hope that helps.

It's been over a week with the invisalign upper tray and 7 weeks with the lower brackets and archwire. The convenience of the fixed braces is there they are. eat, drink they are working. The aligners come out so you are now counting off time...and if you have a busy schedule you will miss brushing and getting them back in etc. Both have good and bad points, both have hassles. My preference would be the fixed braces, and that surprises me because I was so bothered at first that I couldn't get all invisalign.

Now that I have had my invisalign for almost a week, I can add things I wasn't able to before about comfort, etc.

At first, these suckers were tight! Hard to get on and off, but 2 days later, they were fairly easy. I do get frustrated that I can't have a coffee in the car, but today I caved, and simply took them out and wrapped them in a napkin while I drank. I rinsed with mouthwash and poured a bottle of water over the trays and put them back in until I could get home and brush.

Also on the first day, I felt that they were really noticeable. Now, I don't even really notice them when I look in the mirror to brush hair, apply makeup, etc. And no one has noticed I'm wearing them- I even had to point it out to my sister who is usually quite observant!

My mouth is only irritated by the inside ridge of the bottom tray- my teeth are quite crooked down there, and the back piece just kind of cuts across the two that are furthest back, leaving my tongue to explore the edge. That I'm sure will work itself out as I progress.

One final thought- I will be buying the whitening tubes from my ortho next visit. I save money not having to buy the trays because I just use the invisalign trays. Just another way I can improve my smile while I wait.

Overall, I personally am very happy that I went with Invisalign over traditional metal braces.

Hope this post helps others. :D

:) Well I am having to cut back on my coffee consumption, so I figure if my teeth are being whitened, it will help me avoid the caffeinated drinks as I wouldn't want to ruin my white smile! (Or waste my money!)

TMJ

#23 Post by Joanna88 »

I noticed that you said you had TMJ. I also have TMJ and have been wearing a mouthpiece for awhile to fix my bite. Now my backteeth do not touch, and I have to get braces to change this. My dentist told me that I would not be a candidate for Invisilign, but then I went to a qualified ortho in St. Louis and he told me I would. I was wondering if you knew why they said you wouldn't be? My first ortho was going to use traditional braces and then slowly grind down my mouthpiece untill I didn't need it any longer. But the new ortho said I would basically need to get rid of the mouthpiece first because it would prohibit my teeth from moving. Do you use one or know if this is true?
