I don't know anyone that has braces on as an adult. I returned to work with braces, and after many comments from others I just want to hide in my office. So many women have made negative comments to me about the braces... I didn't think some would be so rude...and me so sensitive to their comments! I don't see why they feel the need to make comments about my mouth anyway, how can anyone disapprove of someone that is wanting to improve their appearance and health of their teeth??!!! I can't hide in my office, any suggestions?
Flaunt them : )
I'm so sorry to hear that you encountered those comments Joelle. I think they're being idiots, and I would go around flaunting my braces! It's a great thing that you're doing!! Don't let their comments bother you. They're probably just a little jealous, and don't think they would have the guts to do it : ) Keep your head high and be proud, you have every right to be proud of yourself.
When I returned to work, everyone was so positive. They still ask, how are you making out with your braces. It's genuine concern and they were happy for me. I too was happy with myself. I say this just to show you that many at work are very kind and compassionate. I'm sorry that you encountered a few that weren't.

Hi Joele,
I can't believe people would be so rude....Honestly! I'm sorry those people are such jerks. Mary is probably right though that they are just jealous. If you don't mind me asking, what are they saying to you? Perhaps if we knoew what the comments were, we could help you with some responses?
Best wishes,
Libby

Thanks for the help...KK your'e right...I have been doing ok with the braces and wouldn' dicourage anyone from geting them. I told one woman at work that I don't even remember that the braces are on except for when she feels the need to remind me and question me about why now in my life.."you're not a teenager" etc...I do realize that I work with some idiots and guess I have to expect it from them, wish I didin't. I was telling my son that every parent should have to wear braces before their children so that they know what the experience is like, it's an eye opener!
That is horrible!!
Your colleagues are silly. They probably are just jealous. My colleagues sort of looked at me in bemusement - they didn't quite get it at first but thought it was really wonderful. I got a lot of "you go girl!!!" type of comments from family, friends, and co-workers. My boss told me he gets better cell phone reception around me now!!
I like the questions about how much does it cost, how long, etc etc. Makes me think that some of these folks are going to show up in an ortho office soon!!!!

Also, I am curious - you say you don't know any other adults with braces on - KK said the same thing. I have met or at least seen a dozen adults (and most not young adults either) with braces in the last month. I wonder what country or countries have the most adults with braces? Where are you from out of curiosity? Good luck!! And don't listen to the naysayers!!!

Wow, Joele, your coworkers sound like really bitter, unhappy people. I know that sounds harsh, but in my experience, people who are happy with themselves and their lives don't make rude comments like the ones you are describing.
It's jealousy and low self-esteem on their part. Not necessarily because you've got braces, but because you're making the decision to put yourself first and do something just for you. A lot of people don't think they are worth that sort of thing, and they never put their own needs first (which is really sad, who will think you're worth treating nicely if even YOU don't think you deserve such treatment?) A lot of times those sort of people try to make you feel bad for taking care of you. DON'T LET THEM!
My son has watched me go through the braces experience so far, knowing he'll be getting his in a year or two, and I think it's helped him! He knows it's not always going to be fun, but in the end he'll have a great, healthy smile. What's better than that?

That is so interesting about New Zealand and Australia. I think here in the States we are so obsessed with pictures of models and celebrities with their perfect gleaming smiles that it seems normal to whiten teeth or put veneers on them and/or put braces on our teeth. And it is so normal for pre teens and teens to have braces that I swear I rarely see a young adult that doesn't have perfect teeth. I started to feel like an odd ball with crooked teeth
At this point with orthodontists a dime a dozen why not get it done?!!!

I have wanted braces for 30 years....now is the time I am able to do it financially and feel right about it...I also have 2 children in braces and one more that may need braces in a few years. Well...I am happy to say that a coworker approached me today and told me she had braces and had them taken off when she was 55 years old, and she added that she has been so happy since, always smiling and it was the best decision she had made!! It was great to finally sit and talk to someone that had a similar experience! I was feeling quite alone and tired of the looks and questions, now I feel more at ease. Thanks for all of your help! I live in New York...not NYC, but rural NY....adult braces are rare here too.
Most people haven't said anything about my brace but I have had one or two very rude comments so I can sympathise. Best thing is just to ignore people and remember that you're doing it for yourself and really it's nobody's business but yours. If others have a problem with it then that says a lot about them.

Hi there Joele!
Me personally I would give the nasty witches a BIG HUGE brace-face SMILE!
But then again, I'm just evil....
Stick with those who will support you, and ignore the poo-heads.
Sounds like your attitude is getting back on track - yahoo!
"Don't let the turkeys get you down" - a timely saying to remember esp around Thanksgiving!!!
Cheers! -- MsTikl
