How about braces in late 50s?
Moderator: bbsadmin
Hi, Athena. I'm 58 and braces since August too. I love the way my teeth have begun to straighten out. The ortho says I will only have to be in them a year so I'll be ravishing before I reach 60!!!
I had red ligs put on for Christmas and my four grandkids got a big kick out of it. Looking forward to hearing about your progress.

I'm 46 and I thought that was a little old to be starting but how wrong I was. My ortho said that he has patients in their 70's. No age is too old as long as your teeth, gums and general health are good enough to cope with it.
My partner said it will be like dating a teenager because he typically associates braces with the younger generation.

A belated welcome to our over the 50 braces club. I think you and I could be a couple of the most senior members. When I first got my braces I thought I was the oldest person in the world with a tin grin but surprisingly when I found this site I realized they are quite a few of us and that indeed made me feel much better about my decision. Hopefully with our support you will feel the same.
A far as posting photos in the main forum directory there is a section which explains the process. For my photos I use photobucket and then copy the img code and paste it at the end of the text using the Img box at the top of the post a reply page.
Good luck and look forward to seeing your photos.

We recommend first of all that your photos don't show your full face. Please only show your mouth. We had a problem recently with braces fetishists lifting our members' photos and posting them on fetish sites.
If you don't have an account on photobucket or one of those photo sharing sites, the easiest way to post your photo is by using imageshack.us.
Not sure what other instructions you need.

I'm the owner/admin of this site. Had ceramic uppers, metal lowers ~3 years in my early 40's. Now in Hawley retainers at night!
Another 50 plus braced face.
I am going to change my photo-Guess you don't realize how many creepy people are out there waiting to prey on the naive?
At any rate, just wanted to join the "it's never too late" cheer.
By the way, Rhonda. Your smile's looking great. Lucky you, no metal soon.

Hello to the Goddess of Wisdom.
Hope all is better with your bottom brackets. I think my bottom teeth were more sore and tender than my top teeth at first, now my top teeth are the ones that give me the most grief. Do you have damon brackets?
I am a little dissapointed. The ortho is struggling with my midline and I am now back to a different elastic configuration. I had this before and can't say I care for it all that much. Hopefully this will not delay my release date set for March but he wouldn't make a firm commitment.
I guess I shouldn't complain I've waited all these years so an extra month or two is no big deal.
Be well and look forward to following your progress.
PS. From what is visible in your photo the Canadian air has been gentle on your aging process.

Thank you for sharing your story! I'm 49 and just got my braces on Jan 9th.
Such a small world, I'm going Saturday to Scotland and London. I'll be back in 2 weeks.
I have Damon brackets except for my front 6, which are Ice. I had Molar Build ups in the back and a Bite Turbo in the front -- until the turbo popped off about a week ago.
I went today to my Ortho and he is not going to replace the Bite Turbo that fell off... said my teeth on the bottom has moved enough that my upper teeth do not hit my brackets! YEAH! I can eat restaurant food on my trip!!!
He said he wished I'd let him put metal Damon on my front 6 teeth because those 6 will move slower than the rest of my mouth. That is why the lowers had moved so fast, correcting my Way Bad bite in just 3 weeks. He said for me to think about going all metal, because if all were metal, I'd be out of the braces faster.
>sigh ... f a s t e r . . . . .
SOOO I told him after my vacation, seeing my friends, I'll do it. All my family and friends know I have braces so faster sounds fantastic!! and the little Damon brackets are very easy to keep clean, so I actually won't miss those big clear brackets with their ligatures.... odd as it is, those 6 big brackets feel HUGE inside my mouth!!
Thank you again for sharing your story. Your smile is nice and the little specks of metal are not over powering.
I am so pleased to see I'm not the only one on the "fast track" to smile freedom!

On that note
Hi Athena, now that brings up a good question: How do you get through a speech or a presentation after a new adjustment? Here's my situation: Day 17 (i'm a newbie) with my braces (ceramic uppers/metal lowers) and I ALREADY sport a stuttering problem!!! (lucky me!)
How much time does it take you to 'adjust' to the adjustment and can speak with out a funny lisp or with out killing your cheeks, gums or lips?
Thanks for being here everyone....
Christine

Great Site
Thanks for the welcome!
Just a quick 'about me'; I'm a 39-year-old divorced mother of two previously-braced teenagers. I was close to getting braces almost 20 years ago, then chickened out right before the big day. (molds were done and everything!)
In conjunction with my new braces, I managed to break my right leg (fibula) in two places while mountain biking on Jan 13th. I've been riding for years (both road and mountain bikes) and was riding 4-5x a week when this happened. Two weeks later, the braces! I guess in a way, it was a good thing to keep the appt to get braced. It has kept my weight down that's for sure. (try going from four days a week of mountain biking-type eating to NOTHING and see what your stomach tells you!!!) The braces helped that; I simply didn't want to eat! With 9 pounds lost, I think it'll even out now...seeing as I can eat a better variety of foods now. It's just tough to stay positive and "keep the spirit up" when I think my spirit took off for a warmer climate! (did I mention I'm in MASS??)
Well, enough of my rambling. Thanks for "listening" and for helping me out here! I hope to be able to do the same for someone later down the road.
February 26th - extractions (4)
March 3rd - Cast comes off! (followed by PT)
March 12th - first adjustment!
Best to all!!
Christine

Hello Athena and others,
Have just caught up on your story-- Sounds like you are doing really well! I will be celebrating 66 years maybe before I am done with my ortho make-over! We are running a little behind schedule-- now we are in the 14th month. It was originally estimated at a year because we are only dealing with 6 lower teeth which were rotated and were trying to escape forward on the right. I found that I have to speak very deliberately (and still feel like I am lisping a little), especially with the power chain and the other little wedge gizmo that I have had lately. The chain also tends to abrade my mouth. I do feel bit self-conscious as I am teaching some classes in the senior enrichment program at the community college. I am having a great time doing it, and no one ever asks me about the braces!

It's all in how you see yourself!
Athena et al,
I am inspired! Glad to hear that nothing gets you down! I'm seeing comments about lisps....well, try having a speech impediment BEFORE braces (i've had it all my life actually) and THEN get braces! Oh man.......i'm fortunate that I work in IT and most of my contact with people is either with my team mates (who couldn't care less that I stutter) and email.
The countdown is on now for the four extractions. Tuesday is the day. I am nervous in general, but after reading everyone's experiences here on this site, I am confident that things will go quickly and without complication. The only issue is the two lower teeth are sorta impacted (they are almost laying flat) so that will take a little more time.
I am eating as much as I can NOW before Tuesday......bound to lose a couple more pounds....(i've already lost 10 in three weeks and don't really want to lose anymore). Generally, the teeth aren't bothering me too much; only when I'm really concentrating at work or stressed and I find myself grinding my teeth. (OUCH)
I hope everyone is doing well and thanks for reminding us to speak up!!
Best,
Christine
