Surgery while wearing a brace

Hi everyone!

My name is Sam, I'm 27 and have finally got around to having my teeth done.
I just found this site and am really excited as I'm having my bottom teeth brace fitted tomorrow. I have to have 2 teeth out then my top ones will be done too. Yay!

I have a quick question...

I may have to have a small operation in a couple of months (unrelated) and was wondering if you have to have the wire removed for this? I know hospitals make you remove all metal jewellery so does this count?

good morning , i had surgery a while back , an removing any bonded appliance wasn't needed , they said they would be very carefull an they were

Hi,

Glad you are joining the braced band wagon!

Internal fixed metal work is not a problem. External jewellery/metal etc is covered or removed to prevent burns/injury from diathermy used during procedures.

If your surgery is under local anaesthetic it will not matter.

I doubt it will be a problem if your surgery is under general anaesthetic but make your anaesthetist aware that you have a fixed brace as he or she will have to be aware of it when inserting an airway once you are under anaesthetic (this is why you are always asked if you have crowns or loose teeth as you do not want them to be knocked out)

I cant see it being a problem as lots of anaesthetists let patients keep dentures in as long they are well fitting.

Yeah I can relate to this one

Not sure what your surgury is for though.

On October 29th I was in a motorcycle accident and of course broke my tibia in my left leg, well I had to undergo surgury and was knocked out for the process as far as I remember is that I went into a cold operating room I was out cold and then I wake up in the hospital bed where I stayed for recovery for the next week... Braces had no effect on this surgury and I'm all better sort of... still recovering from the accident.

I had knee surgery while fully braced. I also had an MRI but it was on my knee and my head stayed out of the tube.

I'd be surprised if it posed any problem.

I just had septoplasty and turbinate surgery yesterday and it was no problem at all.
