A similar question:

I am a runner (just on roads and treadmills - no trails) and I will be having BSSO in a few months. To those runners out there who have had this surgery, how long was it until you felt comfortable getting back into running a few miles?

I tried running after two weeks or so, and it would have been fine, except that I had a bone graft taken from my hip and I had a bit of an ache there when I tried to run. So as long as you're not having a bone graft I would think you should be able to run after about two weeks.

Running might depend on your surgery. My OS said nothing jarring for first four weeks, including running. So no jogging for me for another two weeks

My surgeon specifically said not to go rock climbing or English horseback riding after surgery... uh. Not that I actually do either, but he had people in the past who did and messed things up.

I used to rock climb.... 10+ years ago. Now apparently isn't the time to start again. Huh. Funny, that.

I'm a ridiculously active guy, so It's good to hear that I can get back to running after about 2 weeks (The thought of taking that long off really saddens me though...)

But I'm wondering about how long till I can get back to weight lifting. I'm hoping within 4-6 weeks. Anyone have any opinions on this?

I have to agree with you there cl2003. I'm worried about taking 2 weeks off. I'm afraid of what it will feel like becoming active again after that much down time. Shoot, I take 3 days off and it feels like a month!

Since I haven't heard anyone else mention it I dunno if it's specific to my doc, but Week 4 for me is Monday and I'm still on the doctor ordered "don't lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk" plan. Which is starting to get annoying. One must go grocery shopping, after all.

My OS said that I could return to the gym after 4 weeks after the second procedure (which will be next Friday) but to only do cardio and light lifting. He doesn't want me to do anything that could or would cause a serious clenching of the teeth.

The best thing to do is simply ask your surgeon, because as someone who had to have a second operation, so soon after the first, I can attest that it is not something you want to experience. The muscles, tendons and nerves are already starting to reattach and they complain mightily when they get disturbed at this point.

Just work on your zen and yoga and exercise your inner self for another couple of weeks. Or take really long power walks. You've come this far, not put it in jeapardy now.

Not allowed Yoga as this requires head being lower than buttocks which is a no no for the nasal stuff according to my doctor.

Seriously? Am I the only one with these 'do not bend down, do not lift things, don't run" restrictions???

Have I mentioned that everything I'm attempting to puree in the blender ends up looking like barf? I'm living on Spaghetti-Os and cream of wheat because they aren't brown!!!

The only restriction I had on lifting and bending was for the first week post op. Now I'm just told not to do any lifting or movements that could cause me to overly clench the teeth or where i could fall or otherwise injure myself (although I did that on week two in my kitchen by just beind a klutz.

The only reason that I'm careful with lowering the head is because I still have some dizziness from inner ear swelling or something like that.

i found running to take longer to be able to get into than lifting. As i said i been lifting, climbing and more recently swimming, but I still feel wierd when i run, the up and down jolting is quite uncomfortable and its more than 4 weeks post my surgery. I still cant play soccer because of it.
