MommaDucky: update pg. 13 - nearly 6 mos!

Your progress is wonderful!! Glad to see things are moving forward so well and here's hoping for a shorter treatment time for you! I'm also trying to be the epitome of a perfect patient hoping that it will shorten my projected treatment time. The ortho originally told me 20-24 months, but I sure am hoping that my teeth will cooperate quicker than that and it ends up being less!!
P.S. Your pumpkin carving is AWESOME!

ARGH! I really need to get the hang of giving myself 10 minutes to get the heck onto A/W every once in a while so you guys don't think I've dropped off the face of the earth! Well, I'm still here, I've just been completely wrapped up by life.
I owe you lots of photos! I'll skip the chatter; direct replies to follow the pics.
Nov. 1st - 7th adjustment. Notice the *slight* filing done on the upper anterior four?!

right side w/ class I & II elastics

my brand new screech owl tattoo!
KK: Way cool you like tattoos as well. Aren't they addicting? I'd love to see a picture of your kiwi- sounds awesome!
As far as the elastics go, this is how I understand them: class I elastics go from one tooth to another within the same arch/quadrant. For example, I have elastics in all four "corners" if you will, each going from the canine to the adjacent first molar. Class II as far as I know just go from top arch to bottom arch, i.e. upper canine to lower first molar. I have no idea what class III is supposed to be!
Sandista: If it makes you feel any better, I don't draw the designs for the pumpkins! Anybody can do what I do, all you need is the time, the patience, and the steady hand. (And a template, in my case.) I can't draw worth peanuts, myself.
Oh, and I've lived in Minnesota all my life, and I hate the weather unless it's between 74-82 degrees outside, sunny, cloudless and still. I'm such a freeze-baby, I have a space heater that I plug in my bedroom, and I set it at least to 75 degrees, 80 if my husband isn't home. I plug it in as soon as September hits, and it doesn't go back into the closet until the final days of April have passed.
Have you enjoyed Los Angeles?? That sounds like an awesome way to spend some time before Thanksgiving... gets you prepared for all the stress to come! (At least, Thanksgiving gets stressful for me, as we always host Thanksgiving dinner.)
Our next vacation is from January 19th-26th -- we're going to Costa Rica for the second time. I'm really excited about it! Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving as well! And now I'm babbling too!
Denise: Yeah, my ortho treats me right, that's for sure! I might so well to start taking pain killers straightaway after an adjustment. At my last appointment on the first of November, I ended up taking Percocet because I was hurting so bad! I'm a girl who went sans-epidural during the birth of my son, but let me tell you, this was a whole different kind of pain! I was really sore for the first two days, couldn't really eat anything, but I'm fine now; not to mention I made lots of progress since then! I'm such a narcissist...
Also, thanks for your words about children-- you are so right about how they are genuine and the most wonderful teachers to boot. That's exactly what my tattoo is about: a daily reminder of how much I learn from my kids and to never take that for granted.
nerdgirl:: Thanks for the kudos, I appreciate it! I truly think that every person has the ability to either help or hinder the progress of their orthodontic treatment- I certainly believe that being a good patient and keeping on top of appointments and directions given by the ortho can make a difference in your treatment time. I was also told 20-24 months for my estimated treatment time, and now I'm being told it looks more like 14-19 months. So make sure you do everything you're told! Be a good ortho patient; it will undoubtedly pay off in the long run.
Well, there's lots of new things happening these days in my life, but I haven't got time to talk about it all. Doing some more household projects, getting ready for the holidays, watching my son grow like a WEED before my eyes-- (his first birthday is coming up on January 1st! Where has all the time gone?)
So, for now I will go. Enjoy the photos, hope everyone is doing well, and keep up the good work!!! ~K~

I went to St Paul once, in the summer and it was nice! I had my first lick of frisbee golf! I love your son's whoopee cushion costume, it's hilarious. Your teeth look awesome and I bet you'll be happy to get rid of those bands!

Hi Mommaducky
Oh my god!!! your son looks so adorable as a whoopie cushion, that costume is great and he has got the cutest face.
Your tattoo is gorgeous, the detailing on it is brilliant.
I have got a tattoo of an ankh on the small of my back. It is an ancient eygptian hieroglyphic and symbol of life. I would love to get another one but i dont know what i would get and where i would want it.
Your teeth are looking lovely and that slight bit of filing on your uppers really has made a lot of difference. Also your gaps are closing up nicely.
Hope it all keeps going well for you

Took a look at the Tattos. Not much of a person for them but if I were younger I'd probably have ten or so piercings.
Your teeth are really making progress. I remember the elastic configuration you have. When I had braces the first time, I had the exact elastic configuration except instead of power chains I had one elastic that went across the fronts. They'll do a good job closing the gaps.
I understand the not wanting to put a date in your head to be wire free. For the longest time I had decided to have an estimate of 24 months that would not change. I think that method allows you to focus on the process and not on an artificial beginning and ending date.
After the whoopie cushion (really cute costume) what's in store for your son for Christmas?
Mike

I wore braces (this time) for 1294 days or 3 years, 6 months and 17 days.

KK: Thanks for letting me know about class III. I learn something new every day! The elastics certainly are making a difference, I can feel it! Hopefully those gaps won't be too stubborn.
Miss Smiley: I agree, St. Paul in the springtime is quite nice. I enjoy living here. Frisbee golf.... that's something I haven't heard anyone mention for years! I played frisbee golf once when I was a kid, and I loved it! I'll have to check out some venues - that would be a fun thing for my 6 year old stepdaughter to enjoy when the weather is warm again. And yes, I will be pleased when I'm through with these elastics, but at the same time, I'm happy to have them if they help things along!
ThatsWhatSheSaid: Thanks a bunch, I was really thrilled about getting my teeth filed, even though it's only a little. Once my teeth are pretty much completely aligned, I'll definitely have my ortho do a bit more of that. As for the tattoo - it doesn't really take guts. The first minute of your first tattoo is nerve racking, but after that you're sitting there thinking, 'wow, this is really annoying. I have to sit through this for how long?' Really, for me, neither of my tattoos were painful. The best way I can describe the sensation is like a really obnoxious pounding on your skin. If you're dealing with sharper lines, that can sometimes get a little more touchy, but doesn't feel any worse than a paper cut. In fact, it just about feels like paper cuts. The bigger the needle in the machine, the better! At least, I've found that the larger needles are more comfortable. Weird, though, I certainly would have expected the opposite. Anyone else out there with tattoos agree?
hannahwebbo: Hey there -- good to hear from you again! It's been a while. I really need to make some time to get on other people's blogs and make some comments. In any case, I think you're absolutely right about my son having the cutest face, but of course I'm biased.... I'm really happy with my tattoo, and now it's finally finished healing, so no more itchy dry skin! I just love that my tattoo was done by a guy who calls himself 'Poohki'. As for the Egyptian ankh, I'm definitely familiar with those. I used to own a pair of earrings shaped as such. In fact, my maiden (hyphenated) last name was Aten, which although my heritage is Heinz 57 and doesn't include any Egyptian, I have always associated with Aken Aten, a prevalent character in ancient Egyptian history. (AKA akhenaten or Amenhotep IV) Random blabber, I know! But you just made me think of that.
iBorg: Another stranger! Good to hear from you again as well. I like your comment about piercings, just because I used to have all kinds of funky piercings. Some are rather unmentionable, but some of the more creative stuff include sub-dermal eyebrow piercings that were horizontal, and some custom ear work on my left side. I'll post pics of that stuff just for you! Of course I had to grow up sometime, so most of my crazy stuff no longer exists, but I do still have the ear jewelry. Anyway, to answer your question about Felix's holiday attire, I'm afraid he'll hate me for this, but he's going to be wearing some nice houndstooth patterned trousers, a white button down collared shirt with dark grey pinstripes, a velvet sport jacket, and chuck taylors on his little feet. There's also a red clip on tie, but I don't know how far he'll really let me go with this. I suppose that if i don't want him to completely loathe the pictures of him from this Christmas, I ought to gel his hair straight back and hand him a cigar and a glass of warm brandy... bet he'd like to show his friends that when he's in high school.
Anywho, I had my 8th adjustment on Monday afternoon, and have all kinds of new stuff happening. First off, I've got new powerchains again, but this time it's different! Because of the extraction gaps where all four of my first bicuspids were taken out, my P/C's would only extend from canine to canine on both upper and lower arches. Now that the gaps are starting to make more progress (save for the one on the upper right) the P/C on the upper arch goes from left molar to right canine, and the P/C on the lower arch goes from molar to molar! I'm pretty stoked about that. Also, now I've upped the ante on the elastics as well, I had been wearing 'rams', and have no bumped up to 'impalas'. I think the rams are 1/4" in diameter, whereas the impalas are 5/16"... but don't quote me, because I haven't got the little baggies in front of me. So anyway, with the same configuration- four in the class I position as well as class II on both right and left, I'm feeling a little sore! I've got a purple P/C on top; black on bottom. No pictures of the teeth for you today, I'm afraid. I've decided that since I'm SO CLOSE to my six month mark (and because I've had the stomach flu for the last two days), I'll just take photos on Friday and post them at that time. I can't believe it's been six months already! The treatment time really is flying by. I certainly thought this process would be far more agonizing than it actually is! (mentally, not physically!)
So, for iBorg's entertainment (hehe) I'm only posting pictures of piercings today. You'll have to check back this weekend to see my latest! Hope you're all having a great week so far. Cheers!!
notice I can no longer wear earrings in the first piercing in my lobes; due to the fact that I'd stretched the holes to about 7/16" back in high school. I've been thinking of having them sutured and re-pierced......
just under where you see the diamond stud here, there is another piercing, it goes through the lower conch and exits through the back. That one hurt.
and a completely AWFUL photo of me, but this is the best one I have of my eyebrow piercings. You can see that the barbells are about an inch long, and they go just under the surface of the skin in a horizontal fashion.
Nothing more exciting. I'll get those photos up at the six month mark! Woo-Hoo for me!!!

I have to admit the eyebrows do nothing for me. I love the ears! While I'm not a fan of gauging up, (look ma I have a 1/2 inch washer in my ears), I love tasteful ear decorations. Yours are quite attractive.
As for the elastics, you sound like you're making real progress. Are you starting to think you're at least halfway there? What I've found with elastics that seems weird is at first they hurt like everything. Now it hurts to have them out for any length of time.
Keep this up and soon you'll be choosing retainer colors.
Mike

Hi Katherine,
I'm new to AW and just read your story - wow you've been through a lot and have made amaaaaaazing progress! I can't believe you were able to take care of your son while recovering from extractions - I couldn't even take care of myself! Looking forward to seeing your future updates!
Oh yeah, and I'm also a string player from St. Paul!

Hi MommaDucky,
Just getting caught up on your amazing progress... nice pics there! I just started on a class III elastic on my right side to fix my mid-line...
And I didn't know you were quite the avid fan of tattoos/piercings! At one point I had both earlobes, both tragus, and septum pierced. I took them all out though. I still have 11 tattoos though.
Till next time,
~Victor

Hi Momma Ducky,
I finally read the response you left for prior to me leaving for LA last Thanksgiving. I've lived here all of my life too and I completely agree with you - the warmer weather is FAR superior to this cold crap we have been having this winter. Is is just me, or has winter been extra long and extra cold this year?
Oh well, spring is 17 days & counting! LA was really nie when I went over Thanksgiving week, thought stressful because it was all work-related. I also caught a nasty cold from the airplane (aka "germ tube") so I had no sense of taste at Thanksgiving. It all tasted like cardboard flavored with a lot of salt. UGH!
I have another trip to LA coming the day after my next (and hopefully final) adjustment. Hopefully all will go well with the adjustment and with the trip. My last adjustment was on 2/19 and I not have purple metallic powerchains, top & bottom and have to call my ortho to get my upper wire clipped. I have a very tiny avatar of what my teeth look like (I took it today at work), but it really doesn't show much unfortunately. I'm very excited to get these things off and see my big new smile - I am very please with my results thus far. You have to be ectatic about your as well - coming along VERY nicely!
How was your trip to Costa Rica? I m planning a trip to Belize at the end of April, so I'm dying to hear what you did and how your experience was!
Your owl tattoo is really cool - what inspired the owl design? Love your piercings too - I have quite a few on my ears and a naval piercing, but I had to stop the piercings (I figured I have enough holes in my head now! Ha ha ha). I can imagine some of the piercings in your ears must have hurt something awful - you're a brave gal.
Hope all is going well with you and I look forward to seeing more pics!
Best,
Sandista

How was your trip to Costa Rica? I m planning a trip to Belize at the end of April, so I'm dying to hear what you did and how your experience was!
Your owl tattoo is really cool - what inspired the owl design? Love your piercings too - I have quite a few on my ears and a naval piercing, but I had to stop the piercings (I figured I have enough holes in my head now! Ha ha ha). I can imagine some of the piercings in your ears must have hurt something awful - you're a brave gal.
Hope all is going well with you and I look forward to seeing more pics!
Best,
Sandista
