Braced 3 hours- Bracket off

#1 Post by Crymsyn »

I had my braces put on today at about 1 pm. The appointment took 2 hours which was horribly painful for my TMJ.

We struggled to get the brackets on my lower teeth far enough down that my bite was comfortable. My jaw is very tight and my bite is off due to the damage the TMJ has done. I don't bite consistantly when I close my jaw so we had to run through the bracket adjustment process several times. One of the bracket corners had to be ground down so that my Upper Canine could rest. It wasn't 100% right when I left the office but I wrote it off to everything being new and unfamiliar.

By 4 pm one of my lower brackets had popped off. And it wasn't the one that had the corner ground down either. My ortho's office is only open Mon-Thurs so I had to leave a message.

I'm hoping this isn't a sign of what to expect over the next 18 months.

So sorry things went so badly at your bonding appointment. I'm sure things will improve as soon as they settle and you get used to all the extra hardware in your mouth, it took me about the first two months to get the bracket popping behind me (at that point I was getting real down about going through that for two years) but in the last three and a half months all my brackets have stayed put. So hang in there, things must get better soon!
Best of luck ! :)

Hi Crymsyn,

Congrats on getting your braces, I'm sorry that you had a rough time. I was kind of in the same situation as you. My ortho placed the majority of my brackets, my bite was so messed up beforehand. My arches were done the same day, but I got to rest my jaw in between as well. I also had an issue with my upper canine hitting one of my lower brackets, I was back in the office 4 days later, needed my wires clipped. My ortho said that tooth was ok, and two weeks later I was back for the same issue and then he needed to place a bumper on my lower left canine. My upper centrals were hitting my lower brackets and I was back in two days ago and I'm sporting two more bumpers in my lower centrals. I have my second adjustment on 3/5, now I'm curious to see what happens next.

Don't worry, you'll get it repaired on Monday. Your teeth are going to shift a ton, I've already had to go in 3 times for emergency appointments all because my upper teeth are knocking into my lower brackets. Everything will be fine.

Sheesh CactusZAF! Two months to get the brackets to stay in place seems like a bit much. I'm hoping it won't take me that long. :)

Thanks!

You put a lot of effort into getting the brackets right.

When I woke up this morning, my TMJ was agonizing. I was in so much pain I didn't want to move and not from my teeth! My joint was soooo unhappy and I had another bracket off.
My bite wasn't 100% right when they put the braces on but I wrote that off to everything being unfamiliar. The bracket that was the most uncomfortable is the 2nd one that came off. I have TMJD due to my clenching. I guess the TMJ worked overtime last night to clench down on that bracket :( My bite won't be denied! lol
Anyway, that's my guess about why I was in terrible pain instead of just really bad pain. I called the on-call number my ortho leaves. The doctor's voice mail was full but the technician answered. She was really, really nice and sympathetic. (She was previously braced to correct her TMJD as well.) She fixed my brackets and adjusted the others that were uncomfortable with my bite. She even brushed up the teeth that had extra glue on them.

I'm glad I got it fixed rather than suffering for the next four days.

I guess, but it was made very clear to me if I'm having issues of any type call the office. My teeth are moving like crazy, my bite changes almost on a daily basis. So, this past Wednesday, I called the office and spoke with one of the ortho techs and told her what was going on and she said I could come in and I would probably need bumpers or I could wait until my next appointment (which was two weeks away), but she said that I would be better off coming in. I was hoping that when I went in that I'd have my next adjustment early... NO SUCH LUCK! It was a madhouse when I was there anyway. My ortho came by and before the assistant really started talking about which teeth, the ortho said are we having problems with that lower bumper and she like we are dealing with the lower centrals now. He took a look and one of my upper centrals is touching my lower bracket and the other one is just about there. So, the assistant said to me, good thing that you called or you could have chipped that tooth (upper central -- which I chipped back in October -- that was the last straw and that was the beginning of my ortho journey)

As far as the TMJ goes, you may be more conscious of it now that you were before. You're also feeling discomfort as well. Take OTC pain relievers, when needed and definitely stay hydrated.

I just saw your thread about the new adhesive regarding ceramics, hhangel. I go back to have my 3rd bracket re-attached on Wednesday and I can't wait to ask.

3 brackets in less than 4 days seems like way too much! Especially when I'm only eating Chef Boyardee and protein shakes.

You might need to have a tooth guard made for you by your ortho. The guard would keep your upper and lower teeth from meeting. You wouldn't be grinding your brackets or teeth that way.

I had a couple of brackets that kept popping off in my first six months of treatment. Now that my teeth have moved enough, the brackets are stable. I also had braces put on because of a bad bite/TMJ. Nowadays I don't have to wear the mouth guard every night!

Hang in there, your mouth is going through a lot of changes.

I have turbo stops behind my two front teeth -- prevents me from being able to knock off the lower braces with my upper teeth. Hated them at first because it was difficult to eat anything that wasn't liquified because none of my teeth really touch anymore - but somehow over the past couple of weeks - I have learned to eat and am eating solids again.

Hi Jembrace :)

We have plans for a guard in about 4 months. The ortho thinks my teeth are going to be moving too much between now and then to be work making a guard that won't fit for more than two weeks.

She told me that if my TMJ gets worse or gets beyond my tolerance level that we can try it. So far, I trust her.

Hi METALMOUTHPOOH :)

I am always happy to meet a fellow Floridian. I moved to NC for 5 years but had to come back- I missed the ocean way to much. Now I live on an island and have an amazing view of the bay.

That doesn't sound like much fun at all :(

I saw the orthodontist today and she made a lot of changes. I'm disappointed that I didn't take pictures right after I got braced, but I thought I would have time.

Now I have no brackets on the bottom front teeth, some molar brackets have been moved down- closer to my gum line, and I got a new spring in the front.

The ortho said that my teeth are really strong, which is good, but that they don't etch or bond well. This could account for some of the bracket problems I've had or it could also be due to a set of bad brackets. She explained that another patient had similar difficulties with the Mystique brackets two weeks ago.

The good news is that my teeth are moving so quickly that I got another spring in the front- 3 weeks ahead of schedule! She says that if I keep up this type of movement, we will be able to make the bite plate sooner.

I was in good amount of pain before she made the corrections and adjustments but now it's really hurting. And I had just gotten to the point that I could chew- sort of- with the back teeth. I guess I'm starting over.
