Braces on 2 hours ago!!!

#1 Post by socks »

Hey!
I did say hi about 6 weeks back but then have been awaiting my orthodontists plan of treatment! I went today thinking we would be discussing it and left with ceramic braces on my top teeth! Bottom braces to go on in 2 months, may need extractions too but she is waiting to see wot my teeth do!
anyway! just wanted to say hi and that i know now how it feels, quite weird and like sumone is tugging on my teeth!
feel a bit like ugly betty and very subconscious about smiling :(
oh well! 2 years to go!
:)

Welcome to having braces!
You're going to do great!!

I have all metal braces and they are ok - really! I know with the metal my correction will go faster so I'm all for that.

and I have to laugh about you being Ugly Betty! I just love her!

Take your advil tonight so it will help you tomorrow!!

A quick question!

#4 Post by socks »

Thanks for the welcome bracedagain and pebbles!
It has been 5 days since getting braced now and so far so good, feeling less and less selfconscious and some of my friends havent even noticed!!

Was just wondering if anyone could help me with a quick question tho, the tooth that has the last bracket on (my right side) is much more painful than the other teeth and I can't bite down even gently on that one atall! Is this because it is the 'anchor' tooth, being the last tooth at the back of my mouth that is braced so its taking more strain?! Just a bit worried as don't want to wait 4 weeks till I see my ortho again and then her tell me I should have come back and seen her! :?
Any thoughts or anyone who has experienced the same, would be greatly appreciated!

Think this site is fab! I don't feel so alone in brace land! and if I have a question I can just ask you all! :D

How is everyone else getting on?

Hi Socks and congratulations!!! :-)o I'd definately call your ortho - it doens't hurt to ask questions. I'm sure they expect it from newbies. I too went in for a consultation and almost got talked into being braced. I was like, "whoa.... let me have a drink first". I'm so glad I didn't chicken out 'cause I really am impressed with how they work. As far as the pain, I found that using a bite-wing helps - just chew it out. But for sure, call the ortho if you are concerned.

Good luck on your journey and take pics - they really tell the story.

Thanks SGPWired! I know the right thing to do is just call my ortho and ask, just don't want them to think i'm asking silly questions! But will call first thing tomorrow!
So far so good other than that, went out for lunch yesterday and was a bit self consious about eating so took my mini braces travel kit with me and rushed to the bathroom afterwards to check all was ok!!
Out of interest and forgive my ignorance but was is a bite-wing??!
Will take sum piccies today!
Thanks for ure help :D

I know the feeling about eating out and being self-conscious. Three weeks and I still feel like half my meal is clinging to my braces. Once I had a piece of lettuce hanging around the front of my teeth. I didn’t realize it and no one said anything!! You just gotta laugh or go hungry.

I’m not sure if bite-wing is correct terminology, but my ortho gave me a plastic semi-circle to bite and I found it helpful the few days after my B-day. I’m sure chewing sugar free gum like Exrtra helps, but I’m leery about chewing gum with braces. I’ve read too on AW that chewing in general works the gum muscles and eases the teeth movement. I have yet to break out the OTC anesthetic – which is a good thing since I have a low threshold of pain.

Keep us posted on what your ortho says and good luck on journey!
