Hey Lou :D
Well i don't like my profile and i guess when my extraction gaps are closed my bite might not line up so i guess i might have to see how it pans out. I said what happens if i don't want the surgery and the ortho said he wouldn't treat me because it'd be purely cosmetic so i'd have to go private. I'm just worried about my chin cos i hate it already and its gonna stick out if i have my jaw moved forward!

I haven't found much difficulty with telling people. Most people do give me the, "OMG Surgery?!" response, but then I just explain to them its basically for TMJ and my bite doesn't line up, I'm in pain, etc, etc and they seem to get it.

I've changed the way I've explained it to people though because when I would explain that my jaw grew asymmetrical due to condylar hyperplasia as the basis for my discomfort people always would say, "Wait, I never noticed! Let me look at you!" Then its like from that point on people would say they noticed my jaw and whatnot. I'm already self-conscious about my jaw's outward appearance, so I'd just rather not draw more attention to it now.

hey what ad say if you don't feel confortable telling people about your surgery then don't

what i found is people had to double take me after i had my surgery but they still knew it was me after that second glance and no one ever asked omg what happened you look soo different the responce was more you look really good and you look different but i can't place what it is most people came to the conclution ad had a new hair cut lol

sooo really people are more wrapped up in them selfs and if you don't feel confortable talking about your surgery openly then don't

Hey meryaten,
Did you get any sort of before and after shots where they show what you might look like after surgery? I think with me its just fear of the unknown-i have no idea how its going to make me look and so i can't prepare myself for it. I know its still a longway off but it doesn't stop me worrying...at the hospital they said they would put me in touch with someone who had had the same thing done so i could talk about it and see how their scars have healed, but, as i thought, it hasn't happened. So its just left in my head ticking over and worrying :?

meryaten,
im hoping to get a digital model before my surgery but im a little worried as to how accurate they are. how did you feel about yours? was it an accurate prediction of what you looked like after surgery?

I got a digital model, and if anything... looking at the before picture was enough to assure me that I will definitely look better afterwards. Even though I consider myself thin, when I looked at my side profile picture, I noticed that I have a double chin, just because my lower jaw is so recessed back into my head. I know it will take a while to get used to the "after" look, but I am looking at it as a way to redefine myself and start a new chapter. The newer, functional eater! And, like someone else said, get an awesome haircut! It can't hurt. I think I may try to do something drastic with my hair after. Maybe go curly, to hide the incisions next to my ears..... change of color?

Yes Yes Yes I had this too!!!!!!! I totally thought I was imagining it now being different, thought it was weight loss or something but it's because the upper jaw goes higher now than it used to because of surgery!!!

I also just got the awesome haircut last week:) BIG difference. AND I bought new sunglasses... VERY essential, so many more styles look amazing now! Woot!

They have to make an incision along my ears for the joint reconstruction to relocate my dislocated discs, I am unsure exactly where or how long. His assistant said either right in front of the ear or along the hair line above the ear to get access to the joint space.
