Dental Costs

#1 Post by KissMe »

Hello,

its my first time on the site and i'm really happy to have found it. I never knew about lingual braces before today and it just seams too good to be true. i love the idea.

So, i have been reading a bunch of posts but i don't see too much information on the cost of them. Can you help me out? i would like top and bottom. what kind of things affect the price? the length of having them on? and what kind of ways are there to pay for them? do you know of any insurance companies or that sort of thing? i heard of orthobanc... how do they work? and how about traveling to different countries to get dental work done? i have heard Thailand is a good place to get work done and at almost half the price.

I'm living in canada right now if that help tailor your information. i'm not too worried abouth ow long they would be on as i'm just excited to see this possibility of even having them. thanks in advance for your help. i'm so happy to know about linguals.

Hi Kiss Me,

Linguals are great but I really don't think it would be a good idea to go overseas for them at all. From personal experience, I would say that you should choose an orhto that is convenient to home and work for you as you will probably see him/her very often! I know I do.

Anyhow, good luck with your reserch.

As a rough guide they are approx double the price of doing it conventionally. In the UK that is from £2,500 per arch. You need to return to the orthodontist at roughly 6 weekly intervals to get adjustments, so not sure if it would work to go overseas, unless you planned to say there for the course of treatment.

Lingual uppers and ceramic lowers is a popular combination, this would reduce the cost. Also some people find lowers linguals less comfortable, as your tongue rests against the lower teeth. Having said that there are many people on this site who have upper and lower linguals and love them.

Good luck

I agree, do not go too far from home. Besides regular visits (I go every 3 weeks because my teeth are moving quickly) you'll inevitably have the broken wire, popped off powerchain, or metal poking emergency visit between regular visits. My ortho is an hour and even that's a hassel! Unless you want to travel to Thailand every 4-6 weeks (which is required), I would advise against that!

I went to NYC for mine and the cost was $7000 for uppers only, for a failry mild case of crowding, and roughly 12 months of treatment time. Insurance generally does not cover the cost of Linguals but if you have a good dentist and he can sometimes pull some strings with the insurance company.

In the UK my linguals are costing £7000. Normal braces would have been £2500. Well worth the extra money in my opinion! As has been said, pick an ortho close to home. Some weeks i've been in 3 times for bits falling off or breaking lol

Thanks for the info guys. seams everyone agrees that picking one place close to home is the way to go

But how about going somewhere cheaper to get them put on then somewhere close to home to keep them in check? cant you do that like brining a car to a different garage. you dont need to get the dealership maintenance do you? if the expensive part getting them put on or are you paying for each visit?

I don't really see how that would work. If u had braces fitted by one ortho and maintained by another, the 2nd ortho would need to have the treatment plan decided on by the 1st ortho. That would assume that the 2 orthos would be willing to cooperate in order to save you a few pounds... which they probably wouldn't as they know they have a captive market.

The total cost of the treatment plan should include unlimited visits in order to maintain your braces. The only thing mine doesnt include is replacing broken wires(and i havent broken one so far after 14 months). If you can find a different ortho willing to see you just for maintenance of your braces, he is likely to charge you for each individual visit. Over 18 months you would probably end up spending more than just using one ortho.

I agree. I've never even heard of that being done. Even if you did find 2 orthos to participate, after you pay the one in China, plus a roundtrip flight to Thailand, plus whatever fee the ortho near your home will charge, you'd probably just be better off getting it all done in one place. I imagine a plane ticket to a destination like that would be in the $2000-$3000 range. And god for bid you have to go back for any reason..there's another $2000. I'm all for cutting corners, but there are some things I'd just rather pay a little extra for. I've learned the bond you build with your ortho is an important one.

The total cost for my treatment came to $10,500 for ibraces top, ceramics bottom. Ridiculous, yes I know. I had this same question before I got them and I couldn't find out anywhere. I swear they keep it a secret.
