Enamel Damage During Debond

#1 Post by LondonLingual »

Has anyone else suffered enamel damage when they had their ceramic brackets removed? I had to have my front tooth rebuilt with composite yesterday after it was badly damaged during debonding. I will have a veneer later but I want to try and get some compensation as I believe things went very wrong and the whole thing was totally avoidable. I won't go into details but the whole experience was a nightmare. Very upset. Anyone had this experience? Advice please... considering what to do next.

Not personally, but the child of friends had a similar experience with metal brackets. I don't think it was as bad as what you describe happened to you and I don't know how the issue was resolved in her case.

Check the small print to see if you have any leverage.

But congrats on finishing up, anyway.

:o I'm shocked and SO sorry for your experience. I have not seen any messages from someone who had this happen in 2 years of visiting this site.. I am sure I must have missed someone? I was under the impression that it should not happen provided the orth knows his/her strategy and has the proper tools.

I wish I had some experience to offer you, and yes I do think you are entitled to compensation. The cost of fixing the problem provided you have followed all the orthos instructions and everything looked good--- again I am so sorry for what happened.

Speaking for myself- I would love to hear the details. I also have ceramics and know they can be tricky to remove. Which tools were used? Who removed the brackets? What ceramics do you have?

Again... I hope you are able to get the veneers soon so you can enjoy your beautiful new smile. I have a friend with veneers to fix a broken tooth- and it has been amazing for him

Hi-

Did you by any chance have ICE ceramic brackets? There is a special tool they are supposed to use when removing that type of bracket. I had my ICE brackets taken off the first time without the correct tool and it hurt like crazy and many brackets didn't come off cleanly. Unfortunately, due to sme shifting in my upper teeth I had ICE brackets put on my uppers again, however, they were removed with the correct tool. It made all the difference in the world. There was far less scraping which I suppose could damage enamel. Did your cermics come off cleanly???

Well yes my brother infact his front tooth was slightly cracked when his braces were removed and they had to bond the tooth! It sucked so bad he spend 3 1/2 years with them to come out with a cracked tooth. But in all honesty (I was about 11 when he got them off so I don't remember much) But I do remember him not taking care of his teeth very well. I had an expander on at the time so we had ortho appointments on the same days and our ortho was always like, "I know your not wearing your elastics!" or things like, "you gotta do better with your cleanings!" so I think it partly was his fault for not stepping up and cleaning his teeth like he should of but mind you he was a kid too so kids tend to do that. I worry about the same things like will they crack a tooth or will my molar crack (one that is weak from a filling) when taking off the brackets but I try not to think about it. The difference with me is I take REALLY good care of my teeth while in braces so I don't fear it so much.

Sorry to hear of your experience.

Unfortunately a friend of mine had the same thing happen to her on her very front upper tooth. It was like the whole tooth was 'peeled'. I was astounded, not just that it happened, but that it didn't seem to worry her.
As she wasn't too concerned, I don't think she pursued the matter. However, the tooth had no sheen and looked yellow to me.

Good luch with getting some resolution to your issue - and of course congrats on actually having them removed! Hope you're happy with the resuluts otherwise..

I'm sorry this happened to you. I worry about that too, especially with having a crown and very small front teeth.
It's never too late to fix your smile! :)

thanks everyone for your support, I am persuing the matter but first I need some night time retainers and fixed retainers so I am having to keep it calm for now. I hear this is normally done immediately but it looks like I will have to wait a week as they could only offer me one slot that I couldnt make. I am now worried that in the 7 days the teeth will shift. I have been quoted £950 for a proper veneer to cover this up and have already spent money on a composite veneer for the meantime. I am hoping they will compensate me and I will let you know the outcome. As far as the tools they used i know they got the wrong one as I had mystique below and they used the same on the mystique as on the clarity which I understand is wrong! i will let you all know what happens. Many thanks.
