We did the last turn of the expander last night! Wahoo! I have a lovely gap now. It's not huge, but it's big enough to be noticeable. My two huge spaced-out bumpy-edged front teeth now make me look like I have the mouth of a ten-year-old boy. But that should go away soon and I'll hopefully start to resemble my gorgeous sister instead.

Hey guys.
I am 16 yrs old and I am having SARPE on August 4th 2008.
I am sooo sooo soo nervous! Like you have no idea!
I have a few questions...
well..more then a few haha.
1. Are there any risks to SARPE? Are they rare?
2. when you wake up, do you have any tubes in side of you? (besides the IV)
3.Do you teeth become very wobbely after surgery?
4.Where do they cut you exactly? In your gums?
5. How long is the surgery?
6. This is my mouth.... its terrible but it will be fixed!

AjikanPanda, Wow you will be so pleased when you have your SARPE. It has really changed my life. I'll answer any questions I can:
1. Are there any risks to SARPE? Are they rare?
I don't remember all of them, but I didn't have any complications. I still have some numbness, but it is almost gone.
2. when you wake up, do you have any tubes in side of you? (besides the IV)
I only had the IV which was taken out an hour or two after the surgery.
3.Do you teeth become very wobbely after surgery?
Yes, but it doesn't last to long. Eating is hard for a week or two then starts getting easier and more solid feeeling. It doesn't really feel wobbly. I felt like I was trying to chew with marshmallow teeth.
4.Where do they cut you exactly? In your gums?
Yes. accross the front and along your back molars (if it was like mine). Right at the very top where your gum meets the inside of your lip. I am not sure how big the area cut was -it was to sensitive for me to look. I had lots of stiches. Mine never rally hurt, they were sensitive and itchy.
5. How long is the surgery?
I think not longer than an hour or two.

Yes, You need to do this, You'll be so happy afterward!

Mine did slightly. I like the way I look, People say I look happier now. you'll probably see a subtle difference. Your jaw is very narrow, so you face will probably look fuller afterward.

I am not sure what you mean, but your upper jaw will be wider and crossbite wil be fixed either immediately or with braces.

-->OH that’s great! I heard from another person that he still had the breathing tube when he woke up (the one that goes from your nose to your belly?) and he said I’m going to have a sore throat for a while, so I am expecting that.

-->You know know how much more relived I am to know they cut your gum and not the actual palate. You even experience inchiness with mouth surgery? Odd. I know after my back surgery my scare was inching sooo badly!

-->Oh what I meant is that, my front that a little bit behind my bottom teeth, my surgeon wanted me to do Lefort 1 and I am trying my best to get out of it, so I was hoping SARPE would help my front teeth(on the top) come over my bottom teeth.

wobbly teeth
my two front teeth were wobbly for quite some time after surgery. though, i was reassured, they would not fall out. just make sure you are careful not to hit your face on anything or do anything that will put you at risk to damage your teeth. they are wobbly because in SARPE, you are literally parting your mouth in half...the teeth naturally want to stay, so they shift to stay in the bone. as new bone grows between your two front teeth (i had a dip in my gums between my two front teeth that you could see and feel upon close inspection, which had no bone), your teeth will shift back to center on their own as new bone grows and the new bone will harden to hold your teeth stable. though, new new bone and healing wont start until your OD stops the expander from widening your jaw. i also suggest your read the SARPE thread.

I actually got my upper braces well before the surgery. I'm not sure how common this is, but I've really appreciated that it has given me time to get used to them. My teeth somehow felt well supported by the PE and the wires!

However I had a question myself about numbness. I had my operation on 7/24 and am now recovering well (I'm already back at work), but I was initially numb across both cheeks, nose, and entire top lip, as well of course upper gums. My surgeon is acting like this is normal, and maybe it is, but it's a much larger area than I expected. Has anyone else had such extensive numbness?

Risk of blindness

Well I got my expander on today. Its very awkward but I'm getting used to it already.
I'm a bit worried now that without the SARPE this expander will do no good, considering there's 16 year olds getting SARPE but I'm not and I'm 19... my ortho said my palate will be expanded about 6 mm. I don't know whether thats a significant amount or not. My ortho got full x rays and stuff to be able to tell whether or not my palatal suture was fused, so I sure hope he's doing the right thing.
