Hey, that's ok

#21 Post by bracesweden »

Hi LongInTheT,

its cool about the multiple messages...sometimes my computer and I are the best of friends and sometimes it just is a pest, so no problem!!

I read your story and yes I think we have somewhat similar case history and the gaps between my teeth is as big (if not bigger) as yours, but you already have made some real good progress!!

I too did not see any adults with braces here in Sweden, but my ortho has said that it is becoming quite common.... I have already told all my colleagues at work that I will be getting braces and if any day I am a bit grumpy, it can be 'coz of them. They have actually been putting up with my numerous disappearing acts - due to dental appointments and have seen me through my surgeries, so they are as eager as me for the next step!! :P

Yes, my ortho has also decided that we need to go slow as the teeth anyway are moving and they dont want to move them too fast or put too much pressure as I have some significant bone loss :( But I am sure the end result will be good....atleast hoping so.

All the best with your progress and do post pics when you can. It feels great to see the changes!!

Ciao for now!

Bracesweden - FINALLY braced!!!

#22 Post by bracesweden »

The B-day was TODAY!! YAY!

Now I have brand new shiney braces - only on top teeth for the time being - the bottoms to be put on friday. But PUH :yuck: I have 3 separators...nasty things. Just feel like using a toothpick on them.

I got selfligating metal braces - which as of now do not feel so bad...I mean I know I still have the night and the next coming days to see how it feels PLUS I still have to get braced on the bottom teeth..but still, it feels just fine.

Eating is definitely going to be a challenge :( but I can definitely loose more than a couple of kilos!!

Here are some pics - of my brand new braces. All the teeth are not yet anchored and I have some separators - the anchoring will be done in three parts...details later.

I'm very interested to see the progression in closing that gap!

I have a friend with a similar 5mm diastema.

Congrats on making it through b-day! :jump: I got my braces on today too, but my pictures didn't come out as good as yours. I hope you're weathering the spacers ok and that the next few days will just fly by, pain-free!

I'm just catching up since my last post here. How cool to find a group of us going through the same thing! Ken, I lost a molar during osseous surgery, too. Mine was on the lower left. The root fractured during the surgery so the tooth had to go. I posted pics on my story (click WWW if interested).

bracesweden, how on earth did you get those pics of your surgery? It's amazing to see what we go through to save our teeth! I used to get upset at fillings because my mouth felt funny afterward. Man, that seems so trivial now! How is it being done in three steps? Mine was broken into two steps, first the uppers then the lowers.

I hope your first day in braces goes well, and I can't wait to hear from you about it!

Bracesweden - first day in braces

#26 Post by bracesweden »

Hi everyone!

Thanks a ton for stopping by my post.

real2 yes, I have some serious gaps :x and that is what made me long for braces...like forever! I am also very excited/eager to know how it will close...after having a whole lifetime of gaps, it will be really cool to have them close. I will keep my posts updates, so that I can see the progress...

iamtheotherme wow! so we start our brace journey together! How long are you scheduled to be in braces? My ortho says that I will have braces for around 1-1½ years. But that is not the end of the road for me. Like I said before, I will have to go for lots of extractions and prosthetics / bridges for the extractions  Will kepp posted! Well, I took pics as soon as I came home as I want to document my brace-journey. The pics are not too great, had to do a lot of editing...but I am sure with practice they will be better. One tip is do not keep the camera too close - then the pics will be hazy. As most of the spams now a days have atleast 5.0 megapixels, the pics will be quite clear even if taken from a distance.

catfish, yes it seems some of us with perio problems are going through the brace journey almost at the same time - though you and Ken are ahead of me :). My tooth had to be extracted as it was not only quite painful, but was also beyond saving and would have been a threat for the other teeth nearby.

Aren't my operation pics something!!! Well, I managed to get the pics as my perio is actually doing his PG at the clinic that I go to. In Sweden, we dont have any private clinics for advanced dental work (there are some but they mainly do basic cleaning and maintenance work and nothing advanced) and everyone goes to the governmental / state owned hospitals/dental centers - I guess somewhat like your NHS.

As my case was severe, I was sent to the main dental university + research center where they also have a training facility. I got a student perio who is really thorough!! They have to treat a certain number of cases to get their specialisation and I am one of the cases, so they document very carefully the whole process and I got loads of pics (I had requested for them) documenting right from the first time I was there...and it will continue even during my braces and after when I have to have implants. I kid with my perio that if he is successful with a complicated case like mine then he should directly get a Ph.D

And yes, it was definitely not easy to have all the surgeries done...I who used to be scared sh..less of shots!!! But one gotta do what one gotta do!! There was no option.

My braces are being put in three steps - yesterday I got brackets on all the upper teeth, but only 5 were anchored. I got 3 spacers - and those teeth will get bands. On Friday I will get braces on the lower and I am guessing again some spacers for banding and finally on 26th the anchoring etc etc will be done. Why in three stages?? No idea!!

My first day in braces was just fine. I dont have any pain, only the anchored teeth feel little sore. But on the other hand because of the spacers, I find that I cant chew down on anything...but I guess the pain will come when I am fully braced. So far it is just fine!!! Touchwood!! Brushing is going to be a challenge...especially with my perio problem, I dont know how I will manage when all the teeth are anchored.

Do any of you know if it is better with el-toothbrush? I use an el-toothbrush, but I am scared my brackets may come off....Please help!!!

Will write more on Friday after the lowers are also braced.

So long guys, have fun!!!

You've been on quite a journey so far, haven't you? It sounds like you're in great hands with the dental school. Do you ever look back and go "whoa, I can't believe how far I've come?" I did that yesterday in my ortho's parking lot. A year an a half ago, I was sobbing on my couch because I'd broken a tooth and was scared poopless to go to the dentist when I hadn't been in 7 years. Who'd have ever thought I'd be getting braces?

I use an electric toothbrush, and both my ortho and dentist said it would be fine on the braces. I made sure mine had soft bristles and I don't press too hard.

Good luck on Friday, I'll be thinking of you!

Bracesweden - now fully braced

#28 Post by bracesweden »

Finally I am fully braced - uppers and lowers :jump: ! I must say the lowers are already making their presence felt :( Teeth are quite sore and the upper braces have started to chafe :( :( . On top of that I now have 7 spacers in all and they are also making their presence felt...all in all it feels as if I am in for a really painful weekend!! On top of that I start work in Monday...boohoo!!!

But on the brighter side the ortho said today that a couple of my upper teeth had already moved  !!! I for one don't see any movement, but hey she is the expert!!

Will post pics in the evening.....

Ciao for now!!

Bracesweden - PAINFUL first days in braces

#30 Post by bracesweden »

After behaving themselves extremely well for the first couple of days, my mouth and the bloody braces are definitely hell now!!! Cant eat anything - what eating...cant even drink a glass of water without grimacing. My teeth have become EXTREMELY sensitive and even luke warm water feels like acid!!

I now have to fill my mouth with wax as the insides of my lips feel like shredded ....something!!! :( I guess I am a big chicken. My lips (which anyway usually are big) are double the normal size...I really hope the swelling goes down as I have to go to work tomorrow...BOOHOO!!!

HELP! Does anyone know how long this will last? And all my teeth are not even anchored - only 5 uppers and 5 lowers...and I have 7 spacers. Just hope things settle down.

Anyone had to travel (like to another continent) shortly after being braced? I have to travel first week of sept and I am apprehensive about something going wrong....like a bracket popping or something. How long can one wait in case something like that happens? I dont want to go to a dentist in an emergency....

I guess I am just being a big whiny baby....its the new braces. I am sure before long I will be just my usual jovial self!!! :D

Any/all help and suggestions are welcome, so PLEASE help!!
