HELP PLEASE

#1 Post by Ems »

I got my impessions took last Wednesday and my dentist asked me to come back on wednesday 17th Sept to get my pictures took but on the Friday after getting my impressions took I noticed I had what I thought was a cold sore coming by the saturday my bottom lip had swallen right up and the sore got bigger on my lip, I was provided with antibiotics for my mouth and the swelling eventually went.

On the Monday morning I telephoned my dentist and explained that I had a "cold sore" on my lip and was on antibiotics so did they still want me to keep my appointment. After being put on hold she came back and said not to worry see how I feel and if am ok still come. This I thought was strange as if it is a cold sore it might spread onto the equipment and me.

Anyway on the Tuesday they changed my appointment from the afternoon until the morning on Wednesday. I explained that the "cold sore" was still on my lip and did they still want me to come. She said yes it will be fine.

On the morning of my appointment I received a call from the dentist saying the doctor has called in sick. I know this cant be helped but then she told me that they would have had to put things in my mouth to take the pictures I said I explained twice to the receptionist that I had a "cold sore" on my lip. She said it was best that I wasnt coming in.

She has given me an appointment for the 8th October and I am just wondering as they havent even taken my photos yet and are saying I should have my trays in by then. Is this right that they will take my pictures after I get my trays? Also when will I see my clincheck?

Sorry for going on about my mouth but I hope you can put my mind at ease. :?

Thanks Meryaten I appreciate your help in this matter. I will give them a call next week and see if am definately getting my trays on the 8th. I agree with you I think I should have my pictures took and see my clincheck before I start my treatment.

I was only made aware of this a few months ago when i read a poster on my dentists wall explaining not to come in if you have a cold sore. I guess they're just so contagious and i suppose may cause further complications with any dental treatment. It is "technically" an STD right?

I thought they would send the pictures along with the impressions to Invisalign to make the clincheck. How can they tell how the upper and lower teeth come together otherwise? And why didn't they just take the pictures the same day that you got the impressions? That's how they did it with me.

About the cold sores, like Meryaten said, I think they would use gloves and sterilize or discard anything that touched your mouth. The cold sores won't spread through the air like a flu. The virus that causes most cold sores is herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1). 50% of people in the USA have it by age 12. They get it from kissing relatives as children. Something like 90% of people carry the virus by age 50. Many people have it but don't get cold sores. There is a blood test that will tell if you have antibodies for HSV-1 indicating that you've been exposed and now carry the virus whether you have cold sores or not.

I would think your only concerns would be that pulling your lips apart for the pictures would be painful and if they took a regular smile picture you wouldn't want the cold sore in the picture. But I wouldn't worry too much about spreading it unless you are going to kiss the dentist or assistant.

Also, I'm not sure why you would be on antibiotics if it is a cold sore which is caused by a virus. There are other treatments you can use to shorten the healing time. There are also certain foods that are good for preventing cold sores, and some foods may bring one on.

PaulInc, it's a funny thing, if the virus is on your mouth and causes cold sores, then it's not considered an STD. But if someone gets it on their genitals, then it is considered an STD. It's just a stupid stigma that society has. And even though it's not curable, it's also not deadly, so it is not treated the same as other STDs like HIV.

That's what I am thinking too. The whole point of the pictures is to send to invisalign for when they make your trays and it's just a bonus that you can see your progress by looking at the before pictures.

Thank you for your replys but now am really worried. I was thinking the same. When i got my impressions took the dentist was eager to get me fitted in the following week for my pictures to be took but he was off sick the day i was suppose to go. When they re-arranged the girl said to come on the 8th oct and the trays should be back by then, do you think i should call them and say i thought i would get my pictures took before my trays come back as i want to see my clincheck before i start treatment?

To be honest tho i want to start it regardless of seeing them first but i want to do things the right way. Any suggestions?

I was prescribed antibiotics because i ended up getting an infection in my mouth and my whole bottom lip swelled right up. I think the reason i got the cold sores is ive been working loads and feel a bit stressed out so think that i why.

I never had a cold sore in my life until I went to my current dentist and im 47 yrs old! It makes me wonder. I work in a small surgery center and am responsible for all sterilization of instruments. EVERY denstist's office I have been in, I've seen breaks in not only sterile technique. but clean technique. It truly makes me cringe.

Just another thought....herpes simplex can be tranferred through oral sex. In my younger and crazy days....herpes was the STD we were all afraid of, it wasnt curable. Now, we worry about deadly stds.

Lilypad, there is a chance you could have had it most of your life but just got a cold sore after the dentist by coincidence. Maybe you aggravated the area and made the cold sore appear. On the other hand, the aligners and braces cause little cuts in the gums which would make it easier to get infected if you were exposed. It could be just from sharing a drink or something, not from the dentist. I'll have to observe at my next appointment to see if they touch any surfaces with their gloves before putting them in my mouth.

Hi again

Well i phoned my dentist up and questioned about my clincheck told her i was on this site and have been on the invisigline and said my pictures should go off with my moulds and then i should see my clincheck before i start treatment. She then changed her story and said oh no your only getting your pictures took on the 8th Oct. Its like they dont know what there doing. Its annoying me now and i havent even started my trays.

I want to know when am getting my trays as i have two jobs and my evening job is on the phones so i dont want to work the first few nights when i get them. :?

I cant cancel with them as my payment plan says you cant cancel so am stuck with them.

The only reason i dont want to work is that i have two jobs a 9-5pm one and then 5-10pm so i will be excusted and in pain so thats the only reason and its a good excuse not to do my evening job. :D
