First adjustment today - thanks to this board, I was somewhat prepared with what to expect. I have Damons, and a few of the doors were a little sticky, but overall that part wasn't bad. I got a new, thicker wire on top. On the bottom I not only got a new wire but also a twisted wire on my molars, and springs to close the gap from my pre-molar extractions. Now I'm glad I had the extractions, because I got prescription pain meds after I had the extractions done, and I'm taking them tonight! Yes, this hurts. It hurts to eat Spaghetti O's for goodness sake! I know this will pass, but I have to whine a little to all of you who know what I'm talking about. My husband has no sympathy for me.
Hubby got his Harley - 8/07
Started researching Orthos - 9/07
Lower Pre-molar extractions 8/6/08
Braced on 8/13/08 - 39 years old
Debraced on 12/6/2010 - 41 years old
Looking forward to the next 41+ years, this time with an improved smile!
I found that my first adjustment hurt just as much as when I was first braced. Luckily it didn't last for as many days. Hang in there!!! Glad to hear you have some meds
You have my sympathy! I had my first adjustment two weeks ago, and it hurt MORE than when I first had the braces put on.
I got my molar bands put on during the first adjustment, so in addition to the usual tooth pain, I had those bands tearing up my cheeks and irritating my gums. Ow. That week after the adjustment was the first time I had the "maybe getting braces was a big mistake" moment.
Hang in there Pisces, it took a week or two, but I feel fine now, and on the positive side, I have seen a heck of a lot of movement in my teeth.
That first wire change is a rough one! I remember going in thinking it would be no big deal... oh, just the thought of it makes me cringe. My Ortho's assistant and I still talk about that wire change whenever we hear that a wire change is part of the plan. We're both like "wire change? Are you sure?" It's kinda funny because neither of us want any part of that! (Though, as a side note I'm now in finishing wires so hopefully my wire changing days are over.)
Metal Braces: August 18, 2006-January 14, 2009
Essix-type Retainers: January 14, 2009--present
Thanks for the sympathy, I knew I could count on you guys! I'm already feeling much better & back to eating again. PuppySmiles, I have seen some movement, especially in the front / top, but it's only been 10 weeks so I have a ways to go. I expect to see a lot more movement with these springs on!

Ha, my first adjustment was like that too… it hurt to eat instant mashed potatoes! I have Damons too and the ortho did warn me that the first adjustment, when they put the heavier wire in, is a bad one. It will pass, I promise! You will also forget the pain when you see how fast your teeth are moving! Got braced July 15 and already I can see myself being out of these things faster than I imagined.
You guys weren't lying! I just had my first adjustment today and ahhhhh my teeth are throbbing. It sucks because I finally was eating semi normally, and not having much pain!
I'm already in rectangular wires, does that mean my teeth already moved a lot? Hope so!
In the mean time guess its back to ice cream for another two weeks... poor me.
Oh mylanta, this post is worrying me! I just got braced last week...it never hurt, but I just felt a lot of pressure. As you may have read in a previous post, I had all 4 wisdom teeth cut out 13 days before I got braced. I've never had pain like that before. I hope I'm one of the ones who has been through the worst already--but I have 9 more weeks until my first adjustment...plenty more time for y'all to convince me that it isn't as bad as it sounds I'm glad you're feeling better!
Braced (upper and lower): 10/29/08
Debraced: 3/17/10
Now sportin' a permanent bottom retainer
Alternate clear retainers every 12 hours
mmm, I had my first upper wire change today and, man, it hurts! When I left the ortho office it was just some pressure, now my teeth ache a lot
It is definitely worse than when I first got my braces put on. The wire then was thin, but today I got one of those thick rectangular wires and I can really tell the difference...
Whatever, some tylenol, soft food for a few days and keep going. No pain, no gain (I guess).
you know i find it funny that i went through some pretty major surgery (having had my palate removed) and got braced 2 weeks later and i can't even remember the pain now
i know it hurt at the time but the human mind has a wonderful way of forgetting pain
I remember going to my first adjustment thinking it couldn't possibly be as bad as getting them on. I was definitely wrong! The good news is that, for me anyways, those were the worst of my adjustments. They're more bearable now.
