My molars don't touch!

#1 Post by Des »

Hi, I got my braces on Monday and at first I thought that it's due to the fact that I can't chew that it feels as if my molars don't touch, but now that the pain's wearing off a bit it feels as if I can't chew my food fine enough. It's frustrating! Has anyone else experienced this?

This is a common problem. Due to my deep overbite, I had this issue as well when I got my braces put on two years ago. It took several days to get "used" to eating this way, but I remember the problem was corrected after about 4 weeks. In other words, my molars touched again after a month of treatment. Hang in there!

Same problem

I just got my braces five days ago - I have the same problem - my molars don't touch.

In my case, I think that it is the molar bands that are throwing my bite off on one side (they touched before I got my braces on).

Rather annoying when you try to chew.

I need to go back to the ortho next week to have her look at one of my brackets. I am going to ask her about it then.

Thank you so much to all of you who replied. This braces thing is more complicated than I expected.

Good luck to all of you! :P

since I got molar buildups, my molars -or the rest of my teeth, for that matter- have not met each other for five months. Now they are certainly closer, as the buildups have worn down but they still don't touch... and yes, it is uncomofrtable since it makes it hard to chew but -believe or not- you will get used to that and in a few weeks you will manage the technique.. or your teeth will move and your molars will touch again!

Same problem here. They've done that a few times since i started. But after a while they settle. You'll get used to chewing, it just takes time and patience. I'm currently in elastics to correct a crosbite at my left 1st molars, so I feel your pain, so to speak.

i just got build ups on my front four teeth today, and my molars dont touch at all. soon will have rubber bands to pull the molars together though. Im in a lot of pain, and suggestions with types of food? When I had molar build ups i found that the larger the bite of food was, the easier it was to chew into smaller pieces.

that's true: big stuff and stuff you can "melt" or swallow is way better than small or thin things like rice, lettuce, spaghetti and so on...However, I eat everything now and still have my molar buildups on

ear clogged

My molars dont touch either. Is it normal for this to cause some tension in the jaw or for the ears to feel clogged up? I am having these symptoms now and I am wondering if there is a connection.

I've also had this tension in the jaw... I guess it is normal, when your bite is moving all the time the joints suffer a little bit. But since it is moving towards the right position, it will get better

I would mention this at your next appointment. Although I have heard that a few jaw joint symptoms are common, it's something you should probably discuss with your doctor, when you get the chance.

My molars don't touch either. Reason being that they had to put these two... things behind my two front teeth because they were hitting braces of my bottom teeth when I bit down.

I'm on day three and my molars do not touch either (adult here). HOWEVER, they did put rubber "bumpers" so that my top teeth are not hitting the brackets; rather, they now "clamp" down on rubber. It's very similiar to a shock absorber...you should check into it!

so.. i have rubber bands now, and i still have molar build ups which weren't hitting at all due to the build up behind my front teeth.. but now they are hitting due to the rubber bands. Idk, something just doesn't seem right. It's like they're trying to pull my teeth together with rubber bands but failing miserabley because molar build ups are in the way. I almost think they forgot to take them out?!
