Christmas Soon

#1 Post by Ems »

Hi am just wondering am waiting for my trays to come in and with Christmas fast approaching and the parties are never ending can you drink with your trays in? I tend to drink Archers and Coke and i know it can stain your trays but will i have to take these out everytime i want to have a drink?

Sorry if this sounds silly but i just want to check.

Staining isn't what should be worrying you: it's soaking your teeth all evening in all that acid, which will soften and erode the enamel. And above all, don't brush right afterward - take out the trays and rinse with water, then pop them back in and wait at least a half hour before you brush.
Hi - I am new here.

Why wait half an hour to brush? I am on my 2nd set of trays & have been sneaking frozen coffee drinks through a straw (caffeine is a terrible addiction) but I brush as soon as I can after drinking them, thinking that was best.

Thanks so much!!

Because the acid in certain food and drink can soften the enamel and brushing can then damage the tooth.

I'd be interested to know how much actual damage would be caused by doing this. Is there any study/report that we can look at?

I guess you want to give your teeth 30 minutes to remineralize from your saliva before brushing. I doubt the enamel actually gets soft. The enamel is hard but porous. The pores are filled with minerals that make the teeth less brittle. If the minerals come out of the pores by the surface then you can wear down the top layer of enamel. You would have to do this repeatedly over time to make a noticeable difference.
