My boyfriend is having both jaws moved to correct his underbite on December 17th.

I've started my ortho and orthognatic journey. I had separators put in by the OD yesterday. These things are annoying! It's like having a giant hunk of meat between your teeth and you can't get it out....

I'm back next tuesday for impressions and to fit the bands for the RPE and then back a week later to have the RPE and brackets installed. I was not very excited when my OD said I would have to turn the RPE 4x a day for 10 days!!! You're gonna be able to drive a bus through the gap in my teeth - or as the OD said, a 'short bus'!!!!

I'm having SAPRE surgery 12/19.

I can't believe I'm actually gonna do it, particularly given that it's gonna cost over $10,000 and exactly ZERO is covered by insurance...doh!

Had lower jaw and genio on Monday. Doing well 48 hours later! Good luck to all!

I had upper jaw surgery Tuesday morning, and i'm alive and doing pretty well. My biggest worry was the actual surgery... I tend to worry about things involving myself that I'm not in control of. The surgery went well, and im two days post-op... I've got rubber bands in, and im eating and drinking plenty of liquids and soft foods(applesause, jello, mashed potaters) I'd say the worst part was the first day when I got sick a bunch, and had a lot of trouble sleeping due to being really congested. The pain isn't bad at all, but the hunger is... what I'd do to eat a gigantic burger right now... mmm. Watching the Food network isn't helping either. I still have some swelling but it really isn't too bad. This surgery wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. I'm still pretty worn out but other than that things are well!

Just want to say thanks to all you guys and this message board for all the information and support I needed before the surgery... it's all been great! Thanks!

Hey had my surgery tuesday morning too! Having a pretty similar recovery to you. Not too much pain just annoyed with being uncomfortable.

you are so right about those pizza commercials, i would kill for a papa john's pizza right now.

I'm eating my mash potatoes and soup and my carnation instant breakfast. I hope hubby will pick me up some kraft mac and cheese tonight

I'm eating better than I thought I would be able to. I doubt I'll be losing much weight....

When I was post-op, I was delighted to note the wide variety of pastas and sauces available in grocery stores. Gnocchi are really easy to eat, and even in the early stages of returning to chewing, pasta itself is not too difficult, especially if you overcook it just very slightly. Avoid tomato-based sauces until your incisions have healed over (they can sting a bit due to the acidity) but otherwise you've got a lot of options. I even enjoyed some types of ravioli or tortellini with nothing but a little melted butter (or some flax seed oil) and some shredded parmesan. Of course, the creamy or cheesy sauces pack some great calories if you are having trouble keeping weight on.

mmm you are making me think that pierogies are something I should try soon. they are nice and soft with some butter.

I had BSSO 6mm on one side and 8mm on the other, and genio to move my chin back 3mm on Dec 4th. Not doing too bad 9 days later, not taking any painkillers at all since day 7

So today was the day for my SAPRE surgery. I arrived at the OS at 8:00 am, and after forking over $3,700.00 and signing the 'i won't sue you' disclaimer, i was led in to one of the surgical suites.

It was quite the efficient process - in a just a few minutes a team of nurses had me on oxygen, they had a BP cup slapped on my, the IV was in and I was draped all over with surgical sheets. The one unexpected thing was the betadine paint job I got all over my face before the surgery - good thing I guess.

I was given IV sedation for the SARPE, which I guess took about an hour to complete. I have hazy memories of even talking to them during the procedure - kinda nutty! Not sure if it was in the middle or when I was coming out of the surgery, but I remember talking to them.

I've been home on the couch now for about 3 1/2 hours, and overall, it hasn't been that bad. The OS recommended a carbonated drink followed by a milk shake (I was cool with that - I love me a strawberry milkshake!) before taking any pain meds. About an hour after I got home I took my first Vicodin and have had a 600 mg Ibuprofin as well, and while I have a little dull pain in my jaw, I think it's likely more from them yanking stuff around to do the surgery than a result of the SAPRE procedure itself.

I have to say I'm glad it's over and I'm looking forward to my next dose of Vicodin - I think I'll double up - and getting some sleep.
