How are things? Is your back better? What about the de-banding date - still just after Christmas? Too many questions... Anyway, hope you had plenty of fun in nyc before you did your back...
I enjoy my braces, too, (why not, it is an experience and I find I like the bravery of not caring what people think) but I'm sure it will be good to think of surprising people with the braceless face..
Oh, I had a bit of less fun th'other day when I saw what take-away curry does to power chains! Didn't feel so brave then!

Jill: Are you still on 3 week cyles, I wonder? Have a feeling we were braced around the same time (mine was April 8th) and I wonder how all's going with you now...

Ken: wonder about you, too. How are the cars?

All the best for turkey and Christmas pud around the wires (or are those just British fare, I have no idea..)

Well, having just posted 2wice by mistake (thought I'd got past that silly one, especially since been doing a bit of online teaching, but there you go).. thought I'd correct with a little more...

Jill: I realize I'm only up to my sixth adjustment - no where near where you must be with your 3 week cycle (what with visits to the hygienist every 3 months, the dentist every 6 and the periodontist every year I was sure I'd seen the ortho more often..)

Ken and Athy: Isn't the world depressing right now - money, job situation, fuel prices, as well as worries about the environment (maybe that's not the most worrying thing at present). The economy is so bad here, and lots of anxiety about jobs etc., Shops are closing, too, esp., Woolworths - a favourite from way back in my childhood.... SO we just have to keep smiling our big brace faces I reckon!

Yes, I'm still on a three week cycle. I must have had 9 or 10 adjustments now. I rather like it as it makes me feel that we are speeding things along, although I don't know if that's true.

This last time, I had a tooth that was moving way out of where it should, but since I only had a short time to go to my next adjustment, I didn't have to worry too much. My orhto's response was that if it can move out that fast, it can move back that fast too. And it has!

Not much needs to be done to my top arch. We're waiting on the bottom front teeth to rotate, and now they seem to be moving. I had a slow patch for a while which was rather frustrating, but now I'm optimistic again.

I was able to find some mince pies over here to have a bit of a British Christmas. I never really liked Christmas pudding except when my Mum used to hide shilling pieces or sixpenny bits in it. Now that dates me, doesn't it!!!

Hope all is well with you too. I wish I were up to photos, but my technical skills are rather limited. Look forward to hearing from everyone else.

I am 55 and have been dealing with TMJ and splits for 17 years and 4 dentists. Finally have my pain in control with lower splint during the day and upper splint at night. Next week I begin the 2nd phase of treatment.....braces.

I already talk funny with the splint and am used to dealing with brushing very frequently.

I am glad to find this site and look to you 50+ folks to help me along the way.

Hi everyone!
It has been a long time since I've posted, but I wanted you to know that I am seeing great progress with my teeth. I have had the braces on one year now, and my teeth are so straight, with the exception of one bottom front which a coil is making room for. One unexpected bonus is that the outward movement of my teeth is giving me lips again! I write to let those over 50's know that it is totally worth it! I've even stopped having so many painful spots on the inside of my cheeks. There was a time a few months ago that I daydreamed about telling my orthodontist to take those brackets off, that I was done with them. And this is for Jill 52-- my new most time consuming hobby has become just a part of my routine!

I am 58 and had my braces put on yesterday. Of course I am not use to the foreign objects in my mouth and the discomfort I felt when I brushed my teeth this am, but I know it will be worth it in the long run.

Welcome. I am also hoping to clear up some TMJ with these braces. I haven't had a very clear prognosis on that, just that is will probably help. But getting straight teeth too is also part of my reason for doing it. So are you braced now? Good luck with that. Let us know how the first weeks go - that's the hardest time.

Thanks for all your upbeat comments and encouragement. It's a long process isn't it. Sometimes I wonder what I'm doing! I have decided to have my braces temporarily removed this summer for a long trip to Europe. I know it will set me back time wise, but I want to be brace free to enjoy the trip. How is your journey going?

Welcome! And good luck with the journey. The early days are the hardest. At least they were for me. There's lots to learn, and a lot of "firsts", like eating in public places, meeting friends. You will find lots of support and encouragement here as well as lots of information. All the best,

I will be 56 soon and just started the braces process. I plan to have fun with this. My husband thinks my braces are cute. Lots of people don't seem to notice them.

Great to hear from you and so glad you are still enjoying your braces - I actually really like mine, too, and wonder if I will be dissapointed when they eventually come off!

I've been to India, too, 'bout 4 years ago, and it was amazing... I want to see Slumdog Millionaire, too... apparently here in the UK sales of cinema and theatre tickets are going up, despite the recession - 'spose people want to cheer themselves up...

Just thought i would post again as I haven't for such a while..
It is great to have a group of 'older' braced people here - braces on adults of any age are a rare sight here in the uk...

SusieR and DebbieI: Good luck with your braces journey (ies)! It is such a worthwhile thing to do, and braces so soon get to feel natural..

HHB: It was really good to hear of your progress. How long till you get debanded? Any pics?

Jill52: Good to hear from you again. How are your teeth coming on? I think we got our braces at about the same time? In Jan I had a sliver cut off my front teeth to bring them together with less of a 'black triangle' (there's still a bit, though). Nothing else exciting except got a huge lump inside my cheek the other week - had to keep unhooking my wire from it - that was unexpected after all this time and I sure was glad I'd still got wax... All is fine now...

Howdy all,

Well I just finally broke down and got braces at 51 (I know, I don't quite qualify for "late 50s," but I'll be there soon enough.).

I just had them put on March 12, 2009, so I'm still trying to figure it all out. My doc used the small metal brackets; he felt that would be the quickest and most effective treatment plan given my specific situation. So far it's going OK, but one side of my tongue is really getting chewed/sliced up by the interior side of the bands. I'll probably go in next week and have them check it out (or I could get out the Dremel and give it a go myself...hehe).

I'm curious how many "old guys" get their teeth done. I see a few (Ken, etc.), but the majority seem to be women. It was a big decision for me, and I still worry about the cosmetics and perception (I have a mgmt position and interface with employees and customers frequently). I guess I'll get over it, but it's still somewhat embarrassing....

Anyway, I'm looking forward to learning from you guys!

Yea, there are more of us females here..
Anyway, know what you mean about embarrassing. If you click on www below here you can see how embarrassed I was at first! But you just get used to the braces and then it is fine. Also, I've found that nobody notices braces, they are just not a big deal. I have to talk a lot in my job so after lunch I do try to make sure there isn't any food stuck between the wires - that would look kinda careless!
