post-wire change pain: how long?

#1 Post by jxds »

Just to ask how long does normally your post-wire change soreness usually last? I got my top wire changed yesterday and today I am feeling more pain than yesterday. I can't hardly chew or bite into anything, and it's probably worse than when I first got braced. I wonder if this is normal, and how long will I have to stick to the mashed potatoes and soup kind of diet... :P

I just keep repeating to myself that at the end everything will be worth it, but sometimes this whole braces thing is just so difficult to handle...

Everyone is different, but for me I'd say I usually have about 36 to 48 hours where my teeth hurt enough to require Advil and to adjust my diet. After that period my teeth are still a little sore for a few days to a week, but I eat normally by cutting things up and chewing slowly.

Quite normal.

Always remember that pain = movement. So if your feeling tenderness it's a good sign somethings going on!!

Each time I got a new wire my teeth hurt for 1-2 days. Funny thing though my teeth always feel tender 2-3 days before an adjustment lol.

My teeth usually hurt for 1 to 3 days at the most. My advice is take an OTC and be patient. Yes my teeth sometimes hurt a week to a few days before an adjustment. Weird.

Mine are normally max 3 days after they start hurting (either after adjustment or mid way through when they move a lot). However, when I had my first rectangular/square wire on, which is also the first time I had elastics, I was in agony for 5 days.

They upgraded my wire on my first adjustment, and i never felt any pain for 2 weeks. After that, i'd feel tenderness in a couple teeth at a time, and the pain would rotate. Like for a week my 2 front teeth would hurt, then it would go to other teeth then a week later my 2 front teeth would hurt again and it would keep on cycling.

Mine usually hurt the day after, for 2-3 days until it's back to normal. This time though, it hurt within 2 hours and the most solid food I've been able to chew has been dinner tonight...my friend and his wife invited me over for dinner and she makes the most TENDER roast ever. I didn't even have to chew it. That being said, my teeth are still really sore!

Also, usually a few days before my nex adjustment my teeth will start moving again - to the point I can FEEL them moving. It's a feeling I can only describe as 'creepy'. Then of course they're sore again haha.

Thank you, guys! I feel less lonely now! It's been almost 72h and I'm still in pain, though advil definitely helps and it is getting better... Yesterday I managed to eat pasta (somewhat overcooked, though!). It is the third different wire on top, and by far it has been the worst so far! Anyway, I fell considerably less miserable today and not regret getting braces anymore ;)

Mine too, LOL! It's like my teeth can sense it's time :D

As far as after a wire change, for me it's usually 3-4 days that it is bothersome.

when i had the metal wires the pain usually lasted for 24 hours after the wires were changed. Since i've gotten the stainless steel surgical wires the pain seems to last a bit longer 48 hours to 72 hours but advil helps, i tried to stick with tylenol and traumeel (naturalpathic painkiller) and just have the advil at night time so i'd have a good sleep. glad to hear you are starting to feel better. This time around its seemed to hurt even more but that is probably due to the fact i got 4 surgical ties on, ah well, it feels better today, still sensitive to bite down on things (kinda feels a bit weird)
