impacted canine ? how many years in braces?
Hi
I am 26 and a half years old, i want to get braces, is it too old?
i have an impacted canine, and i would like to ask those who got a similar case, how many years should i expect to get my braces off?
other than this impacted canine my teeth are generally good..
but hopefully they will be better after braces,
i have my first appointment next moth, and i cant wait to know how many years to expect to get them off?
thank you

most case's are 18 to 24 months ,but agian some are longer like 18 to 36 months , long roots an very deep overbites an impacted teeth tend to take longer but not allways , i would see two or three ortho's to get the best one's treatment plan

It mostly depends on how cooperative your canine is going to be ( that is assuming you are going to have it exposed and pulled down into place). I have read some cases, even here on AW, where the canine just didn't want to move which really prolonged treatment. I think you are going to get a much more clearer time estimate after having been in treatment a couple of months.
If you use the search bar you may find similar cases to yourself there are MANY people on, or have been on, here with impacted canines. There is even a post entitled " The Impacted Canine Club," or something to that effect.
I had two impacted canines and they are a pain!
I don't believe you are too old to have that canine brought down but only your ortho can tell you the condition of the tooth.
Good Luck with your appointment.

I'm having treatment for that and have been quoted 18-24 months, and a year in am pretty much on track. I think much depends on the position of the tooth and also the skill of the ortho.
As I had heard that treatment can go on a bit, I opted for linguals on top, there is no visible braces on top and my teeth look straight, so I'm not self concious about my smile and treatment time is less of an issue for me. I would really recommend going for lots of consultations, and pay more / travel more / do whatever it takes to get someone who will use a type of brace you are happy with, in case treatment goes on a bit.
As well as what kind of braces, you might want to consider if you want a temporary tooth in the gap whilst you are waiting for the tooth to grow in, as I am missing lateral insciors (tooth in front of the canine), this was very important to me. For me having a large gap that I was self concious of would have defeated the purpose of cosmetic braces. Having an ortho who treats mostly adults was a real plus for this, there was no expectation of me going round without teeth, whereas others I consulted who treated mainly children, really couldn't understand why this would be an issue for me, even though they were quick to push cosmetic appliances!
My ortho is very into new techniques to get things moving efficiently, I'm convinced this has reduced treatment time, the lingual system (IBraces / Incognito) I have has computer aided design wires, to move things efficiently, a bit like the Sure Smile system for tradtional braces. These wires advertise that they significantly reduces treatment times in many cases, so this might be something you could consider.
Often orthos will ask you to wait some time between removal of milk tooth and exposure to see if the tooth will grow in by itself, which makes sense as you could avoid surgery. However, if you end up waiting a long time, say a year or more, in braces before starting work on the impacted tooth this is likely increase treatment time. I waited 6 months, as things were moving a bit without exposure. I would definitely recommend discussing this at an initial consultation.
Good luck!

Hi!
I'm 20, will be 21 soon and have been in metal braces for almost a year now. I had an impacted upper canine and I'm happy to say that it has already grown in! My ortho created a space for it using springs and luckily for me, the tooth came right on down! My ortho put a bracket on it as soon as it had grown in enough and now it looks normal. I know that everyone's treatment plan is different and I can't say for sure the steps your ortho will take, but I just wanted to report that I had a similar case, am not much younger than you and that my tooth grew in pretty quickly and without complicatons! My overall treatment time is estimated to be 2.5-3 years but I have more to fix than just my canine.
Anyway, good luck with your braces and I promise you won't regret it!

i'm in a very similar situation. i am 20 and i am now confronting the idea of getting braces. it is not an idea that i particularly like, because i'm pretty insecure and this is probably going to take a blow to my self-image and luck with girls, but i have an impacted canine that i want to get rid of finally.
i have a baby tooth, with the canine grown in right above it. the plan is to remove the baby tooth and (probably) get braces to bring down the adult tooth. until it comes down, the idea is that i'm going to walk around with braces and a missing tooth. great. this idea upsets me very much... i don't want to look/feel like a freak.
to kddblue who is fixing their canines, congrats. i wish i could be as strong/brave as you!

I'm in a similar situation, except in my case it's a bottom pre-molar that decided to just come out halfway in the middle of my treatment! Very frustrating. So we're in the process of opening up a space for that tooth (with springs) and just waiting for the tooth itself to come out enough.kddblue wrote:Hi!I'm 20, will be 21 soon and have been in metal braces for almost a year now. HOWEVER, the tooth is taking what seems forever to me. It's barely moving. It's been 6 months and there's barely enough room to put a bracket on it. Like you, I'm also 20 years old, so it's strange that it's moving along so slowly.

How long did it take for your tooth to come out? And how quickly did it move into place once the bracket was put on it?

I had an impacted canine. My estimated treatment time was 24-30 and it's ending up to be about 27 (three more days!!!)
My page posts a little more information about my experience. In short, the tooth never came down, the baby was still there. I had an exposure, which was successful.
Having the impacted canine definitely made treatment time longer, because a lot of time was spent waiting for the space to open and then slowly moving into place. However, as I mentioned before, my estimated time would have been 2.5 yrs at most.
Good luck with it!

Re: impacted canine ? how many years in braces?
Hey all.
I am not exactly in the same situation because I am only 15 and a half turning 16 in June. So I am still more or less a kid.
I dont know exactly how your tooth is growing, but mine(the impacted one) is growing from behind the other teeth which technically means I will be getting braces later to straighten it...
I had my baby tooth removed last August, and for the past 8 months it has been erupting with the help of a "magical" removal plate(not braces) ,a device that has a tooth on it but it is a plastic and its base pushes on the gum with the tooth(i know it is unclear but i just cant explain it because my first doctor was the one who did it and the other 2 never saw it before.) So no one even noticed me without a tooth!
But now, once it is out, i need to remove! this device and walk with no tooth .I am 16 ... but I dont really care because it now needs time(maybe a year or so) to grow naturally.
The doctor told me that i could do the surgery by extracting the canine and getting it out with braces which a really secure way but I dont like them. I prefer walking without a tooth.. which isnt cool when you are a teen in school..
Anyways good luck and I think even if it will take some time( I read at a website approx. 17 months) ,it is always worth fighting for.

Re: impacted canine ? how many years in braces?
I have been told by both my current orthodontist and oral surgeon that I am a very rare case.
I originally got braces in September 2008 with in orthodontist who I believe did not know what he was doing. 4 exposures later, I finally left his office this past October/November. I now have a new orthodontist who I absolutely love and have been told about 2 more years until I will have my brace removed. I am also supposed to be having my 5th exposure sometime this summer. So after everything is said and done, I will have had braces for about 6 years when I was told originally by my first orthodontist 18 months.
Hopefully you have better luck than me!
