keep in mind that you may come out looking much worse after the surgery than before, which is what happened ot me when i got a genioplasty, although i had it completely reversed...but not all surgeries are reversible. i couldnt beleive how bad i looked afterwards and how much i thought i needed a change when afterwards, i realized that i didnt. its a lot to go thru and it may not be worth it.

I know what you mean. My MAIN reason is not functionality (?) its my looks. i have such a badn underbite it's not even funny. Of course my jaw gives me headaches and I am wearing my teeth down, and all that jazz, but really I am most excited about the changes that my face will have. I wont have to hide my smile in pictures.

And most people get braces because they hate the way their teeth not becuase they are wearing them down.

People get surgery all the time to make themselves feel and look better. What's the difference between getting braces, boob job and jaw surgery. I mean I know that braces are no big thing like surgery but still. People are always doing things for their looks.

Plus if you rad through posts everyone is excited to see what they look like.

However, now(at 20 years old), I am discontent with my bottom jaw and feel like it can be pushed forward some more. My orthodontist said my bite was fine and is not severe enough for him to suggest the surgery. He did suggest a genioplasty though, but I'd rather undergo jaw surgery.

Please share with me your experiences as I would greatly appreciate it :)

make an appointment with a surgeon, the surgeon is the boss, not the ortho. good orthos know that.

^^^ must echo that sentiment, do not trust your ortho; in fact my ortho never brought to my attention I needed oral surgery, my dentist adivsed that I research it. I later found out that my ortho didn't really believe in surgery; well he said he recommends it when it is a very severe problem, but is very 'anti-surgery' and would never want his kids taking that risk if it wasn't absolutely necessary.

Anyway I share a LOT of the same self-image issues you do, and can totally relate. What's worse, is I'm 23 yo, turning 24 in september. I also feel my social life is totally hampered by my insecurities. I on the other hand have quite an assortment of issues, including my bite that are messed up. My speech is hampered, I have a slight lisp because of my open/over/cross bite I presume. But as sad as it sounds, if it were up to me, I'd stay inside or away from ppl I know, until surgery is done, which is more than a year away! :( To be a guy with a weak chin, unable to close my mouth, too much teeth, and long jaws, and braces now in my mouth making my mouth look even more "immature", it's really frustrating. I have ZERO confidence, and I actually think I'm a fairly good looking guy outside of my mouth issues. This journey will be a long one, but well worth it I really hope in the end.

Anyway, just wanted to share that you're not alone, and I'm betting there are lots of ppl over 20 that battle the same insecurities. Do what's in your heart and if that means fixing the problem, go for it (if you have the funds). But please go see an oral surgeon to be properly assessed!

if you believe you need jaw surgery, find out the best surgeons in the area, then have them recomend you a ortho.... seems ass backwards but i just think you'll be a lot better off.
