Thanks for the comments and encouragement. I'm two weeks down, and I'm finally acclimating to this mess of metal in my mouth. I can't wait to begin seeing some positive signs...that will be encouraging!
How about braces in late 50s?

Athy, how great to be nearly brace-free!! You must be counting the days! Wonder if yr mouth will feel empty without all the metalwork, tho? I kinda do feel it's like strange jewellery, so spose I'd have to buy some more rings or bangles etc., to make up...
Today is a strange day for me as it is 1 year since braces went on! Also, a sad day for brace progress as the gap between my front teeth has opened up. I've written all about this on my story (see www). Anyway, it's 2 weeks since my last adjustment, when my front teeth were together.. My ortho's gone on holiday, but she's arranged for my dentist to put a new powerchain on tomorrow. It will be SOOOO good to get those teeth together again - tis stupidly sad to fell sad going backwards in all this...

Got my top braces 4/2/09, just a couple months after my 58th birthday. Been fighting it for years, but have capitulated to spare what's left of my crowns and gums.
It's not so bad. Not as painful as I expected. More a nuisance than anything. Two forks full of food and I feel like the Hanging Gardens of Babylon are sprouting forth. Not so, of course, but it sure feels like it!
Must say my teeth have never been cleaner as I'm brushing/flossing obsessively.
Good to know I'm not alone on this path. Have already gleaned a lot of really useful info from this site preparatory to making the leap. Hope to be able to give back along the journey.

Hi Athy, it sounds as though we might be debraced around the same time. I'm really bored with my braces now and trying not to get my hopes up, as I know it is hard for the ortho to predict exactly when. But he assured me last time that August was very, very doable. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, especially as I'm hoping to go and work overseas.

The power chain goes on and gaps open up between the side teeth, the power chain comes off and gaps open up between the front teeth. And backwards and forwards we go! I sympathise. I hope you have it sorted out by now and that things are progressing again.

I'm new to this forum. I'm 54 and got braces on just five days ago. I had them when I was 16 and my teeth shifted back to an overbite. I've been self concious for years and decided this was it, I was getting them. First few days were rough but today is much better. So glad to find this forum as I feel a little alone in all of this.

I didn't realize there were plenty of over 50 people here! I am very nervous...tomorrow is the big day. I should be planning a last meal of crunchy food but seems like no time!
What essentials to I need before tomorrow? Will I feel like showing my face to work the next day? I haven't told anyone except two family members.
I am scared, making right choice or not. No one can decide this for me, I guess?

It's great hearing your story! I'm really encouraged reading about older adults putting their hangups about age aside and seeking orthodontic treatment later in life. Many of us have issues with our teeth that we've been living with for many years. Why not fix them once and for all! Even though I had braces when I was younger, apparently (at 53) I need them again. I have an appointment with an orthodontist next week for my first consultation. I'm really looking forward to it!

I've been trying to get a thread going for people over 50 (whatever) undergoing braces treatment. Except for gray hair matching metal braces, I'm wondering if there are any concerns I need to know that coincides with my age. (I wish there was a senior discount.)
I started with a year in a mouth splint, surgery to reposition my TMJ discs, then another year in a splint to heal. I started ortho Nov. 11, 2009, to give me a bite I can live with without harming my reseated TMJ discs.
We're part of a generation that will probably keep their teeth until we die. Previous generations could count on losing all their teeth and wearing dentures. That generation was pre-fluoride and didn't floss.
Any comments?

It's comforting to hear positive stories of others 50 and up with braces. I am looking forward to having a "movie star smile". I fully intend to get the loudest ligitures available. Maybe red & black for my youth karate students. Yes I am a 2nd degree black belt and teach karate. I was initially concerned about my karate training with the braces but with a mouth guard all will be fine as long as I can get self control in the minds of my younger students (5-10 year olds).
