Got IA

#362 Post by luckylou »

Hi guys

Got inman in now and it's the weirdest experience. Was so used to the expander sitting behind my teeth and the IA is now so far forwards I can't properly sit my top lip over it. Does this improve with time, do the teeth move backwards? It's also very painful. but.... my speech is totally fine. i think the expander practice helped millions.

The first day I had mine-I felt like it was huge at the front and that my lip was really pushed out but you get used to it really quickly.

Good luck with it. If you have any questions let us know. I'm finished with mine now and really happy with the results!!

Hi All,

Just thought I'd share my recent experience when I visited the airport last week.

I told the check in desk assistant where I was going and she looked at my mouth and said, " oh it must be really bad having that in your mouth?" I just stared at her in disbelief, and said sorry? And she repeated it! She said, " having that brace in your mouth, must be awful."

Cheek! Has anyone else come across anything like this? I was really annoyed about it. Up until now I had managed not to get any negative comments, but I was so shocked!

You should have replied, 'in 3 months time I'll have beautiful straight teeth but your face will still be that way'

Although, you might not have been allowed on the flight!!

Cheeky cow!

Hi Irishbrace, was just wondering if you got the permanent wire behind your teeth after the Inman was finished with. If so, what is it like to wear - any good and bad points? Am thinking of getting this instead of the retainer.

Well, I had my inman fitted yesterday... and I'm not quite sure how i'm feeling about it! It is very, very painful! More so than i expected!! I thought my front teeth may hurt, but the back teeth that it hooks onto also really hurt!
My speech is bad too.. especially when saying 'D' sounds!! They come out as a whistle! I think this is due to the expander part that is siting over my pallet. I'm afraid to say that after lisping and slurping my way through the first hour at work i took it out and have just put it back in now i've finished. I'm hoping my speech will get better so i can wear it at work, but i have this horrible feeling that it won't!
Anyone who's got/had the expander part on their's got any advice or words of wisdom??
Thanks! R x

Hi Rach

Hang on in there because things do get better!

Ive had my aligner for 8 weeks now and at the beginning I couldnt believe how much my back teeth hurt as I was expecting just the front ones to be sore. However after about 3 weeks the pain in the back teeth disappeared and although my front ones are still tender the pain is so much less than at the beginning :P

As for the speech - well even after all this time my speech is still pretty awful although I think everyone at work has got used to it now (well they don't laugh as much as they did at the beginning - although one of my colleagues got me to say "supercalafragalisticexpalidocious" last week which resulted in much hysteria!

Just stick with it - my teeth have moved so much that the discomfort and awful speech have been worth it - and although its tempting to take it out I have tried to wear mine as much as possible so that the teeth will move quicker.

Good luck!

I am probably one of the older posters here. Having decided to have a complete mouth makeover recently I have done enormous legwork both in the UK and in Ireland looking at options.

I am about to be fitted with the IA in about 3 weeks and this forum has been invaluable in answering all if the questions that I have.

I have to say that I am really looking forward to finally getting that smile that I have always wanted. The IA is just one part of the whole experience that I am having done. While my dentist has said that my upper teeth (which really protrude) are suitable my lower teeth which have gaps and protrude also are not suitable and might be more suitable for veneers.

I have to ask... how is the pain when the IA goes on? I sleep little as it is and had a denture before that I could not leave in due to pressure on teeth. This is the one aspect of all of this that worries me. I can cope with everything else the lisps, metal on side of mouth etc. but sleep for me is a necessity that I cannot do without.

If anyone can advise me on this I would be eternally grateful.

IA in for 6 weeks now!

#371 Post by pompom »

Hello all,

I like many have been a silent reader for a while, everyone’s questions and stories of success have been so helpful so thank you!

This is my IA story!!

About 2-3 months ago I went to 3 cosmetic dentists in london asking about having veneers on my top teeth, 2 of them I ran a mile from but the third one (londonsmile clinic) was just perfect! My dentist recommended that I got an IA as the teeth either side of my two front teeth were quite rotated (I hated my profile when I smiled, one of the MANY reasons why I hate my teeth), the IA would make them straight and perfect for the application of veneers. Without the IA he would have had to shave my teeth down to ‘pegs’ and build my teeth back up using a lot more porcelain so that the veneers sat straight, basically a lot more fake teeth rather than just a fake ‘shell’. So, a slightly different story to most as essentially I am getting them shaved to have veneers put in either way, but the peace of mind that my teeth haven’t been shaved down to almost non existence was worth the money to me!

I will have had the IA in for 6 weeks tomorrow and I am practically done with my treatment thank god!! my dentist is taking a mould on Friday for the see-through gum shield thing (I guess sort of like an invisalign) for me to wear for a month or so until I have the veneers fitted. I had the option of a wire, but not much point as he would only have to take it off to put the veneers in and then put a new one in again. My experience of IA has been absolutely fine, luckily I have been able to wear it at work as most colleagues are friends, everyone else has only ever made comments out of interest and have been perfectly nice, only the odd mocking of speech but that’s to be expected and only ever done in jest! I’ve probably been wearing it for about 21 hours a day in total, there have only been two occasions where I fell asleep without it in by accident! I was quite self conscious about walking around on my own (I work in central london) incase I had to talk to people I wasn’t expecting to talk to, and I did run into an old friend but I just say ‘sorry about the speech I have a brace!’. I took before pics so as soon as my treatment is done I will put them up, aswell as some pics of it in as I know any newbies to the forum will be interested to see it, as mentioned in a previous post there are no images on the net!!

Good luck to you all! x

Hi Toothless!! (love the name!)
I've only had the aligner for 3days now, but my advice if you are worried about pain when sleeping is to put it in at least a few hours before you go to bed. I am finding that it is super painful for about 45mins after i take it out or put it back in. The pain subsides gradually until it's ok (and sometimes even painless) after around an hour. I obviouly don't know how this will change in time though as i am a real newbie! If you are worried still about sleeping, have you tried 'nightol'? I work shifts and take it sometimes after night shifts and find it puts me into a slighter deeper sleep than usual, but i wake up feeling fine! Might be worth a try?

Hi all,

I read through all the posts and it's amazing all the stories I can relate to ( well the majority ) I got my IA fitted on the 20th of this month so 10 days already. The pain at the start was unreal, the pressure on my teeth, i couldnt eat or chew but i knew it would all be worth it ( hopefully ) then it started going through my mind was it worth it, would the pain ever go away. My speech was sluuuuuurrrrrrreeeedd haha everyone in work was like what is up with her but when i said that i got the brace everyone was great.

Now 10 days on it still hurt a tiny bit, I cant bite into anything yet ( too scared to try ) my speech is SO much better cause i'm wearing the IA 21-22 hours a day, you have to keep talking and wear it as much as you can it wont get better if you dont. But can i say that all your posts are so helpful and i was laughing through most of them cause i feel the same.

When i see and hear the final results it keeps me going and i cant wait to be there !! I have my next check up on the 10th Aug, not looking forward to the filing but sure no pain no gain as many have said above.

I'm in Ireland and am going to Richmond/ Molloy who seem to be really nice, altough he didnt give me much info to go on, i've been getting it through these forums.

I've lost a bit of weight already cause i'm not snacking, drinking tea ( i'd have 3 sugars in 1 tea ) i'm staying away from fry ups in the morning cuase i cant be bothered taking it out in the morning ( apart from brushing my teeth ) so i'm only having lunch and dinner, which is great cause i have a wedding to go to in Sept in NY so i need to look my best for that.

To all the people that are not wearing it through the day, i just think you have to try and it gets way better. Everyone in work can understand my i only have troouble with D's and J's so i choose my words. I cant wait to hear everyone elses experiences on this forum esp from people who have got it fitted around the same time as me.

It's hard to tell if it has moved much. One of my front teeth over laps the other and it a lil rotated and my left outdie tooth is a lil rotated also. I look at them every chance i get so i'm not noticing anything but a couple of people have said that they can see that it has moved.

One thing i am worried about is that, i have heard from the post before that the teeth move back really quickly if you leave it out too long? I think at the end of this i'm getting the permenent wire fitted to hold them in place?

I'd be really interested to hear from anyone that has gotten this fitted and how was it as although people have mentioned it above i hadnt read any stories, or if it's working or if a retainer would be better? I wasnt given a choice, the dentist just said that's what i was getting lol

Anyway keep smiling and i cant wait to hear from you all !! :D :D :D

Hi all

I've just had the inman aligner fitted this morning....not sure i like it at the moment, it feels huge and a lot more visible than i had expected although i am sure i will get used to it. I am having trouble talking too!

I have two questions - firstly, I've had little filling-type things put on my teeth to help keep the brace in place. I know other people have had this done too but my dentist has also put some on my back teeth too to create more room behind my teeth for the brace - as a result, my back teeth aren't meeting and i can't chew food properly! has anybody else had this done?

Also the reason i am having the brace is because i have a gap between my front teeth. i'm a bit worried that once this has been closed i will just have another gap further back. Has anybody else had a gap closed and if so, did it create another gap elsewhere?

Thanks in advance!

Progress report

#375 Post by mareikem »

Hey everyone, I havent posted in a while, I just wanted to give a quick progress report on my IA experience. Firstly I am absolutely AMAZED at the difference the aligner made. It's unreal!
I've had it fitted at the end of May and I'm just about to finish my treatment - my last visit will be on Thursday when the moulds for the retainer will be taken. I should say that I haven't been wearing it 22 hours religiously - at the beginning, the first couple of weeks I did, but then there was a bereavement in my family and I stopped wearing it during the day. I then figured out that it worked only wearing it before and after work, and during the night. In fact I found that between dentist visits my teeth would move into their new position very quickly, normally within a day or so, and any additional wearing didn't change much - just kept it in the position.

So, even now when I remove the aligner the teeth move slightly back again, whereas when the aligner is in the mouth they're perfectly straight. My dentist has assured me this is quite normal as they are slightly loose and the aligner presses them into position. The retainer will apparently do the rest and keep them there.

I'm very excited to be finishing my aligner experience so soon and I would whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone. I cannot believe that when I was a child my parents considered having me fitted with a fixed brace, how much discomfort would that have caused me compared to the aligner...
