Do you have a choice to be wired or not

I had a choice. My surgeon said if I got wired shut there was a 1% chance of nerve damage from Lefort 1 and IVRO surgery. However, if I chose a BSSO with Lefort 1 my mouth would stay open but the chance of nerve damage went up to 15%. I chose the safer route and got wired shut. There is also alot less swelling in my case too. I've been wired for 3 weeks and I'm not gonna lie, it sucks! I've lost 25 lbs, my speech is probrally about 75% normal but its still forced and my voice doesn't travel too well. Also a liquid diet is no fun, especially when yo have digestive problems with dairy products like I do. While I'm glad I got surgery to fix my Class III underbite, if I hadda do it over again I don't think I'd choose to get wired shut.
It may depend on what type of surgery you are having, but with BSSO and Lefort 1, you do have a choice. However, you must choose a surgeon who is comfortable with not doing the wiring. I ended up going out of state for mine, because the guy here would not consider doing it without wiring. I've been extremely happy with my decision! I had very few post op issues.
