Any pictures of IPR? Interproximal Reduction

#1 Post by AshJP »

Hi all,

Has anyone had this done and have any pictures to show? I have to have it done for my 6 month braces as opposed to extractions.

Is this the better route to go down over extractions?

Thannksssssssssssssssss :D

I had IPR done in April. (Have you ever seen a worse black triangle and terrible staining on the bottom teeth?!) It was painless and quick so nothing to worry about although I did get a soaking with all the water spray!

This is how things look now, 4 months later, so you can see it makes quite a difference. A good clean at the dentist also makes things look heaps better.

If you can do this instead of getting extractions and still get a good result then go for it. I had to have four extractions plus IPR (very small mouth).

I would never choose to lose a healthy tooth if I could avoid it. When I was looking for an ortho the first one wanted to extract a perfectly healthly lower front tooth - the one right next to the right midline tooth. That would mean my canine (insisor if it's on the bottom??) would have shifted over towards the middle of my lower bite - yuck! That didn't seem very asthetically pleasing to me. The second ortho told me she could save all my teeth but I would need IPR. I chose the ortho who suggested IPR, but I haven't begun tht phase of the ortho yet. She's making a lot of room for my bottom teeth, tho, with a coil spring which has given me amazing results, so hopefully the IPR won't be too extensive.

I had some IPR done last week. Two teeth were narrowed on my bottom jaw. I felt no pain and the teeth now look great. I will be getting more done on my upper teeth to resolve black triangles - my front two teeth are very triangular in shape and will look worse when they are straightened if they are not reshaped with IPR.

I really think that, like most things to do with orthodontics, it really comes down to trusting your ortho. I am extremely happy that this should be done instead of extractions.

I have just joined this site, so only just read this post. By now, you may have already had this procedure done, but thought I would describe my journey with IPR, for you and anyone else who is curious. I know I was terrified of this being done, and wanted to read as much about it as possible!

IPR- Interproximal Reduction - "teeth shaving" was no big deal really. Turns out my ortho does use the hand held motorized instrument, which looks like a dremel. It is basically like a very thin, sharp round disk which spins. He came in, there was water and a suction used with it, and he went to town on about 10 or 11 teeth, in between them. They take off a little in between all these teeth so it makes a little room for when the braces pull together. This was on my bottom jaw because they need to pull these in a little to keep my bite even when they pull my top teeth together. This procedure only took about 8 mins, and it was not as uncomfortable as I thought it was going to be. It did vibrate and you could feel it touch the gum which hurt a little, and then there was the cold from the water on the newly exposed sides of my teeth. The cold sensation really was the worst part, and not bad at all. My bottom teeth are rather narrow, and this made them even more so, but I know it will all look great in the end.
