On to Refinements

#1 Post by sunshinestate »

Hi Everyone! I finished my initial treatment (21 U/L) in June and was fitted for refinement trays. My bottom teeth still needed some work and my problem front tooth just had to be "brought in a little" (as my dentist put it). Anyway, I just got my trays a few days ago - 9 on top and 6 on the bottom. This initially seemed strange to me because I thought my bottom teeth needed much more work than my top teeth, but my dentist explained that she asked for an overcorrection on my top teeth just in case. She explained that if we determine that my top teeth become perfect prior to the 9th tray, I can stop treatment right then and there. It's nice to know, though, that I likely won't need a 2nd set of refinements.

As for what happens after these refinement trays, I'm supposed to wear my very last aligner full time for a period of 3 months, but she said that I could be liberal with the time I kept them in. That was music to my ears! After that, nightly retainer forever.

Just FYI - it took six weeks for the refinement trays to come in. I originally had a LOT of attachments during my initial treatment - three on top and five on the bottom. She took them off before taking the refinement impressions so as to give me a break from them prior to the new trays coming in. Luckily - I only need ONE top attachment now, which will be put on once I'm on tray 3. Right now I have completely smooth aligners and I have to say they really are basically invisible! I wish my entire treatment had been like this!

Good luck everyone!

Great news Sunshinestate. I am getting fitted for my upper refinements soon and I really hope that I only have one attachment. That would be a joy!

Good luck with them.
