Disturbing Discussions

I went away on vacation last week and when I got back immediately logged in. I was upset to read so many complaints about having extractions and the perceived negative effects on people's physical appearances. I had four extractions and now I'm freaked out that my face is going to collapse or something :( Is there anyone out there that had extractions and is pleased with their final result? When I joined this site I felt that there was a real supportive, positive vibe, but from what I read lately i feel like there is a lot of despair out there right now.

I didn't notice anything when I had extractions except how painless it was.

Nothing wrong with extractions when required :D maybe 99.99% of the time. Some complaints might be valid a lot are imaginery. People are people. If a hair is out of place "something must be wrong".

Don't let it get to you.

I had extractions and didn't notice any difference facial wise because of it and they didn't hurt a bit. So I am one of the pleased people, but it is a personal opinion. I needed my extractions - too many teeth in too small a jaw.

Caveat: The media tends to sensationalize for effect. However, the following does provide some food for thought - and does coincide with what some have experienced on this forum.

I've also noticed many concerns/complaints/problems regarding ortho treatments. It's making me more nervous than I already was! :?

I had 4 extractions and the only thing that changed is that my face looks slightly more contoured than it did previously.
I'm the owner/admin of this site. Had ceramic uppers, metal lowers ~3 years in my early 40's. Now in Hawley retainers at night!

I had three extractions, a lower central incisor, and two upper pre-molars. I am totally happy with the extractions, as the were non-negotiable for me, according to 3 ortho consults. I do have changes in my face, but all to the positive. The problem with me is that I have lost a considerable amount of weight during the 8 months that I have been braced (130 lbs. +), so I am unsure about whether the changes are due to the weight or the braces, probably a bit of both! My face has slimmed, but in a positive way. Whatever caused the changes, I am pleased with how I look now, and if given the chance, I would not change a thing!!!!!

Considering my options were extractions or SARPE if I wanted to combat my crowding, I was going to have facial changes either way. Besides, because of my deep, deep bite my face looked a little... round. It appears to be more oval now and I actually have cheek bones, so I don't really mind. The laugh lines around my mouth are a little deeper now, but I think that's because my teeth are being pulled back -- they were quite flared up top. I'm sure I'll notice more changes since my gaps haven't closed quite yet, but I haven't seen anything I'd call bad.

And I'd agree about the sensationalized part. Nobody is interested in watching a show about how great somebody's teeth look after extractions or SARPE or jaw surgery. They just want to hear about the people who feel they're worse off than when they started.

Thank you for all the positive responses. It's amazing how much of a difference it makes to have support from people going through the same process :)

I had read some of the recent extractions on the forum and was very nervous before I had mine done last Friday.
I am here to say mine went very well!
So far my face looks the same except for the braces. :( Not too crazy about them.

I am working on posting pictures and beginning my journal here.

Same as Snaggle Tooth ...

I had four extractions (overcrowding, had no choice) and everything seems fine.

My face has changed shape but that could be any one of a number of reasons from the extractions themselves to the fact that I have lost over 14 pounds (the most likely reason!!). And, besides, I now have cheekbones, so it can't all be bad!!

I had 4 premolars extracted and it didn't really change the shape of my face at all, as far as I can tell or I've been told. The ortho should be able to tell beforehand of the extractions will cause such a change and they should tell you (if they don't offer it - be sure to ask!).
First Ortho Consult: 6/12/08
4 premolars extracted: 11/4/08
Braced Upper & Lower w/TPA: 11/6/08
Debraced: 11/18/10

I had 4 teeth removed about 2 weeks after getting braces and thought that my face had changed with all that work... It didn't!! But I lost about 7 pounds over that month and that was making me look different! Now that I'm eating "normally" again, I think that it will sort itself out and I will get my round cheeks back!
