Etch burning mouth - help!
This morning I got my lower brackets on and my ortho was a bit slapdash and the etch all over my lips – it seemed fine when I left but now basically it seems like my mouth has been burnt! Layers of skin have come off and in the corner of my mouth has an ulcer come up. It’s really painful! I called my ortho but he said people don’t usually react like this and I should take some antihistamine. Will this work?? It looks awful and hurts quite a bit.
Thanks for any tips xx

That is quite odd. Etch normally does not burn. Youcan put it right on the tissue and nothing happens. the one exception can be etch for porcelain crowns.
You could try using some baking soda. It is a base that would neutralize acid. Just mix some in some water and swish it around getting it all on the area in question. It cant hurt and might help.
It is a strange situation though.
It could also be from the cheek retractors, cotton rolls, etc. instead of the etch. In fact that would make more sense but as I said above try the baking soda and see if it helps.

You may also just have irritated lips from the brackets and, as somebody else mentioned, the equipment. Many people here swear by lip balm and I try to put some on before appointments for adjustments as well.
Regarding the ulcer in the corner of your lips, I have had raw/rubbed corners of my mouth since my braces were put on. I think they rub against the brackets and my elastics. They generally don't hurt, but they look kind of gross sometimes.

In regards to the corners of the mouth believe it or not vagisil will work wonders there.

It could simply be your mouth reacting to the all the new foreign objects in it. Both times I have been bracketed my mouth and even tonsils were very irritated for several days (not just regular bracket irritation). It took around 4-5 days and a lot of ibuprofen but it calmed down. My ortho says that even swollen gums are common but I did not experience that. My son on the other hand experienced no irritation at all.

Thanks for the posts - it was definitely more than the usual sores and irritation - my skin was coming away in actual strips from my lips and inside my mouth. Ended up calling NHS Direct in the end because I was convinced I'd end up with a hole in my face They advised me to put milk on it which really helped neutralise it although standing in the office with milk running down my face was a particularly strange point in my week!
It seems to be all better now but will bring this up with my ortho when I see him again (he's on hols at the mo).
On the plus side, all fully braced now and can even see some movement on the upper left side!
