How do i convince myself to get this done
Moderator: bbsadmin
Hi folks just to update you i have rang the local orthodontcs today and booked me self a consultation for the 28th earliest i can get, got pay £30 up fron t tomorrow then an extra £120 on the 28th. I think from last time the treatment overall is about £3000 can any1 from england tell me how it cost them. Another thing all me mates are starting to get married and things now and are askin me go on stag dos next year but i wont be able afford it cus i need start saving now and i wont fancy goin with braces on anyway, oh well will just have tell them straight i suppose.
Get them!!! That's great that you booked the consultation! The anxiety before getting them is worse than when you have them. It's so easy to worry about what is will be like with them, and having them is not that bad! I'm a 23 year old female and I worried about the social situations, but it's no big deal!!! Besides, as a girl I think braces on a guy would be super attractive! It shows you care! Oh, and when I first got braces my guy friends teased me, but after about two weeks they ran out of stuff to say and now no one says anything about them unless they're asking how my treatment is going. And playing soccer with them is no problem. I played on a dodgeball team this spring and I definitely kept a keen eye on those flying balls, but never had any problems! Like someone else said, they make all kinds of cool mouthguards, too!

I'm in the UK, that sounds about right for clear fixed braces. I paid some up front and then the rest monthly by direct debit over a couple of years, most orthos seem to offer this option.
This is a big deal to you, cause the braces will be in your mouth, everyone else will be far too worried about their own hangs ups to take more than a passing interest. Surely the people on the stag nights will be far too busy with drunken antics to notice what's going on in your mouth???

Hey man I'm a 25 year old MALE as well and JUST got them 1 week ago on 10/1/2009.
I'm very active in keeping a healthy lifestyle. I love martial arts, and everyone knows martials arts and braces don't mix. I'll just have to wear full head gear if sparring and a mouth guard made for braces. As for work, none of my coworkers really care that I have them on either. Even though I have a lisp with this expander on, it's not that bad. I brushed off my first braces joke the other day, haha.
It was a hard decision but I had to get braces to fix my teeth since they made me self-conscious when I saw how bad they were in a picture 2 years ago.
I currently have full metal braces (only top teeth for now, in the next ortho visit I get my bottom ones put on), and I ALSO have to wear an expander which makes talking, eating, and doing everything pretty hard.
Anyways, so far it's not that bad though really. Nobody really cares since they know what braces are, and more and more people are doing it. It's temporary, and I think the plus is that it will make you look younger lol.

Hi Stokie,
I'm in the UK also.
I have ceramic braces on top and metal on the bottom and the cost of my treatment was £3,600. My orthodontist let me spread the payments over the 12 months of treatment. If you're saving up for other things as well maybe you could get a loan independently and spread it over a few years instead?
Please don't think braces have to stop you going out and doing the stuff you normally do. You might feel self conscious for a couple of weeks but you soon forget you're even wearing braces.
I'm off on my mate's hen weekend soon and it doesn't bother me at all that I'm still in my braces.
Just go for it- you'll be glad you did!
Kitty

Speaking as a woman, chicks find guys with braces a lot cuter than guys with crooked teeth.
Just do it, you won't regret it, and I have a hard time believing you can't take a bit of teasing from your friends.
Seriously, I just had a medical school lecture yesterday where the 60 something doctor had full metal braces, it's no big deal.
Here's a general rule of life: no one cares about how you look nearly as much as you do, so don't sweat it.

Don't know why you say no dating while your wearing braces. Do you really want to date the kind of girl that will go "eww not him he has braces!" I won't lie I know there are women out there that will be like that, but most of them are younger, immature, act like they are still in high school, etc. This is pure bro science here but there is probably a LOT more women out there that would say "eww not him his teeth are crooked!"
As far as I am concerned, braces might actually work in your favor in the dating game. A lot of women have their guard up when meeting new people, and often times caution is usually interpreted as disinterest, however a man with braces will instantly appear a lot more friendlier, less threatening, etc. Don't ask me why, its just the way our subconscious mind interpret first impressions. Couple that with some cool confidence that when your braces come off you will be even more stunningly handsome, you will probably find braces working more in your favor than not.
