Haha! It feels like it's cost that much!

No, seriously though, I got an AWESOME deal on my braces by going to a dental school for treatment.

Two advantages:
1) $3,300 as opposed to $5,500 (minimum) anywhere else.
2) All the newest (sometimes experimental) tools and methods are available to you, as opposed to what might be available at an established orthodontist's private practice.

I've really enjoyed having braces!

Hi River!

I really enjoyed reading your story, and you're a great writer. Thanks for being so candid and for putting yourself out there.

I too am a bonafide member of the Vampire Fang club. Maybe we should have t-shirts made!

CANCELLED!!!

#110 Post by shinyRiver »

My ortho appointment, which was supposed to be Tuesday, was cancelled because The Ohio State University declared a snow day.

If that weren't bad enough, we had to move our wedding up an entire month (from October 2 to September 4) because the maximum occupancy of the house we're getting married in is 50 people, and we're having far more than 50 people at the wedding and reception, so we needed to have at least the reception outdoors. The weather on September 4 is probably going to be a lot better than the weather on October 2. And my mouth is probably going to be exactly as metallic as it is today...

I hope I hope I hope that my braces are off by then... but if not, at least I can schedule a trash-the-dress photoshoot for sometime after the wedding when I FINALLY have my braces off. :)

Down here at Shawnee in Portsmouth, Ohio we even closed and they NEVER do that. My sister goes to school in Columbus and I was shocked when they closed.

Well, Im sure your ortho knows the importance of your big day, and maybe she will come around. Just hint alot and be very anal about your braces? I hope it works out for you! Your teeth look so nice! :]

Ken, I was thinking that, too- that maybe the extra month would make a difference, and that early October weather wouldn't be so bad. But this past year, I had an outdoor engagement party in early October and it was 40 degrees outside! And I figure there's nothing I can really do about my braces coming off before then. They either will or they won't...

I am changing orthodontists soon, because my current ortho is graduating and a different ortho at the college will be taking over my case. I hope that means that the ortho that gets assigned to me won't have too much invested in my case, and won't care if my smile isn't 100% perfect when they de-brace me.

I KNOW my smile is never going to be totally perfect. I had a 1st premolar (left) and and 2nd premolar (right) extracted on the bottom, and as a result my teeth will never look exactly symmetrical. And my midline will be a little off. But I can TOTALLY live with that. My teeth were so ugly before. It was hard to eat, let alone smile! I just want, for once in my life, to be able to smile freely, without my lips getting caught on teeth or brackets and wires!

I really enjoy following your story and felt bad for you about the canceled adjustment. Between snow and flat tires you have had some bad luck.

Your teeth have made amazing progress and look great. I can't believe you will still have your braces on for the wedding. We are in a similar boat, looks like my wedding photos will be taken with my braces shining brightly. I also had to move my wedding date. I have come to accept that fact and am just really excited about being married.

Look forward to your next progress report and hopefully you will have an early spring. (Grow our wedding bouquets.)

OMG

I was late for my appointment today. One week and 45 minutes late for my appointment. Because I had to go to class, then come home and shower, and because while I was in the shower I was trusting my fiance to keep an eye on the time, and, well, he did. He kept reminding me we had to leave by 12:30. I wasn't listening because I was running around getting ready, but in hindsight he was having a serious senior moment. It takes ONE HOUR and TEN MINUTES to get to my ortho from where we live, and my appointment was at 1 which means, you guessed it! We should have left at 11:30. So for about 45 minutes, I'm talking his head off as he's driving me to my appointment... when suddenly my phone starts buzzing and his finger shoots up to point to the clock on the dashboard. It made a little *whap* sound as it hit the glass face of the digital clock. *whap* 1:18. @#$%& !
The orthodontic office called me, sounding VERY annoyed.
"Where are you?!" They ask.
"What? I don't know!" I look around and everything looks exactly the same for about 100 miles along the highway... Did we miss an exit? Is this what it feels like to experience missing time? I know we left on time... Did the car stall? Is it still Tuesday?! What the hell is happening?
"Tell them we're about 20 minutes away." Fiance says, as I'm checking for microchip injection sites, traces of a nosebleed and other obvious evidence of alien abduction.
"We're about 20 minutes away." I repeat without thinking. I have to tell the receptionist SOMETHING!
"Okay, I don't know if Dr. _____ can wait that long, it's already almost 20 after. But I'll page him. Just keep coming, and if he can't see you, I will call you back to cancel and we can reschedule." The receptionist says.
I hang up and Fiance explains that he simply messed up the time, and that he was thinking the appointment was at 2 even though he knew it was at 1. (In his defense, my appointments are usually later in the evening!) But still, what a nonsense reason to be late! I was very upset, but ortho was still able to see me (THANK GOD!) and Fiance took me out to dinner afterward to make up for being temporarily insane. So all was well.

What is even MORE miraculous than still getting to see my ortho even though I was obscenely, horribly late?

I AM GETTING MY BRACES OFF IN TIME FOR MY WEDDING!

It's official- no matter what, I will have my braces off in time for my wedding. Even if I need to get de-braced, temporary-retainered, and re-braced (a roughly 500-dollar ordeal) I will look like myself in my wedding pictures! But my ortho has made me feel pretty confident that I will get my braces off for good before my wedding.

And Lewick- I am VERY pleased with my progress, especially since my original prognosis was two and a half to three years! My ortho commented on how fast my teeth have been moving, and how he was so amazed at the biological variation between patients. That made me feel even MORE confident about my treatment being complete by the time the big day rolls around! Yay!

I am so happy I can hardly stand it!

danni, I've been following your story, and I LOVE your profile picture. I realize you have a lot of time left in your treatment, but have you considered other photo options, (that is, other than retouching), like saving your dress for a "trash-the-dress" photo shoot with just you and your husband after you get de-braced? I read about people doing that, just to flesh out their wedding album with some more interesting and brace-free pictures. I know it would be a long time to wait for those perfect, romantic wedding photos, but I'm still planning on doing that kind of photo shoot, just because it's so romantic- it's like reliving the day all over again!

How wonderful!- Thinking you were going to be late and maybe not even get in to see the ortho and then find out your beautiful smile will be ready for your wedding. I almost cried, I feel so good for you. Send me your lucky charm. Your teeth have moved really fast and what an amazing difference.

I want your kind of adjustment.

I have thought about having photos after the wedding but we are probably talking 6-7 months- Wonder if I will still fit in the dress.

Congrats on the news and look forward to new photos.

Hi SR- Isn't this your second time with elastics? I have a triangle config which is the inverted version of yours. I get headaches from the pressure and they are generally a pain in the a** as I think you will agree.

I was shopping the other day and the clerk was an older woman who noticed my elastics and commented when she was a young girl she had braces and had to wear elastics. I felt like I was definitely old school and didn't necessarily like the vibe. Just think of all the invisilgn people who are missing our experience. I feel so bad for them. ( I wonder if we are the last generation to adorn our looks with metal clunkers?)

Keep us posted on your progress.
