Taking the plunge

Well I have decided to take the plunge. I am a 32 year old male getting braces for the first time. I had two teeth extracted on the bottom a few days ago and had spacers put in. I don't actually get my braces until next week, the 27th to be exact. I don't really feel like there is any turning back at this point but I am nervous, terrified, excited, anxious, and self concious all at the same time. These spacers are killing me and they have only been in since Saturday. I hope that this is not an indication of how the next two years will be! I am also terrified of not having any support in this so I am glad I found this website. I hope the next two years go by fast and I will post again next week after I actually get my braces on.

Hi Capsfan!

First of all, congrats on taking the plunge! I recall all the feelings you mentioned when I got braced almost a year ago. I haven't had spacers, but from what I've read most people find them more painful than the braces themselves. Good luck on your journey!

Good luck in your new journey! You won't regret making this decision.
Spacers...I had 8 of them. My teeth were sore for about a week, then it was OK. Don't be scared, you will not have this pain for 2 years. You will feel this kind of soreness for about a week, after you get your braces for the first time and usually after adjustments (when they change your wires).

Thanks to all of you. It's nice to know there are other people going through, or have been through, the same feelings and emotions I am having. I have hated my smile for so long and I am sure it will be worth it in the end. I am also sure I will be back here to complain or discuss my experiences down the road. I will try and post photos after my brace day. I want to keep a photo journal anyway. I think that will provide me the motivation of where I have been to where I will be when I am done.

Hi Capsfan!

It's awesome that you are getting braced. I'm only a few days in myself and I'm very glad I did it. I think the end results are going to be fabulous! I know it's hard as an adult and I'm a rather young looking adult so I look even younger now. It's a good thing though! I was also just thinking about all of my high school crushes and they all had braces so I know that I found a lot of braced people attractive too!

Hey Capsfan

Congrats for joining the club...

I'm right in there with ya...except for the spacers - don't need 'em because my ortho says he doesn't use molar bands on adults. I hope the brackets stay on 'cause I had trouble with them when I was braced the first time...Yea, this will be my second time getting braces

I'm just a few days ahead of you with our brace days. You know something? Even as a second timer, I'm still feeling (& can relate to) all to excitement and nervousness that you're going through right now. I guess that's part of the fun

It will take us a week or two to get used to the feeling of the hardware, as well as the everyday social impact. I run a business and deal with the public every day. Naturally I'm expecting to feel a little self-conscious when I first get my braces. That goes away, being replaced by the feeling of confidence as our new smiles take shape.

I have to agree that this is an awesome site. Visiting here really helped educate me and influence my decision to finally go through with it.

Welcome, capsfan!

I am 31, and have been wearing braces for a whopping 8 days!! I can completely understand the feelings you mention, and believe me -- you are not alone! This board is full of supportive people going through the same experience! Personally, I had worried like crazy prior to brace day, and found that it's not as bad as I had imagined! In the past 8 days, I have found wax, soft foods and pain relievers to be my friends. I wish you lots of luck on your upcoming adventure, and look forward to seeing your progress!
