cmone's tooth tale
Hi, I'm a 34 yr old private duty nurse & I have become addicted to this site in no time. When googling "braces", the site kept coming up so I decided what the hay. I'm very glad I did. This site is very informative and some of the journeys are down right Hi-la-ri-ous! javascript:emoticon('')I love it. You guys have made me finally decide to take the plunge. Have my 1st consult 12/22/09...Have four consults lined up through Feb and hopefully by then I'll be ready to proceed. I used to have really straight teeth but just like everything else on my body, LOL, my teeth have started shifting. I could feel my bite start to change about a year ago & now I have this thing where a couple of teeth are sticking out and a couple are under. I decided that I'm always taking care of other people, I'm going to take care of me. I know the road ahead of me is gonna be tough especially going to school & working full time (not a lot of xtra time to lie in bed & cry) but I am so ready. Not so excited about $$ but so stoked about my new smile. Thanks.

I love that! Welcome, I'm new here too. Everyone has been really great so far, and it's nice to have support from others who are going through the same thing. Keep us updated!cmone wrote:I decided that I'm always taking care of other people, I'm going to take care of me.
2 more days until my first consult and I am readyyyy! Also ready for a career change. (today is an official b*$@^ day for me!) sick of nursing, so sick of nursing...I want to wear real clothes to work and not be stressed out & have to work holidays, weekends, nights, etc etc etc. I want a normal life with normal work hours! OK I'm finished. Just enrolled at the community college in the computer information technology program. That's a change! Wish me luck!

1st Consult
Had my 1st consult on Tuesday. The office, ortho and the assistant I met were all very nice. It seems my teeth are a lot more jacked up than I thought. He quoted me a treatment price of $56-5700 and a 24 month sentence. I was hoping for $5000 and a shorter sentence but I guess that wishful thinking on my part. 1 down & 3 more to go, 2 next month & my last one the middle of February & hopefully I'll be braced by spring break so I'll have a couple of free days to recuperate from the pain. Hope you all had a wonderful holiday and have a happy new year. It's a new year and that means new possibilities!
Technological genius
OK, my new major is information technology. Why did I have to try about 20 times to post this avatar?! Went to see Avatar in 3D last night, it was great. Two thumbs up.

Had my 2nd consult today. I think this ortho is the one. Really well lit, clean office, very tech savvy. Staff very nice and encouraging. Ortho explained treatment plan in detail & the price was a little better. $5450 for 24 mths with extensive elastic use for crossbite. He offers a standard adult fee with no extra charge for ceramic on upper/ metal lower. I was really impressed & the patients were all adults. Have 2 more consults to go but I think I'm just going to the one scheduled next week & then make my decision. Ready to get the ball rolling! I promise I'm gonna get pics up tomorrow when I get home from work. & school's back in, time to get my brain back in working condition from all of the holiday partying. Happy new year.

I can't believe I said my teeth weren't that bad. Wow. Frontal view isn't too bad but the side views are jacked up! We didn't go to the dentist growing up, if u got a cavity, u got it pulled. & I had my wisdom teeth pulled because they were so big, there was no space. Well I'm hoping they can do something about my remaining teeth. Hope u can see the pics.

First day of new semester today! Survey of Math & World Religion. Quite exciting huh? 3rd consult today. Price keeps getting lower & lower...$5200 but he wants a tooth extracted. I'm already down 7 w/ wisdom teeth included. I don't think so. I knew right away he wasn't the one when he walked in @ 3:30p & said good morning & didn't correct himself. So now I have to go the 4th consult to see if he suggests tooth extraction. I immediately called ortho #2 to see if he could fix my protruding teeth like he said without pulling a tooth & his assistant said they'd call me 1st thing in the am. I'm already treating him like I'm paying him...next consult isn't until next month & I'm getting really antsy. Why did this guy have to suggest pulling a tooth?! Til next time

Hi cmone
That's pretty funny about the ortho saying good morning in mid afternoon!!!
He probably mixes his patients up too!!!
So it sounds like you're being thorough w/ your consults. That's always a good thing, for a consensus as well as financial perspective. I didn't do that this time (I'm about to get braces for the 2nd time) 'cause my bite issues are a whole lot simpler this time. I'll only be in braces for about a year. The 1st time I had ortho treatment though, I had 5-6 consults but it's good to be sure. My wife had her braces a couple of years ago (in retainers now) & tried to avoid extractions during treatment. It was impossible, really. Our ortho ended up ordering 2 teeth extracted (in mid treatment) because there just wasn't room, but she didn't want to give them up!
Good luck with your decision making, and staying patient! I'll be back to visit.....

Hi mikesmile, that's exactly what I was thinking...this guy can't even keep up with the time of day & he kept saying the the same thing over & over but in a different way (maybe I had a blank look on my face from the moment he greeted me) I don't know but I wasn't so sure I wanted my teeth to be left in his hands. Good luck to you on your second journey (I'm jealous because your sentence is so short you lucky devil you!)
As far as extraction goes, ortho #2's assistant called me this morning & said he didn't think I needed to have one pulled but he wouldn't make his decision until after my records appointment. I was impressed that they returned my call as promised. I deal with doctors' offices all
the time @ work and you have to harass some of them for a return call. & he hasn't received a dime from me yet. Yep, I like him. So I went ahead & scheduled the appt for Jan 28th & 2 weeks later he'll give me with a case presentation. I'm still gonna check out ortho #4 just to see what he recommends... Wish my tooth luck please, it does not want to be pulled.
I'm hoping to be braced the beginning of March & then me & my partner will be off to a nice vacation over spring break. I'm looking forward to some warm weather. It's been freezing in North Carolina the past couple of weeks. Til next time folks....

Had my records visit today. Not bad....putting my teeth into all of that stuff was... interesting, had grape flavor & it didn't taste as bad as I thought. It was just weird. The assistant that's been working with me is just too sweet. Her name is Christian & she rocks. Hope I'm never in pain & let my routine $#*+ or FFS come out of my mouth because I know she'll be offended. Treatment plan in 2 weeks, get my teeth cleaned @ my dentist & then I'm off. I'll be so glad to get it done already because i'm so sick of scouring the web for braces info. My partner says I'm obsessed but I tell her I just want to be well informed. I'm almost there!

Hi cheyeaitsxchelsea, no choice?! My ortho had at least 5...watermelon, apple, strawberry... U know, all of the Now & Later flavors (I used to love that candy, none of that while braced ). My treatment consult is on the 11th so it looks like we'll be getting the railroad tracks around the same time. I'm getting the clear/metal combo also. We can share our misery/major joy as our teeth take this journey!
