biting brackets?
I got my lower braces on about a week ago, after having the top ones two months. I still can't close my teeth without biting a couple of the lower brackets. I had two of the brackets repositioned (after biting one off) and 'pillows' put on top of them, but it didn't seem to help much. Has anyone else experienced this? How long did it take for things to straighten out? This is driving me nuts!
Hi Heather,
I just had my brackets put on today (lower only). I had braces when I was a teen...Loved it so much I decided to do it again (sense the sarcasm there). I am also biting one of them. The Ortho bypassed it, meaning it has no wire attached. That way, if I bite it and it pops off, I won't have to contend with cutting the wire and such until I can get in to have them replace it. I'm timid about it at this point, not daring to really chew anything. I'll see if I can get by until my next appointment and have them deal with it then.

hi! i had this issue! my orthodontist put in HUGE bite blocks on my back upper molars, this was like almost a bunch of cement stuff that made me have a huge open bite for awhile. Bite blocks helped alot though, it did suck to eat because with the bite blocks on the back two teeth were the only teeth hiting (kind of propped up my whole upper mouth so only the back were hitting on the bite blocks.)
I tried to find information on this on the web but only found this definition for you:
a commercially available device, usually made of rubber, which can be used to prop open a patient's oral cavity during a prolonged treatment session.
Mine werent rubber though they were cemented to my teeth.
I had the same issue, having to almost move my mouth in weird ways to eat. I went back to the orthodontist after about a week and had the ortho look at it and said was glad i had come in. They sucked but did help! They took about 2 to 3 weeks to get used to. Because mine were cement as I started eating it slowly grinded down the amount of the bite block till they were almost gone, after about 4 months of them being there they were almost gone, they just sanded the rest of them off recently. hope this helped! I will try to get a picture of the bite blocks on my story soon for you!

Thanks Whiskers! I wondered about the bite blocks, but thought maybe that might be worse. I really just want to eat normally again. Hopefully my teeth will get moving and I'll stop biting them so much. I don't go for another adjustment for 6 weeks yet. I'm hoping then she will reposition a few brackets then.

To be honest with you, the bite blocks were awful for about a week, they did get better, and they were AWESOME after that, they helped so much, but eating was still hard..but in a different way..I learned how to eat with them quickly , and eating was actually better with the bite blocks than without! They helped a lot, but if you get um be prepared for an adjustment to how you eat! I did like having them at the time better than having to move my jaw to eat without biting off a brackets hehe . let us know what happens!
