Hey chelsea!

If your ortho requested your insurance company's approval for four years of treatment, that does not necessarily mean you will be a metal mouth for four years. First, there are your records and any pre-brace hardware you might require- for example I had I guess what they call upper AND lower lingual holding arches installed 1 month prior to actually being bracketed. Not to mention all of the stuff included in your treatment that happens AFTER your braces come off, like you might get hawleys and then get essix retainers a few months later after your bite has adjusted to its permanent location... and then the subsequent check-ups to make sure your retainers are working. Which I do believe are usually included in the total cost of treatment and therefore would be included in the total estimated length of treatment.

So don't get ahead of yourself! Your ortho can give you a better estimate of how long you'll need to be a brace face when you go in to get bracketed. (However, my ortho thought I'd be in braces for 2.5 - 3 years, and so far it looks like he was about 6 months to a year off, and that I'll be getting them off much sooner!) So don't get too worried. There's much more to be excited about than to be worried about! I'm so excited for you!

Thank you ShinyRiver! I should have thought about all of that before I jumped the long cliff known as conclusions. I love your progress and your story is sooo inspiring. Not to mention I know exactly the place you go to!

So I havent posted since well..the morning of my appointment. And let me tell you is that one hell of a story.

Okay Sunday night I was a wreck. My boyfriend broke up with me, well thats what I assumed simply because...he was a jackass. So being me and I sorta went loopy. You know the smoke like a choo choo train, drink till you pass out, and punch innocent doors. None of these solve the problem, so dont do it!

So anyway, Monday morning at like 6am I called him and he acted like nothing happened at all! Like I was all like I know were not together but I would really like to talk about last night, and hes like wait what? Were not together? Since then its been ups and downs, the downs being not having time to talk much since Im a busy college kid. Its like hes available and im not and vice versa.

Its 7am and my appointment was at like 11:30 so since I had been awake all night I decided to sleep for an hour. I got up got ready and see my parents hire a cab to take me to my appointments well they told me to be ready between 10am 10:45am and I was well 11:00 rolls around and im pissed! I call them and theyre like whats your name etc abd they said we just found out your driver is sick and im like wtf! thanks for letting me know. Im like i have an appointment in 30 minutes and it takes atleast 45 to get there. So they were all like were going to find someone as soon as possible. I called my ortho and said Id be like 20 minutes late and they said Im sorry were going to have to cancel your appointment then. They said I could come in that Tuesday (23rd) at 8 and I said okay. I called the cab company and was like I have to cancel my transportation because yall didnt show up etc and the guy was like im sorry. Urrfff! So I tried to schdule a ride for Tuesday and theyre like we cant do that in such short notice, Im like really? REALLY! You never called to let me know my driver was never going to show. I get charged for dropping appointments without prior notice, not to mention my parents are paying big bucks for yall to take me. And he said Im sorry. So that day I made sure I got my money back. So I had to call my ortho and cancel that one. So now its for March 5th. The first day of my Spring Break.

Oooo this consult better bring good news. Or atleast so spacers/brace action.

P.S. Im worried about what the man friend might think of my whole braceface. :/

Chelsea, if your man friend is worth keeping around at all, he'll tell you how much he adores your new bling, and he'll giggle and kiss you anyway when you're out to eat and you get lettuce caught in your grill. Just sayin'.

So sorry about your appointment, but as you probably already know, I've totally been there. Canceling appointments really sucks. But hang in there, just 3 more days!!! I can't wait for your next update!

Im sorta excited and sorta nervous. This appointment is basically to tell me my treatment plan. Im just hoping its all good news regarding my impacted canine, and the duration of treatment. Not to mention my wisdom teeth. Im trying to keep them, just because I really dont feel like getting them out but hey whatever.

As for the man friend issue, he will be the death of me. I swear. XD

Sorry River! Im here now, its been on hell of a Friday. Im still recovering this morning.

So I went in, and I was waiting there forever! It was killing me. I was thinking I would like sit in the huge chair and stuff, but no. We went into his office and on this big computer screen was my mouth on display. Eeeek. It really does look worse with your mouth spread eagle.

He had this summary of the treatment and was reading off of it. This is what it says:

Bite
-Class I on the left side
-Class III on the right
-Overjet is normal but retruded
-Anterior Crossbite Yes Lingual #8
-Overbite is normal
-Dental midline is off and he wrote something about uppertotone or something but he said my midline is pretty good except that one tooth is like out of wack.
-Posterior Crossbite Yes Buccal #21

What he said to me: My molar relationship is in pretty good shape. He liked the way they were and he wants to keep them the way they are.

Alignment/Tooth Position
-Crowded Mild upper and lower
-Tipped Multiple teeth
-Impacted canine #11
-Rotated Multiple teeth
-Discoloration from Cacification Upper Anteriors
-Cavity #12

What he said: He asked me to get the cavity filled ASAP.

Skeletal Analysis
-Front to Back Class III Mild
-Upper Jaw is normal
-Lower Jaw is protruded
-Upper Dental Arch is slightly retruded
-Lower Dental Arch is normal
-Up and down deepbite
-Upper Arch is narrow
-Lower Arch is narrow

Soft Tissue
-lack of attatched gingival on lower anterior
-Nose is on
-Chin is on
-Short lingual fernum

What he said: They said they found my tongue to be really really short, and if I wanted I could get that little thing clipped. Pfft no way. I think my tongue has worked well in many situations. Just saying.

Okay so thats the majority of the consult. Ill post the treatment plan in a second. Got loads to type, I think.

:D It's all good, Chelsea! I'm glad you finally got there! Your consultation sounds like it went really well! That's really good that your molars are where they should be. Sorry about that cavity, though. I hope you can get that taken care of quickly so you can get your treatment started soon. :) Any word on your estimated treatment time?

Eeek I havent got the motivation to type a lot but ill get to the point.

Okay so, Im getting my cavity filled ermm on the 9th, and then I believe the 28th, I get my spacers, and on the 30th of March I get my braces on! And then...very soon after that I get my eruption surgery and also the discussion of my wisdoms being removed.

Treatment is estimated for 24 months but he said if my canine comes down quickly and correctly (which is likely due to the postion) im looking at 18-21 months. The braces themself are not Damons, not sure what they are.

Uhmm what else. Oh retainers. He doesnt use hawleys or whatever. On my top teeth I get a full mold clear retainer. Looks like invisalign. Then on the bottom theyre like bonding a little metal rod looking thing thats good for 20 years.

Sooo thats it! Ill be braced by the end of this month. Consult for the exposure is 3 days after my 19th birthday :/

Lets hope I get 18 months.

Hey Chelsea, sorry about the cavity. It won't be long now huh?! It would be nice if we could be this optimistic throughout the entire journey but for some reason, I don't think that's going to be the case. Anywho, glad you made your appt & got the ball is rolling.

I wont be optimistic. At all. Im so tired of all these mouth related appointments, not to mention all the health problems I ALREADY have.

Woke up at 5am. Lovely, yeah? The best part is, is that I didnt fall asleep till 3am. Its a 2 hour drive back to college town where my current dentist is. Im on my spring break. So I get there bright and early, and the dentist, who Ive obviously met before, he was really nice today. Not that he wasnt nice the first time I met him, but my first time wasnt so pleasant. The tech the first time was a you know what. Im not sure if I got her again, but if I did the tech today was in an okay mood.

Heres the fun part. My ortho 3 days ago only seen one cavity, and then one that is being looked at carefully but didnt need filled if I brushed really well. The dentist only seen one way back in Nov. The same cavity the ortho mentioned during my consult. Well I get in there, hes checking out my teeth and hes like oh, theres another one on the same side as the one were for sure filling, ill go ahead and do that one today. So he does his needle work and im numb, and I didnt really get scared as much as I used to. In fact it was an okay expierence. But then, after all is said and done, hes like okay were going to schdule you for some more fillings on the other side. Im like what the hell! Where the eff did these come from. But I kept my mouth shut. Ugh. Seriously its not worth running my mouth anymore. Ive learned that in my current relationship. So on the 25th of march two days before spacers pretty much ill go back for some more fillings, then get spacers, then be braced. And not even a month later get freaking exposure surgery. Kill me now.

Oh and my relationship, is in the drain right now. I havent got to tell him about my braces yet. Were so busy now. I hate it. We barely talk. Im a wreck. Metal on my teeth are really going to make me feel so attractive. :l

Thank you. I mean, I get asked out quite frequently, and ofcourse the boyfriend has no idea about this, but I turn them down. So I can only imagine what it will be like flashing pearly whites all straight, anddd we cant forget flashing a mouth full of braces!

Can anyone take a look at my xray picture [on page 1] and tell me if my canine is in a good position? Like Im pretty sure its not in the palate because I remember my ortho feeling my gum right above the gap and was like there it is, but I mean if its in such good position like he says why cant it come down when enough room is made? I remember him saying I might not need exposure surgery, but at my consult I need it now.

Im hoping it magically rears its head in the first month i have braces before the exposure surgery. I REALLY REALLY dont want a hunk of gum missing. Ive seen pictures...its freaking me out.

Chelsea:

Whatever happens, whatever you have to go through, you getting your teeth fixed will be WORTH it. It will change your life. And if your boyfriend is anything but 100% supportive, he's NOT worth being with...

And if you ask me, getting braces makes you 100% more attractive, instantaneously. Before braces, I was just a girl with terrible teeth. After getting bracketed, my smile made sense. They were like a guarantee that my teeth would be beautiful someday. Everybody who sees you is so curious as to what you will look like without braces. A shiny grill gives a girl this air of mystery like "This girl is THIS hot WITH braces?! She must look like a MODEL or something with her braces OFF!"

So don't worry about what ANYBODY thinks- from what I've seen, you're beautiful and you are going to be even MORE beautiful with braces, and MORE beautiful YET with straight, perfect teeth! :)

Chin-up, Chelsea! That canine's gonna come down one way or another! However it gets where it's supposed to be, it's gonna be gorgeous!
