life before surgery life after surgery
how has this surgery helped with your personality. has it made you more bearable to live with?
The idea that surgery would "help" your "personality" is ludicrous. My "condition" formed who I am today and I am terribly pleased with how I turned out. If anything, my surgery has made me more unhappy and a great deal LESS bearable to live with. Keep in mind that my experience is NOT the norm, however.
contender. so what you are saying is that is has changed your personality but in a negative way...contender wrote:The idea that surgery would "help" your "personality" is ludicrous. WHAT?! I kind of think this thread is ludicrous too! If you're implying that people with jaw problems have horrible personalities before surgery, I do not agree. If you do, surgery isn't going to "change" your personality. Being grumpy b/c you're in pain from TMJ is not part of your personality.
I am seeing a pattern lately where some people on this board think jaw surgery is going to change their life in drastic ways whether it be looks or personality. If you're doing this surgery for those reasons, boy you're going to be even more miserable post-op.
Your personality is something that is formed for many, many years with the help of family, friends, teachers, strangers, society, etc.
Personally, I was happy before surgery, and I am happy now. Am I happier now? Maybe, but that has a lot to do with OTHER things that have happened in my life.

HokieTay is right, anyone expecting their cinderella style transformation of their life is due to be hugely disappointed. If you're insecure before surgery you'll be insecure after surgery, and it's extremely foolish to expect it to make any difference to what you're like to live with.
Biggs, sorry if this is not what you want to hear, but if it's a change in personality you're after you need a psychiatrist not a surgeon...

My personailty is perfectly fine thankyou very much.
You obviously have no idea about TMJ pain otherwise you would know it is does play with your mood at its worst point. Especailly if youve been suffering from TMJ for long time.
as for my personal experiance ive been fortunate enough to have family and friends who are learned enough to understand how bad TMJ pain is, and they recognise the fact that it does put limitations on day to day life of the tmd sufferer.
i think you and the above above postee are ignorant and subeducated on TMJ disese. I honestly suggest you educate your self about TMD to prevent you making absurd comments such as above. Better still dont post if you have nothing constructive to say!!!!

LOL LOL.
descantus have you been to see a phychiatrist??? i guess you have because your insecurity seems to have gone.
look what ive found under your blogg. for any one who want to read it full the click the tab under DESCANTUS's post
2 months have now passed, and i've spent the last week in a flurry of job interviews! It speaks volumes about my confidence levels that i'm now tying my hair right back and flashing big smiles when meeting potential employers. Before surgery I always wore my hair forward to conceal my jawline and could barely look them in the eye as I wondered if they were noticing my underbite and lisp. How nice it is to finally be free of those demons![/b]
and what were you saying about insecurity insecure people?
Blimey, what nasty aggressive posts!
Thanks for quoting my blog, I was talking about confidence but you seem to be mixing it up with personality which are two different things entirely. I also know plenty about TMD and that has nothing to do with personality either - someone who's nasty and aggressive beforehand won't suddenly turn in to snow white after surgery, they'll simply transfer the reason for their bad behaviour onto something else. My response was perfectly constructive to anyone thinking surgery would deal with their temper issues.
So who are you to dish out insults after putting out a question on a public board, just because you don't like the replies?

I know TMJ all too well. I am a happy person and deal with my pain the best I can. I am starting a wall street job in investment banking this month and I went though interviews with TMJ pain. I think it is ignorant to say that TMJ does not affect one's personality. Pain affects how we act. The main reason I am going to get surgery is to fix my bite which causes an imbalance in my joints. By fixing my bite, I believe my joints will settle down and cause me less pain. Less pain in my life will make me much happier. The perception others have of me will be better because they won't witness any mood differences because I won't have as much pain. There is nothing wrong with hoping surgery helps with pain and helps with emotional stress that comes with pain.

insults! what insults???
This has all originated from the question "how has surgery changed youre personality". I thought it would be intresting to know how it has helped enhance peoples personality through there new found confidence!
It was a very straight forward question.
look descantus you stated in your post:
"If you're insecure before surgery you'll be insecure after surgery, and it's extremely foolish to expect it to make any difference to what you're like to live with."
insecure is what your were before surgery.
You said your self in youre blog you used to use your hair to take the focus away from youre face. You used to hide behind your hair. In my oxfords the INSECURE means LACKING SELF ESTEEM. What you had!!!
So the nerve to say surgery wont make changes to your insecurity/ self esteem which also shapes your personalisty is absurd!
And as for the BAD TEMPER! i dont know where youve plucked that out from because i certaintly didnt mention anything about that in the post.
how did you assume "More bearable to live with" meant anything to do with bad temper!
TMD brings on headaches which turn into migraines that make you lethargic there fore limiteding you from certain thing.
This behaviour in return for example could become unbearable for a spouse if it affects the realtionship!
Educate yourself descantus and aviod posting such nasty vindictive posts!!!
